    Error correction model estimation of the Canada-US real exchange rate

    Using the error correction model, we link the long-run behavior of the Canada-US real exchange rate to its short-run dynamics. The equilibrium real exchange rate is determined by the energy and non-energy commodity prices over the period 1973Q1-1992Q1. However such a single long-run relationship does not hold when the sample period is extended to 2004Q4. This breakdown can be explained by the break point which we find at 1993Q3. At the break point, the effect of the energy price shocks on Canada’s real exchange rate turns from negative to positive while the effect of the non-energy commodity price shocks is constantly positive. We find that after one year 40.03% of the gap between the actual and equilibrium real exchange rate is closed. The Canada-US interest rate differential affects the real exchange rate temporarily. The Canada’s real exchange rate depreciates immediately after a decrease in Canada’s interest rate and appreciates next quarter but not by as much as it has depreciated

    Nerve agents are a group of organophosphorus (OP) compounds that are potent neurotoxins used as chemical warfare agents and insecticides. Current medical countermeasures, including atropine and oxime-based reactivators, target the down-stream pathways inhibited by OP agents and cannot effectively eliminate OP agents. In contrast, organophosphorus hydrolase (OPH) is a bacterial enzyme that can detoxify a wide range of OP agents. The advantage of OPH over oxime-based treatment is rapid hydrolysis of these agents in the circulatory system. Kinetic properties of OPH from various bacteria have been studied by others. Substrate binding affinity ranges between 200 μM and 2.5 mM, well above lethal levels. To improve OPH mutant screening capability, we optimized a cell-free protein synthesis system to express active OPH variants rapidly and conduct kinetic measurements. We also tested the hypothesis that active site mutations using only natural amino acids restrict the development of OPH variants with binding affinities close to nerve agent lethal levels (a few μM). Our work resulted in a suite of OPH variants that incorporated selected unnatural amino acids into OPH, with mutations targeted for the first time to both active and allosteric binding sites. Kinetic studies of those mutants show significantly improved OPH substrate binding affinity

The article studies the legal framework for the development of Chinese-Russian trade and economic relations. The bilateral trade of Russia and China with the introduction of innovative technologies has been considered. The work of Chinese entrepreneurs in Russia has been analyzed. The assessment of the Russian market and its potential by the Chinese has been given. The conclusion of bilateral Sino-Russian agreements, the establishment of joint ventures, as well as the difficulties that Chinese businessmen have to deal with in Russia have been described. The work of Russian entrepreneurs in China has been examined. The opportunities for Russians to do business in China have been shown. The interest of the Chinese government and business circles in Russian investments, bilateral economic and cultural cooperation has been noted. Сhinese regard such good relationships between China and Russia as “honeymoon”. Under “honeymoon”, it is believed that Chinese and Russian entrepreneurs should seize the opportunity, expanding cross-border e-commerce communication, promoting technical exchange, and creating a win-win situation for both Chinese and Russians

    Assessment of Features between Multichannel Electrohysterogram for Differentiation of Labors

    [EN] Electrohysterogram (EHG) is a promising method for noninvasive monitoring of uterine electrical activity. The main purpose of this study was to characterize the multichannel EHG signals to distinguish between term delivery and preterm birth, as well as deliveries within and beyond 24 h. A total of 219 pregnant women were grouped in two ways: (1) term delivery (TD), threatened preterm labor (TPL) with the outcome of preterm birth (TPL_PB), and TPL with the outcome of term delivery (TPL_TD); (2) EHG recording time to delivery (TTD) 24 h. Three bipolar EHG signals were analyzed for the 30 min recording. Six EHG features between multiple channels, including multivariate sample entropy, mutual information, correlation coefficient, coherence, direct partial Granger causality, and direct transfer entropy, were extracted to characterize the coupling and information flow between channels. Significant differences were found for these six features between TPL and TD, and between TTD 24 h. No significant difference was found between TPL_PB and TPL_TD. The results indicated that EHG signals of TD were more regular and synchronized than TPL, and stronger coupling between multichannel EHG signals was exhibited as delivery approaches. In addition, EHG signals propagate downward for the majority of pregnant women regardless of different labors.     Chinese herb medicine in augmented reality

    Augmented reality becomes popular in education gradually, which provides a contextual and adaptive learning experience. Here, we develop a Chinese herb medicine AR platform based the 3dsMax and the Unity that allows users to visualize and interact with the herb model and learn the related information. The users use their mobile camera to scan the 2D herb picture to trigger the presentation of 3D AR model and corresponding text information on the screen in real-time. The system shows good performance and has high accuracy for the identification of herbal medicine after interference test and occlusion test. Users can interact with the herb AR model by rotating, scaling, and viewing transformation, which effectively enhances learners' interest in Chinese herb medicine

    Detection of KRAS mutation using plasma samples in non-small-cell lung cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    BackgroundThe aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of KRAS mutation detection using plasma sample of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).MethodsDatabases of Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were searched for studies detecting KRAS mutation in paired tissue and plasma samples of patients with NSCLC. Data were extracted from each eligible study and analyzed using MetaDiSc and STATA.ResultsAfter database searching and screening of the studies with pre-defined criteria, 43 eligible studies were identified and relevant data were extracted. After pooling the accuracy data from 3341 patients, the pooled sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic odds ratio were 71%, 94%, and 59.28, respectively. Area under curve of summary receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.8883. Subgroup analysis revealed that next-generation sequencing outperformed PCR-based techniques in detecting KRAS mutation using plasma sample of patients with NSCLC, with sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio of 73%, 94%, and 82.60, respectively.ConclusionCompared to paired tumor tissue sample, plasma sample showed overall good performance in detecting KRAS mutation in patients with NSCLC, which could serve as good surrogate when tissue samples are not available

    ZBTB20 Is a Sequence-Specific Transcriptional Repressor of Alpha-Fetoprotein Gene

    Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) represents a classical model system to study developmental gene regulation in mammalian cells. We previously reported that liver ZBTB20 is developmentally regulated and plays a central role in AFP postnatal repression. Here we show that ZBTB20 is a sequence-specific transcriptional repressor of AFP. By ELISA-based DNA-protein binding assay and conventional gel shift assay, we successfully identified a ZBTB20-binding site at -104/-86 of mouse AFP gene, flanked by two HNF1 sites and two C/EBP sites in the proximal promoter. Importantly, mutation of the core sequence in this site fully abolished its binding to ZBTB20 in vitro, as well as the repression of AFP promoter activity by ZBTB20. The unique ZBTB20 site was highly conserved in rat and human AFP genes, but absent in albumin genes. These help to explain the autonomous regulation of albumin and AFP genes in the liver after birth. Furthermore, we demonstrated that transcriptional repression of AFP gene by ZBTB20 was liver-specific. ZBTB20 was dispensable for AFP silencing in other tissues outside liver. Our data define a cognate ZBTB20 site in AFP promoter which mediates the postnatal repression of AFP gene in the liver
