On the possibility of Deeply Bound Hadronic Molecules from single Pion Exchange
Pion exchange in S-wave between hadrons that are themselves in a relative
S-wave can shift energies by hundreds of MeV. In the case of charmed mesons
a spectroscopy of quasi-molecular states may arise consistent
with enigmatic charmonium states observed above 4 GeV in annihilation.
A possible explanation of and
is found. Searches in channels as well as B decays are
recommended to test this hypothesis.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. Version accepted to PRL. Equation 3 of v1 of this

Feathered Glory : A Poet in Flight from Medieval Ireland to the Twentieth Century
Feathered Glory explores the relevance of the medieval Irish character Suibhne, usually anglicized as Sweeney, to twentieth-century writers. Suibhne is the protagonist of the twelfth-century text Buile Suibhne, in which he is depicted as a minor king who goes mad on the field of battle, abandons his kingdom and his role in society, and flies like a bird into the woods, where he becomes a poet of exceptional power and beauty. This tale languished in obscurity for many centuries, but following J. G. O\u27Keeffe\u27s publication of a scholarly edition and English translation of Buile Suibhne in 1913, Suibhne has come to serve as an important precursor figure for a number of modern writers, especially in Ireland. My dissertation opens with an examination of the medieval Suibhne, with particular emphasis on his role as a figure of the artist, and then moves on to consider three of the most substantive twentieth-century iterations of his tale: Flann O\u27Brien\u27s exuberantly experimental novel At Swim-Two-Birds, Seamus Heaney\u27s volumes Sweeney Astray and Station Island, and the unfinished play Sweeney Agonistes as well as four poems by T. S. Eliot that feature the character Sweeney, who bears a significant thematic resemblance to the medieval Suibhne.
While these texts vary widely both in form and in the use they make of the figure of Suibhne, they share an interest in the role and portrayal of the artist that tends toward a modernist revision of the Romantic model. Buile Suibhne supplies particularly fertile material for such a project, for the text embodies numerous tensions relevant to the role of the artist, most notably conflicts among the political, religious, and aesthetic realms and an internal contradiction between the solitary model of the poet that the work seems to extol and the anonymous, collective process by which the text itself was compiled. Walter Benjamin\u27s groundbreaking work on reproduction is a theoretical lynchpin of my analysis, together with Jacques Derrida\u27s discussion of iteration in Signature Event Context and Limited, Inc.
Nucleon-Nucleon Interactions from the Quark Model
We report on investigations of the applicability of non-relativistic
constituent quark models to the low-energy nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction.
The major innovations of a resulting NN potential are the use of the P
decay model and quark model wave functions to derive nucleon-nucleon-meson
form-factors, and the use of a colored spin-spin contact hyperfine interaction
to model the repulsive core rather than the phenomenological treatment common
in other NN potentials. We present the results of the model for experimental
free NN scattering phase shifts, S-wave scattering lengths and effective ranges
and deuteron properties. Plans for future study are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. To appear in Proceedings of XIII

Charmonium production in e+e- to \psi + X(c\bar c) and e+e- to D*D_J
The dominance of chi_0 in the data for e+e- to psi + chi_J(c\bar{c}) is shown
to violate OZI factorization. Single gluon exchange gives a non-factorizing
effective S.L interaction that generates a large scalar production amplitude.
This also has observable effects near threshold in e+e- to D*D_J, where
enhancements of D*D_0 and DD_1 channels are predicted. Further tests and
implications are discussed.Comment: 9 pages 1 figure. Substatial rewrite from previous versions.

The discrete contribution to
The decay mode is proposed in order to
experimentally identify the effects of the coupling of charmonium states to the
continuum states. To have a better understanding of such a two-photon
decay process, in this work we restrict ourselves to investigate the
contribution of the discrete part, in which the photons are mainly produced via
the intermediate states . Besides calculating the resonance
contributions of , we also take into account the
contributions of the higher excited states and the interference
effect among the 1P and 2P states. We find that the contribution of the 2P
states and the interference terms to the total decay width is very tiny.
However, for specific regions of the Dalitz plot, off the resonance peaks, we
find that these contributions are sizable and should also be accounted for. We
also provide the photon spectrum and study the polarization of .Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures, minor changes, references added, accepted

Calf pre-weaning traits and immunoglobulin response to bovine viral diarrhea virus vaccination
Calfhood vaccination for bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a relatively new concept, and protocols are evolving. Our objective was to determine effects of BVDV type I vaccination protocol, calf behavior (chute score, and chute exit velocity), and gender on calf gain and immunoglobulin (Ig) response. Crossbred calves (n = 64) were randomly allotted to one of two vaccination protocols. In protocol 1, calves were vaccinated at 60 d of age (d 0) and at weaning (d 147). Calves assigned to protocol 2 were vaccinated against BVDV type I at 21 d prior to (d 126) and at weaning (d 147). Blood samples were collected from half of the calves in each protocol group on d 0 (60 days of age), d 21, d 126 (21 days prior to weaning), and d 147 (at weaning); serum was harvested and Ig titers were determined. Titers for BVDV type I were transformed (log base 2) and analyzed using a mixed model procedure. Calves vaccinated at d 0 and weaning had larger (P \u3c 0.0001) titers than calves vaccinated at d 126 and weaning (7.5 ± 0.36 and 5.1 ± 0.36, respectively). Mean BVDV titers were larger (P \u3c 0.0001) on d 147 when compared with d 126, d 21, and d 0 (8.3 ± 0.39, 5.1 ± 0.40, 5.9 ± 0.39 and 5.7 ± 0.39, respectively). A treatment × day interaction (P \u3c 0.0001) also affected BVDV titers. However, BVDV titers were not affected (P \u3e 0.05) by calf gender, chute score, or chute exit velocity. Weaning weight and pre-weaning average daily gain (ADG) were not related to BVDV type I titers. This study indicated that vaccinating beef calves against BVDV was effective in triggering an Ig response. Furthermore, our results suggest that calves should be vaccinated against BVDV type I at 60 d of age for greater disease resistance
Nucleon-Meson Coupling Constants and Form Factors in the Quark Model
We demonstrate the calculation of the coupling constants and form factors
required by effective hadron lagrangians using the quark model. These relations
follow from equating expressions for strong transition amplitudes in the two
approaches. As examples we derive the NNm nucleon-meson coupling constants and
form factors for m = pi, eta, eta', sigma, a_0, omega and rho, using harmonic
oscillator quark model meson and baryon wavefunctions and the 3P0 decay model;
this is a first step towards deriving a quark-based model of the NN force at
all separations. This technique should be useful in the application of
effective lagrangians to processes in which the lack of data precludes the
direct determination of coupling constants and form factors from experiment.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
