This study was carried out in the greenhouse of the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD), in the municipality of Dourados, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, from April to May of 2015. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of different concentrations of abscisic acid (ABA) on the responses under water stress and recovery of Hymenaea courbaril L. seedlings after reirrigation. The following six treatments were assessed: 1) Irrigation with no ABA; 2) Irrigation + 10 µM ABA; 3) Irrigation + 100 µM ABA; 4) No irrigation nor ABA; 5) No irrigation + 10 µM ABA; and 6) No irrigation + 100 µM ABA. No irrigation treatment consisted on water suspension until the photosynthetic rate was close to zero. The plants were then irrigated daily to maintain 70% of the water holding capacity of the soil for a 12-days recovery period. ABA doses applied exogenously during the no irrigation period neither prevented the reduction of photosynthetic activity nor optimized the recovery of gas exchanges and carboxylation efficiency of Rubisco after water and seedling quality restoration. The concentration of 100 µM ABA promoted the degradation of chlorophylls independently of irrigation, which shows that high concentrations of ABA may cause a residual effect on this species. The seedlings exhibited normal metabolic recovery after about 12 days of reirrigation of the soil due to the characteristics of the species and not the tested treatments

The restoration of altered and degraded ecosystems will only be successful if research studies generate biological, ecological and physiological knowledge about the species of different Brazilian ecosystems. In order to produce quality seedlings, ecophysiological knowledge of the initial phase of the species is essential, since artificial shading can interfere with the growth rate and quality of the seedling. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of different levels of shading on the emergence, initial growth and photosynthetic metabolism of Ormosia arborea. The experiment was carried out with 30% and 70% shade and in full sun. At 60 days after sowing, non-destructive (gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence) and destructive (growth measures) analyzes were performed. 70% shade provides greater emergence, initial growth, gas exchange and photosynthetic efficiency of PS II. Cultivation at 0% shade (full sun) is not suitable for this species

In this research, we hypothesized that Ormosia arborea (Vell.) Harms seedlings should grow better and achieve greater levels of gas exchange when grown in soils with higher water availability. Thus, this study was developed to assess the metabolic responses of the seedlings to different levels water availability. Irrigation was performed on alternate days, at water holding capacities (WHC) of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The metabolic responses were analyzed at 15, 50, 85, and 120 days after starting treatments. The O. arborea plants grown in conditions of higher water availability (75% and 100% WHC) had higher leaf water potential and chlorophyll content, in addition to higher values for chlorophyll a fluorescence and gas exchange, than those grown in other conditions.  Water deficit caused by low levels of water availability (25% or 50% WHC) reduces leaf water potential, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and gas exchange. As a strategy to tolerate stress, seedlings tend to invest in their antioxidant system, as shown by the high levels of activity of the enzymes Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Peroxidase (POD), and Catalase (CAT). Although the seedlings may be tolerant to cultivation under 50% WHC, the best functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus occurred under WHC of 75%.Nesta pesquisa, hipotetizamos que as mudas de Ormosia arborea (Vell.)

Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of oral health literacy (OHL) on conceptions of care and behaviors related to COVID-19. The sample came from two preliminary cross-sectional studies that determined the level of OHL of parents/guardians of six-to-12-year-old children in two major Brazilian cities (Curitiba and Belo Horizonte). Functional OHL was measured using the Brazilian version of the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry (BREALD-30) and the Health Literacy Dental Scale (HeLD-14) for the evaluation of interactive OHL. Participants were recruited through e-mail, social media, and telephone contact. The questionnaire on conceptions of care and behaviors related to COVID-19 was created based on the guidelines of the World Health Organization. Two hundred nineteen individuals participated in the study. There was no significant difference in socioeconomic and demographic variables and in the medians of BREALD and HeLD-14 between the two cities (P>0.05). Higher levels of functional OHL were associated with an appropriate conception that individual care affects collective care (P=0.038), but with an inappropriate conception of seeking medical assistance in cases of mild symptoms (P=0.030). Higher levels of interactive OHL were related to social distancing behavior in the city of Curitiba (P=0.049) and in the overall sample (P=0.040). It is concluded that functional OHL was associated with two of the investigated conceptions about COVID-19, while interactive OHL was associated with social distancing behavior. These data may suggest that different dimensions of the OHL can have an impact on different aspects of coping with the pandemic

Dentists are responsible for drug prescribing, hence the importance of studies that aim to evaluate patients’ knowledge regarding their treatment. Another matter of concern in dentistry is the practice of self-medication. OBJECTIVES: To assess and describe the degree of patients’ knowledge regarding their prescribed medicine in emergency dental services located in Porto Alegre, Brazil; verify the occurence of verbal prescribing practice by dentists; assess prevalence of self-medication. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in two emergency services, whose data were collected using a structured questionnaire after dental consultation. In order to evaluate the degree of patient’s knowlegde, a scoring system was used, which each variable was graded. The sum of the points produced three different levels: good, regular and insufficient. Regarding self-medication, the aim was to establish its prevalence and identify the most utilized medications before seeking the dentist. RESULTS: Of the 286 outpatients interviewed, 164 (57%) were female, with a 35 year-old average and family mean income of 3.5 minimal salaries. Around 10% of the patients received verbal prescription and of the 258 who were questioned concerning medication knowledge from written prescriptions, 86% identified correctly the drug’s name, 85% could tell the dose schedule, 66% knew the indication and 65% the correct dosage. Only 20% and 9% were able to inform aspects of precautions and adverse reactions, respectively. From scoring system results, 55% of the patients displayed a regular knowledge, 34% insufficient and 11% a good one. The prevalence of self-medication among patients was 70%, being analgesics (52%), nonsteroidal antiinflammatories (14%), muscle relaxants (11%) and antibiotics (9%) the most utilized groups. There was no association between self-medication and independent variables. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of the patients showed a sufficient knowledge level concerning the primary aspects of drug treatment, however a better communication between dentists and pacients is required in order to promote rational drug use. The high prevalence of self-medication and its lack of association with socio-demographic variables might be related to the reason people usually seek the emergency department, that is dental pain, which requires immediate care and may be, on a first attempt, solved with OTC drugs. However, there was an expressive share of medication mistankely used for dental purposes

This study sought to establish the degree of patients’ knowledge regarding medication prescribed by public dental services in Porto Alegre and verify the frequency of verbal prescription by dentists and individual sources of information on medication. It involved a cross-sectional study conducted in two emergency services using a structured questionnaire applied after dental consultation. Of the 286 respondents, 164 (57%) were female, with an average age of 35 and mean family income of 3.5 minimum salaries. It was revealed that 10% of the patients received a verbal prescription and, of the 258 who were questioned regarding knowledge of medication from written prescriptions, 86% knew the name of the medication, 85% knew the dosage frequency, 66% knew the therapeutic indication and 65% the correct dosage. Only 20% and 9%, respectively, were aware of contra-indications and side effects. Based on the scoring system used, 55% of the patients displayed fair knowledge, 34% insufficient awareness and 11% good knowledge of the treatment. The main source of information about medication was the leaflet (40.7%). Most patients revealed a satisfactory level of knowledge about the core information regarding the treatment, but would have difficulty deciding precisely what to do in the event of complications.
