Overview of the design of the ITER heating neutral beam injectors
The heating neutral beam injectors (HNBs) of ITER are designed to deliver 16.7MWof 1 MeVD0 or
0.87 MeVH0 to the ITER plasma for up to 3600 s. They will be the most powerful neutral beam(NB)
injectors ever, delivering higher energy NBs to the plasma in a tokamak for longer than any previous
systems have done. The design of the HNBs is based on the acceleration and neutralisation of negative
ions as the efficiency of conversion of accelerated positive ions is so low at the required energy that a
realistic design is not possible, whereas the neutralisation ofH 12 andD 12 remains acceptable ( 4856%).
The design of a long pulse negative ion based injector is inherently more complicated than that of
short pulse positive ion based injectors because:
• negative ions are harder to create so that they can be extracted and accelerated from the ion source;
• electrons can be co-extracted from the ion source along with the negative ions, and their
acceleration must be minimised to maintain an acceptable overall accelerator efficiency;
• negative ions are easily lost by collisions with the background gas in the accelerator;
• electrons created in the extractor and accelerator can impinge on the extraction and acceleration
grids, leading to high power loads on the grids;
• positive ions are created in the accelerator by ionisation of the background gas by the accelerated
negative ions and the positive ions are back-accelerated into the ion source creating a massive power
load to the ion source;
• electrons that are co-accelerated with the negative ions can exit the accelerator and deposit power on
various downstream beamline components.
The design of the ITER HNBs is further complicated because ITER is a nuclear installation which
will generate very large fluxes of neutrons and gamma rays. Consequently all the injector components
have to survive in that harsh environment. Additionally the beamline components and theNBcell,
where the beams are housed, will be activated and all maintenance will have to be performed remotely.
This paper describes the design of theHNBinjectors, but not the associated power supplies, cooling
system, cryogenic system etc, or the high voltage bushingwhich separates the vacuum of the beamline
fromthehighpressureSF6 of the high voltage (1MV) transmission line, through which the power, gas and
coolingwater are supplied to the beam source. Also themagnetic field reduction system is not described
The emergence of smart service ecosystems : the role of socioâtechnical antecedents and affordances
As physical products are increasingly augmented with digital technology, manufacturing firms have become part of the development of so-called smart products and smart services. As such, manufacturing firms are challenged by new market participants and ecosystem partners, particularly from the software development industry, and by the dynamic nature of business relationships. While the academic literature on the distinctive characteristics of ecosystems, particularly digital ecosystems, is rich, the effect of smart service ecosystems' emergence on the foundation of smart products remains uncertain. This study reports on case study research based on 47 semi-structured interviews with four companies that participate in an industrial smart service ecosystem. Taking an affordance-theoretic perspective, we uncover the antecedents of and the process of emergent smart service ecosystems. We find that smart service ecosystems have three socio-technical antecedents: a shared worldview, structural flexibility and integrity, and architecture of participation. We explain the emergence of smart service ecosystems as the result of specialisation in shared affordances and integration of idiosyncratic affordances into collective affordances. We derive seven propositions regarding the emergence of smart services, outline opportunities for further research, and present practical guidelines for manufacturing firms
Optimization of insect cell based protein production processes - online monitoring, expression systems, scale-up
Due to the increasing use of insect cell based expression systems in research and industrial recombinant protein production, the development of efficient and reproducible production processes remains a challenging task. In this context, the application of online monitoring techniques is intended to ensure high and reproducible product qualities already during the early phases of process development. In the following chapter, the most common transient and stable insect cell based expression systems are briefly introduced. Novel applications of insect cell based expression systems for the production of insect derived antimicrobial peptides/proteins (AMPs) are discussed using the example of G. mellonella derived gloverin. Suitable in situ sensor techniques for insect cell culture monitoring in disposable and common bioreactor systems are outlined with respect to optical and capacitive sensor concepts. Since scale-up of production processes is one of the most critical steps in process development, a conclusive overview is given about scale up aspects for industrial insect cell culture processes

Actualizing Affordances: A Socio-Technical Perspective on Big Data Analytics in the Automotive Sector
Big data analytics affects organization in multiple ways, among others in regard to (1) new task possibilities for companies (i.e., affordances), (2) required technology implementations, (3) the development of peoplesâ capabilities as well as a data-driven culture, and (4) the implementation of organizational structures that ensure collaboration across departmental boundaries. Drawing on a multiple-case study approach, we use affordance theory in conjunction with socio-technical systems theory to elaborate ex-ante required organizational changes as well as the subsequent actualization of big data analytics affordances. First results indicate that to actualize big data analyticsâ affordances the successful adaption of components within the socio-technical system (i.e., actors, structures, and technology) is necessary. In this article, we report on our research design as well as preliminary results of an initial case analysis discussing organiza-tional antecedents for the actualization of big data analytics affordances
Capability model for open data: An empirical analysis
Creating superior competitiveness is central to open data
organizationâs survivability in the fast changing and competitive
open data market. In their quest to develop and increase
competitiveness and survivability, many of these organizations
are moving towards developing open data capabilities. Researchbased knowledge on open data capabilities and how they relate to
each other remains sparse, however, with most of the open data
literature focusing on social and economic value of open data, not
capabilities required. By exploring the related literature on
business and organizational capabilities and linking the findings
to the empirical evidence collected through the survey of 49 open
data organizations around the world, this study develops an open
data capability model. The model emerged from our deductive
research process improves both theoretical and practical
understanding of open data capabilities and their relationships
required to help increase competitiveness and survivability of
these types of organizations
Monte Carlo X-ray Scattering Studies in the MeV Regime
A study is shown which is performed to enhance an existing deterministic X-ray simulation method for nondestructive testing applications by including the effect of pair production and annihilation. Therefore, a Monte Carlo simulation tool was used to perform parameter studies. Several materials from polyvinyl chloride to lead and of different lengths were simulated with 109 monoenergetic photons per simulation run. These were used to quantify and evaluate the radial distribution of scattered photons for each length, material and energy as a function of the scattering angle. The results indicate that the radiation originating from the electron-positronannihilation and thus from the pair generation is one major contributor to the total deposited energy only for certain angular ranges whereas for other angles Compton is by far the leading scattering effect. Furthermore, the results indicate that the electron-positron-annihilation radiation is negligible for most imaging tasks and thus unimportant for deterministic scattering simulations
Manipulation of RNA polymerase III by Herpes Simplex Virus-1.
RNA polymerase III (Pol III) transcribes noncoding RNA, including transfer RNA (tRNA), and is commonly targeted during cancer and viral infection. We find that Herpes Simplex Virus-1 (HSV-1) stimulates tRNA expression 10-fold. Perturbation of host tRNA synthesis requires nuclear viral entry, but not synthesis of specific viral transcripts. tRNA with a specific codon bias were not targeted-rather increased transcription was observed from euchromatic, actively transcribed loci. tRNA upregulation is linked to unique crosstalk between the Pol II and III transcriptional machinery. While viral infection results in depletion of Pol II on host mRNA promoters, we find that Pol II binding to tRNA loci increases. Finally, we report Pol III and associated factors bind the viral genome, which suggests a previously unrecognized role in HSV-1 gene expression. These findings provide insight into mechanisms by which HSV-1 alters the host nuclear environment, shifting key processes in favor of the pathogen
