The Wheel Garden: Project Based Learning for Cross Curriculum Education

    Get PDF
In this article, we discuss project-based learning in the context of a wheel garden as an instructional tool in science and mathematics education. A wheel garden provides multiple opportunities to teach across the curriculum, to integrate disciplines, and to promote community involvement. Grounded in the theoretical framework of constructivism, the wheel garden provides a multidisciplined educational tool that provides a hands-on, non-traditional arena for learning. We will examine some of the cultural, art, science, and mathematics connections made with this projec

Isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of composites of poly(propylene) and MWCNTs

The isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization behaviour of composites of a poly(propylene) (PP) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were investigated using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). An Avrami analysis was used to study the isothermal crystallization kinetics of unfilled PP and composites of PP with MWCNT loadings up to 2 (w/w). The value of the Avrami exponent (n) was greater than 2 for all samples, confirming the primary stage of crystal growth is a three-dimensional phenomenon. The activation energy (ΔE), determined using an Arrhenius type expression, for the isothermal crystallization of PP increased from 87 kJ for unfilled PP to 228 kJ on incorporation of 2 (w/w) MWCNTs to PP. An attempt was made to model the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of composites of PP and MWCNTs using a range of mathematical models, including the Jeziorny extended Avrami equation, Ozawa equation, Cazé and Chuah average Avrami exponents, and a combined Avrami/Ozawa approach. The Jeziorny extended Avrami approach confirmed that the non-isothermal crystallization of MWCNT filled PP is clearly a two-stage process. Fitting of the Ozawa model was shown to be not valid and both the Cazé and Chuah average Avrami approaches were ineffective as neither took in to account the effects of secondary crystallization. Only the combined Avrami/Ozawa method successfully modelled the two-stage crystallization of composites of PP and MWCNTs. The activation energy (ΔE) for the non-isothermal crystallization of PP on addition of MWCNTs increased with increasing MWCNT content, up to as high as 726 kJ

This work is about the development and application of computer light simulacra as poetic option that is aesthetically and empirically investigated in a way that involves the comparison of my perceptions and horizons, as an artist, with those of my spectators, as a way to find the proximities and distances between those perceptions and horizons as creations necessarily implied in the fruition aesthetically qualified of these simulacra, in favor of a greater understanding of what could be a possible encounter or communication between author and receiver and in the expectation of a gradual revelation of the artistic proposals corresponding to these simulacra, by the sum of perceptions and horizons taken from those spectators

Specifically, this paper emphasizes two aspects concerning the use of virtual realities for the conception of visual art works. The first is that these art works make us ready to take a new look at the synthetic images, as they take them as peculiar resources to make visual analogies to our imaginary. The second is that these art works create new instances of the contemporary art-science, as they want the artist to use conceptual and operational tools of the accounting science. In the present research were observed the differences between the synthetic image and precedent categories of images. It was judged the space-time prepared by the computer technologies. It was realized that the virtual reality art works are just one more set in the contemporary computer art. An art in which the artist is not concerned with the conception of finished images anymore, but with the creation of contexts. It was also realized that interactivity is an element of art, reality and imaginary, and makes us think about them in a new way. It was understood that we live a moment in which the knowledge construction is being reconsidered. In this new thought, subjectivity is back as an honor invited entity, getting art and science closer to each other

The austral components of the Neogene South American crocodylian fauna: the northeast Miocene-Pliocene Argentinean record

During the last years the knowledge about derived eusuchian crocodiles has been increased. Anatomical and phylogenetic approaches as well as new fossil records have lighted the evolutive and biogeographic history of several groups. In this way, paleontological research on Miocene-Pliocene South American taxa have provided new information that allowed supporting taxonomical and biogeographical hypotheses, many of them erected since the end of XIX century. The richest and more explored regions concerning Mio-Pliocene crocodylians in South America correspond to basins that surround the areas of Urumaco (Venezuela), La Venta (Colombia), Acre (Brazil), and Paraná (Northeast Argentina). Late Miocene-Pliocene fossils from Paraná were recovered from the "Conglomerado Osífero" (Ituzaingó Formation) and assigned to several taxa of Caimaninae (Alligatoroidea) and one Gavialoidea. Recent research has allowed exploring the taxonomical diversity of this fauna, including a descriptive revision and phylogenetic reanalysis of bizarre forms as Mourasuchus species. The Miocene-Pliocene "fauna" of crocodiles recorded in Northeastern Argentina differs from coeval ones of Northern South America by the absence of sebecids, crocodyloids, some alligatorid genera (as Purussaurus, Melanosuchus, and Paleosuchus), and by the rarity of gavialoid species. Giant forms, conspicuous in the Northern South American deposits, are virtually rare in the southern latitudes. Despite it, the austral South American crocodilian fauna exhibits strong affinities with that from the Northern Mio-Pliocene, sharing taxa at generic and even at specific levels (Gryposuchus neogaeus (Rusconi), Mourasuchus nativus (Gasparini), and Caiman latirostris (Daudin) [= C. cf. lutescens]). Such aquatic forms might indicate partial connections of drainage basins through swampy areas on their boundaries. These fresh water habits would have permitted migration of some of the crocodiles, but would have been an effective barrier for the migration of other taxa (e.g., cryptodirans turtles) as well as preclude the assumption of an intracontinental seaway link, as already proposed by some authors. Nevertheless, the historical factors that determinate the geographic patterns of distribution of crocodyles in South America should de evaluated in a biogeographical context.
