Impact of high frequency waves on the ocean altimeter range bias
New aircraft observations are presented on the range determination error in satellite altimetry associated with ocean waves. Laser-based measurements of the cross correlation between the gravity wave slope and elevation are reported for the first time. These observations provide direct access to a long, O(10 m), gravity wave statistic central to nonlinear wave theory prediction of the altimeter sea state bias. Coincident Ka-band radar scattering data are used to estimate an electromagnetic (EM) range bias analogous to that in satellite altimetry. These data, along with ancillary wind and wave slope variance estimates, are used alongside existing theory to evaluate the extent of long- versus short-wave, O(cm), control of the bias. The longer wave bias contribution to the total EM bias is shown to range from 25 to as much as 100%. Moreover, on average the term is linearly related to wind speed and to the gravity wave slope variance, consistent with WNL theory. The EM bias associated with interactions between long and short waves is obtained assuming the effect is additive to the independently observed long-wave factor. This second component is also a substantial contributor, is observed to be quadratic in wind speed or wave slope, and dominates at moderate wind speeds. The behavior is shown to be consistent with EM bias prediction based in hydrodynamic modulation theory. Study implications for improved correction of the on-orbit satellite sea state bias are discussed
The Deep Diffuse Extragalactic Radio Sky at 1.75 GHz
We present a study of diffuse extragalactic radio emission at GHz
from part of the ELAIS-S1 field using the Australia Telescope Compact Array.
The resulting mosaic is deg, with a roughly constant noise region
of deg used for analysis. The image has a beam size of arcsec and instrumental Jy beam. Using point-source models from the ATLAS survey, we
subtract the discrete emission in this field for Jy
beam. Comparison of the source-subtracted probability distribution, or
\pd, with the predicted distribution from unsubtracted discrete emission and
noise, yields an excess of Jy beam. Taking this as
an upper limit on any extended emission we constrain several models of extended
source counts, assuming arcmin. The best-fitting
models yield temperatures of the radio background from extended emission of
mK, giving an upper limit on the total temperature at
GHz of mK. Further modelling shows that our data are
inconsistent with the reported excess temperature of ARCADE2 to a source-count
limit of Jy. Our new data close a loop-hole in the previous
constraints, because of the possibility of extended emission being resolved out
at higher resolution. Additionally, we look at a model of cluster halo emission
and two WIMP dark matter annihilation source-count models, and discuss general
constraints on any predicted counts from such sources. Finally, we report the
derived integral count at GHz using the deepest discrete count plus our
new extended-emission limits, providing numbers that can be used for planning

After a long silence, Lake Vui on Ambae Island burst into spectacular life on the 28th of November 2005, disrupting the lives of 10 000 inhabitants on this sleepy tropical island in the SW Pacific. "Surtseyan- style" explosions burst through the Island's summit lake waters forming a new tuff-cone and threatening to form deadly lahars or volcanic floods. Three-body interactions in complex fluids: virial coefficients from simulation finite-size effects
A simulation technique is described for quantifying the contribution of
three-body interactions to the thermodynamical properties of coarse-grained
representations of complex fluids. The method is based on comparing the third
virial coefficient for a complex fluid with that of an approximate
coarse-grained model described by a pair potential. To obtain we
introduce a new technique which expresses its value in terms of the measured
volume-dependent asymptote of a certain structural function. The strategy is
applicable to both Molecular Dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation. Its utility
is illustrated via measurements of three-body effects in models of star polymer
and highly size-asymmetrical colloid-polymer mixtures.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
Seasonal Occurrence of the Sod Webworm Moths (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) of Ohio
While nearly 100 species of sod webworms are known to occur in North America, the species complex and seasonal occurrence of these moths has been documented in relatively few states. For Ohio, there is little published record of the sod webworm species complex, and the seasonal occurrence of only a few economically important species has been documented. Using black light traps, sod web worm adult flight activity was monitored over the course of three to five years at four different locations throughout Ohio. In this paper we report the seasonal occurrence of sod web worms species captured at these locations. These data provide a historical benchmark of sod webÂworm species diversity, local abundance, and seasonal occurrence in Ohio
