    Abort Region Determinator (ARD) module feasibility report. Mission planning, mission analysis and software formulation

    A detailed performance evaluation of the Abort Region Determinator (ARD) module design was provided in support of OFT-1 ascent and OFT-1 intact launch aborts. The evaluation method used compared ARD results against results obtained using the full-up Space Vehicle Dynamic Simulations program under the same conditions. Results were presented for each of the three major ARD math models: (1) the ascent numerical integrator; (2) the mass model, and (3) the second stage predictor as well as the total ARD module. These results demonstrate that the baselined ARD module meets all design objectives for mission control center orbital flight test launch/abort support

    Regional agriculture surveys using ERTS-1 data

    The Center for Remote Sensing Research has conducted studies designed to evaluate the potential application of ERTS data in performing agricultural inventories, and to develop efficient methods of data handling and analysis useful in the operational context for performing large area surveys. This work has resulted in the development of an integrated system utilizing both human and computer analysis of ground, aerial, and space imagery, which has been shown to be very efficient for regional crop acreage inventories. The technique involves: (1) the delineation of ERTS images into relatively homogeneous strata by human interpreters, (2) the point-by-point classification of the area within each strata on the basis of crop type using a human/machine interactive digital image processing system; and (3) a multistage sampling procedure for the collection of supporting aerial and ground data used in the adjustment and verification of the classification results

    Molar volume of solid isotopic helium mixtures

    Solid isotopic helium mixtures have been studied by path-integral Monte Carlo simulations in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble. This method allowed us to study the molar volume as a function of temperature, pressure, and isotopic composition. At 25 K and 0.2 GPa, the relative difference between molar volumes of isotopically-pure crystals of 3He and 4He is found to be about 3%. This difference decreases under pressure, and for 12 GPa it is smaller than 1%. For isotopically-mixed crystals, a linear relation between lattice parameters and concentrations of helium isotopes is found, in agreement with Vegard's law. The virtual crystal approximation, valid for isotopic mixtures of heavier atoms, does not give reliable results for solid solutions of helium isotopes.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

    The invariant mass spectra of the ppπpp\pi^- and pppp systems produced in the double charge exchange (DCX) of positively charged pions on photoemulsion are analysed. A pronounced peak is observed in the ppπpp\pi^- invariant mass spectrum, while the MppM_{pp} spectrum exhibits a strong Migdal-Watson effect of the proton-proton final state interaction.     The expression levels of three raft-associated molecules in cultivated vascular cells are dependent on culture conditions

    Relaying a signal across the plasma membrane requires functional connections between the partner molecules. Membrane microdomains or lipid rafts provide an environment in which such specific interactions can take place. The integrity of these sites is often taken for granted when signalling pathways are investigated in cell culture. However, it is well known that smooth muscle and endothelial cells undergo cytoskeletal rearrangements during monolayer culturing. Likewise affected - and with potentially important consequences for signalling events - is the organization of the plasma membrane. The expression levels of three raft markers were massively upregulated, and raft-associated 5′-nucleotidase activity increased in conventional monolayer cultures as compared with a spheroidal coculture model, shown to promote the differentiation of endothelial cells. Our data point to a shift of raft components in monolayer cultures and demonstrate potential advantages of the spheroid coculture system for investigation of raft-mediated signalling events in endothelial cell

    Optimal Concentration of Light in Turbid Materials

    In turbid materials it is impossible to concentrate light into a focus with conventional optics. Recently it has been shown that the intensity on a dyed probe inside a turbid material can be enhanced by spatially shaping the wave front of light before it enters a turbid medium. Here we show that this enhancement is due to concentration of light energy to a spot much smaller than a wavelength. We focus light on a dyed probe sphere that is hidden under an opaque layer. The light is optimally concentrated to a focus which does not exceed the smallest focal area physically possible by more than 68%. A comparison between the intensity enhancements of both the emission and excitation light supports the conclusion of optimal light concentration.Comment: We corrected an ambiguous description of the focus size in our abstract and text pointed out by an anonymous refere

    LRX Proteins play a crucial role in pollen grain and pollen tube cell wall development

    Leucine-rich repeat extensins (LRXs) are chimeric proteins containing an N-terminal leucine-rich repeat (LRR) and a C-terminal extensin domain. LRXs are involved in cell wall formation in vegetative tissues and required for plant growth. However, the nature of their role in these cellular processes remains to be elucidated. Here, we used a combination of molecular techniques, light microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy to characterize mutants of pollen-expressed LRXs in Arabidopsis thaliana. Mutations in multiple pollen-expressed lrx genes causes severe defects in pollen germination and pollen tube (PT) growth, resulting in a reduced seed set. Physiological experiments demonstrate that manipulating Ca2+ availability partially suppresses the PT growth defects, suggesting that LRX proteins influence Ca2+-related processes. Furthermore, we show that LRX protein localizes to the cell wall, and its LRR-domain (which likely mediates protein-protein interactions) is associated with the plasma membrane. Mechanical analyses by cellular force microscopy and finite element method-based modelling revealed significant changes in the material properties of the cell wall and the fine-tuning of cellular biophysical parameters in the mutants compared to the wild type. The results indicate that LRX proteins might play a role in cell wall-plasma membrane communication, influencing cell wall formation and cellular mechanics

    Bose-Einstein Condensation at a Helium Surface

    Path Integral Monte Carlo was used to calculate the Bose-Einstein condensate fraction at the surface of a helium film at T=0.77KT=0.77 K, as a function of density. Moving from the center of the slab to the surface, the condensate fraction was found to initially increase with decreasing density to a maximum value of 0.9 before decreasing. Long wavelength density correlations were observed in the static structure factor at the surface of the slab. Finally, a surface dispersion relation was calculated from imaginary-time density-density correlations.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
