    How partnerships for community-based health professions training were affected by national changes in funding

    Background: Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) have contributed to U.S. healthcare workforce training since 1971. National funders recently refocused efforts from K-12 students to matriculated health profession students, which reduced annual funding by $75,000 (25%) per year per Center. Objectives: To describe how community partnership changed due to funding reductions. Methods: Key informant interviews were conducted with all four regional center directors with community partnerships. Lessons learned: Hosted regional centers navigated partnerships in ways that did not significantly change programs because the host institutions supported continuing the partnerships. Independent centers experienced significant changes in partnerships by ending well-established programs and starting new programs with new partners. Both hosted and independent centers took salary cuts, downsized staff, and applied for grants and contracts to fill the funding gap. Improved communication with the Oregon AHEC program office was reported as needed. Conclusions: Navigating partnerships differed according to host status

    Assessing COVID-19 testing strategies in K-12 schools in underserved populations: Study protocol for a cluster-randomized trial

    BACKGROUND: Since March 2020, COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted communities of color within the United States. As schools have shifted from virtual to in-person learning, continual guidance is necessary to understand appropriate interventions to prevent SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Weekly testing of students and staff for SARS-CoV-2 within K-12 school setting could provide an additional barrier to school-based transmission, especially within schools unable to implement additional mitigation strategies and/or are in areas of high transmission. This study seeks to understand the role that weekly SARS-CoV-2 testing could play in K-12 schools. In addition, through qualitative interviews and listening sessions, this research hopes to understand community concerns and barriers regarding COVID-19 testing, COVID-19 vaccine, and return to school during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS/DESIGN: Sixteen middle and high schools from five school districts have been randomized into one of the following categories: (1) Weekly screening + symptomatic testing or (2) Symptomatic testing only. The primary outcome for this study will be the average of the secondary attack rate of school-based transmission per case. School-based transmission will also be assessed through qualitative contact interviews with positive contacts identified by the school contact tracers. Lastly, new total numbers of weekly cases and contacts within a school-based quarantine will provide guidance on transmission rates. Qualitative focus groups and interviews have been conducted to provide additional understanding to the acceptance of the intervention and barriers faced by the community regarding SARS-CoV-2 testing and vaccination. DISCUSSION: This study will provide greater understanding of the benefit that weekly screening testing can provide in reducing SARS-CoV-2 transmission within K-12 schools. Close collaboration with community partners and school districts will be necessary for the success of this and similar studies. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT04875520 . Registered May 6, 2021

    Electrons, Photons, and Force: Quantitative Single-Molecule Measurements from Physics to Biology

    Single-molecule measurement techniques have illuminated unprecedented details of chemical behavior, including observations of the motion of a single molecule on a surface, and even the vibration of a single bond within a molecule. Such measurements are critical to our understanding of entities ranging from single atoms to the most complex protein assemblies. We provide an overview of the strikingly diverse classes of measurements that can be used to quantify single-molecule properties, including those of single macromolecules and single molecular assemblies, and discuss the quantitative insights they provide. Examples are drawn from across the single-molecule literature, ranging from ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy studies of adsorbate diffusion on surfaces to fluorescence studies of protein conformational changes in solution

    Template-assisted fabrication of nano-biomaterials

    “One-dimensional†nanostructures like nanotubes and nanorods hold great potential for a wide variety of applications. In particular, one-dimensional nanostructures may be able to provide many significant advantages over traditional spherical particles for drug delivery applications. Recent studies have shown that long, filamentous particles circulate longer within the body than spherical particles, giving them more time to reach the target area and deliver their payload more efficiently. In addition, studies investigating the diffusion of drugs through nanochannels have shown that the drug diffusion profiles can be controlled by varying the nanochannel diameter when the drug diameter and nanochannel diameter are close in size. The combination of increased circulation time and controllable drug release profiles give onedimensional nanostructure great potential for future drug release applications. To fully realize this potential, a simple, low cost, and versatile fabrication method for one-dimensional nanostructures needs to be developed and exploited. The objective of this work is to demonstrate the versatility of template-assisted nanofabrication methods by fabricating a variety of unique protein and polymer one-dimensional nanostructures. This demonstration includes the adaptation of two different template-assisted methods, namely layer-by-layer assembly and template wetting, to fabricate glucose oxidase nanocapsules with both ends sealed, segmented polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate) nanorods, and poly(L-lactide)-poly(methyl methacrylate) core-shell nanowires with adjustable shell layer thicknesses. The unique nanostructure morphologies that were achieved using our novel fabrication methods will open the arena for future research focused on process control and optimization for specific applications
