Influence of order-disorder transitions on oxygen permeability through selected nonstoichiometric perovskite-type oxides
New results on the oxygen permeability of perovskite-type oxides SrCo0.8B'0.2O3¿¿ (with B'=Cr, Fe, Co and Cu) and La0.6Sr0.4CoO3¿¿ are presented. The occurrence of order-disorder transitions at elevated temperatures (790¿940°C) in these phases has been confirmed by DSC measurements and, in some cases, by X-ray powder diffraction of samples either slowly cooled or quenched from high temperature after annealing in different atmospheres. The oxygen permeability found upon exposing opposite sides of sealed disc specimens to a stream of air and of helium, respectively, increases sharply (between 5¿6 orders of magnitude up to 0.3¿3×10¿7 mol cm¿2s¿1) at the onset of the transition from a low-temperature vacancy-ordered state to defec t perovskite, except for SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3¿¿. In the latter case only a slight anomaly is found in the Arrhenius plot of th e oxygen permeability at 790°C. The comparatively high oxygen flux through SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3¿¿ observed at intermediate tempe ratures is interpreted in terms of a two-phase mixture of a vacancy-ordered state and disordered perovskite, while above 790°C the sample is single-phase of defect perovskite structure
Sticks and carrots for reducing property-level risks from floods: an EU-US comparative perspective
In discussing legal and policy frameworks for flood risk management, the attention is often put on increasing resilience in public spaces. In terms of private properties, discussions are geared toward enhancing the adaptive capacity of future developments. This paper focuses on the instruments associated with resilience of existing privately owned residential buildings mainly from the perspective of post-flood policies and compensation regimes. The paper scrutinizes the relevant legal and policy landscapes in the United States, the European Union and two Member States – the UK and the Netherlands. The goal is to provide mutual lessons learned between the EU, its Member States, and the US and to set forth generally applicable recommendations for improving post-flood policies for existing buildings
Trajectories of land use change in Europe: a model-based exploration of rural futures
Land use change is characterized by a high diversity of change trajectories depending on the local conditions, regional context and external influences. Policy intervention aims to counteract the negative consequences of these changes and provide incentives for positive developments. Region typologies are a common tool to cluster regions with similar characteristics and possibly similar policy needs. This paper provides a typology of land use change in Europe at a high spatial resolution based on a series of different scenarios of land use change for the period 2000-2030. A series of simulation models ranging from the global to the landscape level are used to translate scenario conditions in terms of demographic, economic and policy change into changes in European land use pattern. A typology developed based on these simulation results identifies the main trajectories of change across Europe: agricultural abandonment, agricultural expansion and urbanization. The results are combined with common typologies of landscape and rurality. The findings indicate that the typologies based on current landscape and ruralities are poor indicators of the land use dynamics simulated for the regions. It is advocated that typologies based on (simulated) future dynamics of land change are more appropriate to identify regions with potentially similar policy need
Developmental Changes in Conflict Resolution Styles in Parent–Adolescent Relationships: A Four-Wave Longitudinal Study
In this study, changes in three conflict resolution styles in parent–adolescent relationships were investigated: positive problem solving, conflict engagement, and withdrawal. Questionnaires about these conflict resolution styles were completed by 314 early adolescents (M = 13.3 years; 50.6% girls) and both parents for four consecutive years. Adolescents’ reported use of positive problem solving increased with mothers, but did not change with fathers. Fathers reported an increase of positive problem solving with adolescents, whereas mothers reported no change. Adolescents’ use of conflict engagement was found to temporarily increase with mothers, but showed no change with fathers. Mothers and fathers reported a decrease in conflict engagement with adolescents. Adolescents’ use of withdrawal with parents increased, although this increase was temporarily with mothers. Mothers reported no change in withdrawal, whereas fathers’ use of withdrawal increased. Generally, we found that both adolescents and their parents changed in their use of conflict resolution from early to middle adolescence. These results show that conflict resolution in parent–adolescent relationships gradually change in favor of a more horizontal relationship
Design and characterization of dielectric filled TM microwave cavities for ultrafast electron microscopy
Microwave cavities oscillating in the TM mode can be used as dynamic
electron-optical elements inside an electron microscope. By filling the cavity
with a dielectric material it becomes more compact and power efficient,
facilitating the implementation in an electron microscope. However, the
incorporation of the dielectric material makes the manufacturing process more
difficult. Presented here are the steps taken to characterize the dielectric
material, and to reproducibly fabricate dielectric filled cavities. Also
presented are two versions with improved capabilities. The first, called a
dual-mode cavity, is designed to support two modes simultaneously. The second
has been optimized for low power consumption. With this optimized cavity a
magnetic field strength of 2.84 0.07 mT was generated at an input power
of 14.2 0.2 W. Due to the low input powers and small dimensions, these
dielectric cavities are ideal as electron-optical elements for electron
microscopy setups
Simulating progressive motor neuron degeneration and collateral reinnervation in motor neuron diseases using a dynamic muscle model based on human single motor unit recordings
Objective.To simulate progressive motor neuron loss and collateral reinnervation in motor neuron diseases (MNDs) by developing a dynamic muscle model based on human single motor unit (MU) surface-electromyography (EMG) recordings.Approach.Single MU potentials recorded with high-density surface-EMG from thenar muscles formed the basic building blocks of the model. From the baseline MU pool innervating a muscle, progressive MU loss was simulated by removal of MUs, one-by-one. These removed MUs underwent collateral reinnervation with scenarios varying from 0% to 100%. These scenarios were based on a geometric variable, reflecting the overlap in MU territories using the spatiotemporal profiles of single MUs and a variable reflecting the efficacy of the reinnervation process. For validation, we tailored the model to generate compound muscle action potential (CMAP) scans, which is a promising surface-EMG method for monitoring MND patients. Selected scenarios for reinnervation that matched observed MU enlargements were used to validate the model by comparing markers (including the maximum CMAP and a motor unit number estimate (MUNE)) derived from simulated and recorded CMAP scans in a cohort of 49 MND patients and 22 age-matched healthy controls.Main results.The maximum CMAP at baseline was 8.3 mV (5th-95th percentile: 4.6 mV-11.8 mV). Phase cancellation caused an amplitude drop of 38.9% (5th-95th percentile, 33.0%-45.7%). To match observations, the geometric variable had to be set at 40% and the efficacy variable at 60%-70%. The Δ maximum CMAP between recorded and simulated CMAP scans as a function of fitted MUNE was -0.4 mV (5th-95th percentile = -4.0 - +2.4 mV).Significance.The dynamic muscle model could be used as a platform to train personnel in applying surface-EMG methods prior to their use in clinical care and trials. Moreover, the model may pave the way to compare biomarkers more efficiently, without directly posing unnecessary burden on patients.</p
Once Nocturia, Always Nocturia? Natural History of Nocturia in Older Men Based on Frequency-Volume Charts:The Krimpen Study
Purpose: Nocturia is a highly prevalent and bothersome symptom that might (spontaneously) resolve. However, longitudinal data are not available on the incidence and resolution of nocturia assessed with frequency-volume charts. In this study we determined the prevalence, incidence and resolution rates of nocturia assessed by frequency-volume charts, and compared nocturnal voiding frequency over time as assessed by frequency-volume charts and questionnaires. Materials and Methods: A longitudinal, population based study was conducted among 1,688 men 50 to 78 years old with followup rounds at 2.1, 4.2 and 6.5 years. Nocturnal voiding frequency was determined with frequency-volume charts and, for comparison purposes, with a question from the International Prostate Symptom Score. Nocturia was defined as nocturnal voiding frequency 2 or greater. Prevalence, incidence and resolution rates were also determined. Results: At the 2.1-year followup the incidence rate was 23.9% and the resolution rate was 36.7%. The incidence rate was highest in the oldest group (70 to 78 years) and lowest in the youngest (50 to 54 years), whereas the resolution rate was highest in the group 55 to 59 years old and lowest in the oldest group. Because of the high resolution rate, no reliable incidence rates can be calculated. Despite fluctuation, the prevalence of nocturia increased with age and over time (from 34.4% to 44.7% for the total group, p <0.05). Men who had a frequency-volume chart-nocturnal voiding frequency less than International Prostate Symptom Score-nocturnal voiding frequency (6% of the population) more often had this later on. Conclusions: In this population frequency-volume chart assessed nocturia shows considerable fluctuation. Nevertheless, prevalence increases over time and with increasing age. Men who once had frequency-volume chart-nocturnal voiding frequency less than International Prostate Symptom Score-nocturnal voiding frequency are more likely to have this again. Therefore, frequency-volume charts as well as the International Prostate Symptom Score should be used when evaluating nocturia
Guillain-Barré syndrome:multifactorial mechanisms versus defined subgroups
The clinical spectrum of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is summarized in relation to antecedent infections and anti-ganglioside antibodies. Associations exist between a pure motor form of GBS, diarrhea, Campylobacter jejuni infection, and anti-GM1 antibodies; between cranial nerve involvement and Miller Fisher syndrome, C. jejuni infection, and anti-GQ1b antibodies; and between variants, such as severe sensory involvement and cytomegalovirus infection. These three clinical variants are suggested to form the extremes of a continuous spectrum; they are discussed in relation to the more pathologically defined patterns of acute motor axonal neuropathy and acute motor-sensory axonal neuropathy. In particular, patients with a clinically pure motor variant of GBS, diarrhea, anti-GM1 antibodies, or C. jejuni infection seem to respond better to early treatment with high-dose immunoglobulins than to plasma exchange.</p
