WORLD WIDE WEB ACCESS TO CORPORA
For a variety of reason, getting started in corpus linguistics is difficult. The starting point for the W3Corpora project was that providing access to corpora via the World Wide Web offer a way round many of these difficulties. The paper describes the motivation for the project, gives on overview of the W3Corpora web site that was built, and gives artechnical but accessible description of the corpus searching techniques used. Some discussion of similar web sites is provided.
Non-Restrictive Relative Clauses in Construction Based HPSG.
Abstract This paper presents an account of English non-restrictive ('appositive') relative clauses (NRCs) in the framework of 'construction based' HPSG. Specifically, it shows how the account of restrictive relative clause constructions presented in Sag (1997) can be extended to provide an account of the syntax and semantics of NRCs and of the main differences between NRCs and restrictive relatives. The analysis reconciles the semantic intuition that NRCs behave like independent clauses with their subordinate syntax. A significant point is that, in contrast with many other approaches, it employs only existing, independently motivated theoretical apparatus, and requires absolutely no new structures, features, or types
One of Those Constructions that Really Needs a Proper Analysis
We describe, and provide an HPSG account of, a hitherto little studied English construction (of which the title of the paper is an instance) involving an agreement mismatch: a partitive construction in which a plural nominal is apparently modified by a singular relative clause
THE BIG MESS CONSTRUCTION
Abstract An LFG treatment is proposed for the 'Big Mess' construction in English, in which under certain circumstances adjectival expressions appear before the determiner (as in 'that big a mess'), rather than in the normal position between the determiner and noun ('a very big mess', compare '*a that big mess'). Empirically, the analysis is superior in coverage to existing treatments
Cultural Mapping in Northeast Salem: A Civic Engagement Study
33 pagesThis document outlines work done by graduate students in the Art and
Sustainable Society course in the University of Oregon Arts and Administration
Program during the Fall term 2010 and provides recommendations to the City of
Salem for further study. It can and should be used as an example and guide for
further community mapping.
The project focused on mapping the cultural resources of the Latino population
of Northeast Salem over the course of 10 weeks. The City of Salem is interested
in facilitating more engagement within this community through identification
of existing cultural resources, their patterns of use, and the gaps that exist
among them. The report reviews the students’ process of cultural mapping, the
information gathered, trends identified within the information, and suggestions
for further study and engagement
COSMIC-2 Precise Orbit Determination
We present initial results for post-processed GNSS orbit and clock estimation for the FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 (Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate) constellation. The six COSMIC-2 satellites launched on June 25, 2019 into a 24 deg inclination, ~725 km circular orbit. The primary Tri-GNSS Radio-occultation Receiver System (TGRS) payload tracks GPS and GLONASS signals on two upward looking precise orbit determination (POD) antennas. We evaluate three GPS and GPS+GLONASS POD solutions applied at the COSMIC Data Analysis and Archive Center using the Bernese GNSS Software. The obtained results are very consistent for the six satellites. Orbit precision estimates are below the 10 cm and 0.1 mm/s 3D position and velocity requirements, respectively. A test case applying carrier phase ambiguity resolution indicates this technique may support the generation of more precise orbits in the future
Lunar Surface Mission Operations Scenario and Considerations
Planetary surface operations have been studied since the last visit of humans to the Moon, including conducting analog missions. Mission Operations lessons from these activities are summarized. Characteristics of forecasted surface operations are compared to current human mission operations approaches. Considerations for future designs of mission operations are assessed
IVOA Recommendation: Spectrum Data Model 1.1
We present a data model describing the structure of spectrophotometric
datasets with spectral and temporal coordinates and associated metadata. This
data model may be used to represent spectra, time series data, segments of SED
(Spectral Energy Distributions) and other spectral or temporal associations.Comment: http://www.ivoa.ne
Filling Key Gaps in Population and Community Ecology
We propose research to fill key gaps in the areas of population and community ecology, based on a National Science Foundation workshop identifying funding priorities for the next 5–10 years. Our vision for the near future of ecology focuses on three core areas: predicting the strength and context-dependence of species interactions across multiple scales; identifying the importance of feedbacks from individual interactions to ecosystem dynamics; and linking pattern with process to understand species coexistence. We outline a combination of theory development and explicit, realistic tests of hypotheses needed to advance population and community ecology
