Despite being a global, billion-dollar industry, very little is known about the conditions women face within the pornography industry. The aim of this study was to explore women’s experiences in pornography production, with a particular focus on structural antecedents to entrance, coercion, and violence within the industry, as well as current needs and any barriers to exiting the industry. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with nine women with experiences in pornography production in Sweden. Participants identified young age, financial insecurity, earlier exposure to sexualized violence, and poor mental health as typical antecedents to entering the pornography industry. Once in the industry, women risk manipulation and coercion by pornographers and porn buyers, making it difficult to maintain personal boundaries. Women are regularly harassed by porn buyers who send requests to purchase specific sexualized acts online or offline. The greater a woman’s vulnerability, the more difficult it is to resist pornographer’s and porn buyer’s demands. Experiences in prostitution and other forms of commercial sexualized exploitation are common. A significant barrier to exiting pornography production is the distress of having one’s pornographic images remain online indefinitely. In order to exit the pornography industry and access real alternatives, participants stressed the importance of vocational training, further education and psychosocial support. This study is an important step in elucidating the situation faced by women in pornography production. Further documentation of harms and assessment of needs is warranted for policymaking and the development of effective support services for this vulnerable population

Disturbance Observer: Design and Flight Test of a Large Envelope Flight Controller

A new flight controller was evaluated through piloted simulation and flight test conducted at the USAF Test Pilot School. The controller, commonly called a disturbance observer, uses inertial sensor feedback routed through a simple control architecture that acts to force the desired response while rejecting sensor noise and atmospheric disturbances. The investigation included both handling qualities testing in the Octonian simulator at the Air Force Research Laboratories Air Vehicle Directorate, and initial flight test conducted as part of a Test Management Project at the USAF TPS. Simulation produced positive results with desired performance throughout a wide flight envelope. In addition, the desired response of the aircraft was easily modified by changing variables within the controller. Flight test was conducted on the Variable-stability In-flight Simulator and Test Aircraft (VISTA). Twelve test sorties totaling 16.4 flight hours were conducted and culminated in multiple landings at Edwards AFB, CA. Time delay inherent in the VISTA resulted in the requirement to gain down the control surface command signal. Sensor noise was amplified and caused a control surface ‘buzz.” Flying qualities exhibited lower damping and frequency than ‘desired’ yet were consistent throughout a larger flight envelope. Post flight analysis resulted in the determination of ways to reduce the noise causing the ‘buzz’ and improve the flying qualities by adjusting the controller’s ‘desired dynamics.

This article is part of the monograph entitled 'Pornography: A Sexual Geography of Power'.[Abstract] Pornography has been perceived as existing separate from prostitution and trafficking. We suggest that pornography, prostitution, and trafficking overlap conceptually and empirically. We discuss similarities between pornography and other arms of the sex trade such as escort, street, or massage prostitution via a review of survivor testimony and existing research. Women used in the production of pornography suffer the same adverse antecedents as those in other prostitution including poverty, childhood sexual abuse, racism, domestic violence, and the cultural mainstreaming of sexism. These factors groom and channel women into pornography, with pornographers using the same controlling tactics employed by other pimps. In pornography, women are subject to physical and psychological harms that are the same as those harms in other prostitution. We offer recommendations for holding those who perpetrate sex trade harms - pimps, traffickers, and sex buyers - legally accountable. We conclude that pornography should be legally and conceptually understood as one variant of prostitution and trafficking.[Resumen] Se ha percibido la pornografía como un fenómeno separado de la prostitución y la trata.

Delivering neurotherapeutics to target brain-associated diseases is a major challenge. Therefore, we investigated oral delivery of green fluorescence protein (GFP) or myelin basic protein (MBP) fused with the transmucosal carrier cholera toxin B subunit (CTB), expressed in chloroplasts (bioencapsulated within plant cells) to the brain and retinae of triple transgenic Alzheimer\u27s disease (3×TgAD) mice, across the blood–brain barriers (BBB) and blood–retinal barriers (BRB). Human neuroblastoma cells internalized GFP when incubated with CTB-GFP but not with GFP alone. Oral delivery of CTB-MBP in healthy and 3×TgAD mice shows increased MBP levels in different regions of the brain, crossing intact BBB. Thioflavin S–stained amyloid plaque intensity was reduced up to 60% by CTB-MBP incubation with human AD and 3×TgAD mice brain sections ex vivo. Amyloid loads were reduced in vivo by 70% in hippocampus and cortex brain regions of 3×TgAD mice fed with bioencapsulated CTB-MBP, along with reduction in the ratio of insoluble amyloid ÎČ 42 (AÎČ42) to soluble fractions. CTB-MBP oral delivery reduced AÎČ42 accumulation in retinae and prevented loss of retinal ganglion cells in 3×TgAD mice. Lyophilization of leaves increased CTB-MBP concentration by 17-fold and stabilized it during long-term storage in capsules, facilitating low-cost oral delivery of therapeutic proteins across the BBB and BRB

    Studies in Pulmonary Diffusion.

In the past decade pulmonary function tests have assumed an increasingly important and useful role in the field of diagnostic medicine. Many such tests have been devised, but if we consider the lung as ultimately concerned with the exchange of gas between atmosphere and blood, the measurement which perhaps best estimates this process is the pulmonary diffusing capacity. Although the test was conceived early in the century, in the past few years there has been a sudden spurt in its development. [...

Through Thick and Thin: Identifying Barriers to Bariatric Surgery, Weight Loss Maintenance, and Tailoring Obesity Treatment for the Future

    No full text
More than one-third of the adults in the United States are obese. This complex metabolic disorder is associated with multiple comorbidities and increased all-cause mortality. Bariatric surgery has been shown to be more effective than medical therapy and has been associated with weight loss maintenance and decreased mortality. In spite of these well-established benefits, less than 1% of candidates undergo surgery due to multiple factors, such as patient and physician perceptions and attitudes, patient-physician interaction, lack of resources, and cost burden. Furthermore, even in patients who do undergo bariatric surgery and/or alternate weight loss interventions, long-term weight control is associated with high-risk failure and weight regain. In this review, we highlight some of the current barriers to bariatric surgery and long-term weight loss maintenance and underscore the importance of an individualized multidisciplinary longitudinal strategy for the treatment of obesity
