Tidal Modulation of Ice-shelf Flow: a Viscous Model of the Ross Ice Shelf

Three stations near the calving front of the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica, recorded GPS data through a full spring-neap tidal cycle in November 2005. The data revealed a diurnal horizontal motion that varied both along and transverse to the long-term average velocity direction, similar to tidal signals observed in other ice shelves and ice streams. Based on its periodicity, it was hypothesized that the signal represents a flow response of the Ross Ice Shelf to the diurnal tides of the Ross Sea. To assess the influence of the tide on the ice-shelf motion, two hypotheses were developed. The first addressed the direct response of the ice shelf to tidal forcing, such as forces due to sea-surface slopes or forces due to sub-ice-shelf currents. The second involved the indirect response of ice-shelf flow to the tidal signals observed in the ice streams that source the ice shelf. A finite-element model, based on viscous creep flow, was developed to test these hypotheses, but succeeded only in falsifying both hypotheses, i.e. showing that direct tidal effects produce too small a response, and indirect tidal effects produce a response that is not smooth in time. This nullification suggests that a combination of viscous and elastic deformation is required to explain the observations

A Pilot Study of a Modified Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Smoking Cessation Treatment for Veterans with PTSD

Veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have high rates of smoking and significant difficulties with quitting. Acceptance and mindfulness-based techniques may enhance smoking cessation approaches for veterans with PTSD as they are designed to improve emotion regulation skills related to coping with elevated negative affect and withdrawal symptoms associated with quit attempts. Veterans with current PTSD and smoking ≥ 15 cigarettes/day (N=19) participated in an open trial of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Veterans with PTSD and Tobacco Use (ACT-PT). Participants attended nine weekly individual counseling sessions and received eight weeks of the nicotine patch. Primary outcomes included expired-air carbon monoxide confirmed seven-day point prevalence abstinence, number of cigarettes/day at the end of treatment, and PTSD symptoms on the PTSD Checklist (PCL). Intent-to-treat analyses examined pre-treatment to post-treatment scores on the PCL. At the end of treatment (one month after targeted quit date), 37% (7/19) of participants were abstinent from smoking, 37% (7/19) were abstinent from smoking at the one month follow-up, and 16% (3/19) were abstinent at the three month follow-up. Subjects reduced from 26 cigarettes/day at baseline to 10 cigarettes/day at the end of treatment (p\u3c.001), and 15 cigarettes/day at the 3-month follow-up (p=.002). PTSD symptoms significantly decreased from baseline to the end of treatment (p\u3c.001), and continued to remain significantly decreased at the 3-month follow-up (p=.011). The retention rate (74%), client satisfaction ratings and qualitative feedback from subjects indicated that the treatment was acceptable. Although preliminary, these results suggest that ACT-PT is a promising smoking cessation treatment for veterans with PTSD. Longer follow-up and randomized controlled studies are needed

The glacial geomorphology of upper Godthåbsfjord (Nuup Kangerlua) in south-west Greenland

Information on outlet glacier dynamics, prior to this, are limited due to both a lack of observations and a paucity of mapped or mappable deglacial evidence which restricts our understanding of centennial to millennial timescale dynamics of the GrIS. Here we present glacial geomorphological mapping, for upper Godthåbsfjord, covering 5800 km 2 at a scale of 1:92,000, using a combination of ASTER GDEM V2, a medium-resolution DEM (error < 10 m horizontal and < 6 m vertical accuracy), panchromatic orthophotographs and ground truthing. This work provides a detailed geomorphological assessment for the area, compiled as a single map, comprising of moraines, meltwater channels, streamlined bedrock, sediment lineations, ice-dammed lakes, trimlines, terraces, gullied sediment and marine limits. Whilst some of the landforms have been previously identified, the new information presented here improves our understanding of ice margin behaviour and can be used for future numerical modelling and landform dating programmes. Data also form the basis for palaeoglaciological reconstructions and contribute towards understanding of the centennial to millennial timescale record of this sector of the GrIS.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Piloting Signs of Safety : A Deaf-Accessible Toolkit for Trauma and Addiction

The Deaf community - a minority group of 500,000 Americans who use American Sign Language (ASL) - experiences trauma and addiction at rates double to the general population. Yet, there are no evidence-based treatments that have been evaluated to treat trauma, addiction, or other behavioral health conditions among Deaf people. Current evidence-based treatments fail to meet the needs of Deaf clients. One example is Seeking Safety, a well-validated therapy for people recovering from trauma and addiction. Seeking Safety includes a therapist guide and client handouts for 25 therapy sessions, each teaching clients a safe coping skill. When Seeking Safety was used with Deaf clients, unique barriers were revealed with regard to the client materials: they were presented in complex English instead of ASL, nor sensitive to Deaf people’s culture, social norms, and history of oppression. To address these barriers, Dr. Anderson assembled a team of Deaf and hearing researchers, clinicians, filmmakers, actors, artists, and Deaf people in recovery to develop Signs of Safety, a Deaf-accessible toolkit to be used with Seeking Safety. Signs of Safety is comprised of a therapist companion guide and population-specific client materials, including visual handouts and ASL teaching stories on digital video, which present key learning points via an “educational soap opera.” Dr. Anderson is currently leading a pilot study of Signs of Safety. Preliminary results show that participants are reporting symptom reduction from baseline to follow-up and high levels of satisfaction with the model, giving us the confidence to further pursue this line of research

Investigating the Near-Infrared Properties of Planetary Nebulae. I. Narrowband Images

We present the results of a near-infrared narrowband imaging survey of planetary nebulae. Objects were selected in a way that complements similar surveys done at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. No new detections of molecular hydrogen emission were made. The H2 is frequently found to be extended, except in young, visibly compact objects. Our results are consistent with the already determined correlation of H2 emission with planetary nebula morphological type.
