Toroidal Perturbations of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universes
Explicit expressions are found for the axisymmetric metric perturbations of
the closed, flat and open FRW universes caused by toroidal motions of the
cosmic fluid. The perturbations are decomposed in vector spherical harmonics on
2-spheres, but the radial dependence is left general. Solutions for general
odd-parity -pole perturbations are given for either angular velocities or
angular momenta prescribed. In particular, in case of closed universes the
solutions require a special treatment of the Legendre equation.Comment: 13 page

COMPARISON OF DRUG EFFECTS ON FIXEDâRATIO PERFORMANCE AND CHAIN PERFORMANCE MAINTAINED UNDER A SECONDâORDER FIXEDâRATIO SCHEDULE
In one component of a multiple schedule, pigeons were required to complete the same fourâresponse chain each session by responding sequentially on three identically lighted keys in the presence of four successively presented colors (chain performance). Food presentation occurred after five completions of the chain (i.e., after 20 correct responses). Errors, such as responding on the center or right key when the left was designated correct, produced a brief timeout but did not reset the chain. In the other component, responding on a single key (lighted white) was maintained by food presentation under a fixedâratio 20 schedule. In general, phencyclidine and dâamphetamine produced doseâdependent decreases in the overall response rates in both components. With pentobarbital, overall rate in each component generally increased at intermediate doses and decreased at higher doses. All three drugs produced doseâdependent disruptive effects on chainâperformance accuracy. Phencyclidine and pentobarbital increased percent errors at doses that had little or no rateâdecreasing effects, whereas dâamphetamine generally increased percent errors only at doses that substantially decreased overall rate. At high doses, all three drugs produced greater disruption of chain performance than of fixedratio performance, as indicated by a slower return to control responding, although the effects of dâamphetamine were less selective than those of phencyclidine or pentobarbital. 1985 Society for the Experimental Analysis of Behavio
Graph embedding in SYNCHEM2, an expert system for organic synthesis discovery
AbstractGraph embedding (subgraph isomorphism) is an NP-complete problem of great theoretical and practical importance in the sciences, especially chemistry and computer science. This paper presents positive test results for techniques to speed embedding by modeling graphs with subroutines, precalculating edge tables, turning recursion into iteration, and using search-ordering heuristics. The expert system synchem2 searches for synthesis routes of organic molecules without the online guidance of a user, and this paper examines how embedding information helps to implement the central operations of synchem2: selection, application, and evaluation of chemical reactions. The paper also outlines the architecture of synchem2, analyzes the computational time complexity of embedding and related problems in graph isomorphism and canonical chemical naming, and suggests topics and techniques for further research
Coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) Infecting Cricetid Rodents from Alaska, U.S.A., and Northeastern Siberia, Russia, and Description of a New \u3ci\u3eEimeria\u3c/i\u3e Species from \u3ci\u3eMyodes rutilus\u3c/i\u3e, the Northern Red-Backed Vole
During the summers of 2000, 2001, and 2002, 1,950 fecal samples from 4 families, 10 genera, and 16 species of rodents in Alaska, U.S.A. (N = 1,711), and Siberia, Russia (N = 239) were examined for coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae). The 4 families sampled were Dipodidae (jumping mice), Erethizontidae (New World porcupines), Muridae (mice, rats), and Cricetidae (voles, lemmings). Nineteen oocyst morphotypes were observed, of which 10 were consistent with descriptions of known coccidia species from murid hosts, 8 were similar to oocysts described previously from other genera than those in which they are found here (and are called Eimeria species 1-8), and 1 is described as new. In the Dipodidae, all from Alaska, 0/15 Zapus hudsonius had coccidian oocysts in their feces when examined. In the Erethizontidae, all from Alaska, 0/5 Erethizon dorsatum had oocysts when examined. In the Muridae, all from Russia, 0/5 Apodemus peninsulae had oocysts when examined. In the Cricetidae from Alaska, we found the following infections: 15/72 (21%) Lemmus trimucronatus,/i\u3e (Eimeria spp. 3, 4, 5); 10/29 (34%) Microtus longicaudus (Eimeria saxei, Eimeria wenrichi); 41/88 (47%) Microtus miurus (Eimeria coahiliensis, Eimeria ochrogasteri, Eimeria saxei, Eimeria wenrichi); 278/405 (68%) Microtus oeconomus (E. ochrogasteri, E. saxei, E. wenrichi); 116/159 (73%) Microtus pennsylvanicus (E. saxei, E. wenrichi); 9/52 (17%) Microtus xanthognathus (E. wenrichi); 218/699 (31%) Myodes rutilus (Eimeria cernae, Eimeria gallati, Eimeria marconii, Isospora clethrionomydis, Isospora clethrionomysis, and a new Eimeria species); 34/187 (18%) Synaptomys borealis (Eimeria spp. 6, 7, 8, Eimeria synaptomys). In the Cricetidae from Siberia, we found the following infections: 5/24 (21%) Alticola macrotis (Eimeria spp.1, 2); 0/5 Dicrostonyx torquatus; 1/11 (9%) Lemmus lemmus (Eimeria sp. 3); 30/48 (52%) Mi. oeconomus (E. saxei, E. wenrichi); 5/53 (9%) Myodes rufocanus (E. cernae, E. gallati, I. clethrionomydis, the new Eimeria sp.); 21/85 (25%) Myodes rutilus (E. cernae, E. gallati, E. marconii, the new Eimeria sp.); 0/8 Myopus schisticolor. Oocysts of the new species, found in both My. rutilus (Alaska, Siberia) and My. rufocanus (Siberia), are ellipsoidal with a striated outer wall and measured 30.6 Ă 20.5 (27â33 Ă 19â23) ÎŒm; micropyle and oocyst residuum absent, but a polar granule is present. Sporocysts are ellipsoidal, 14.5 Ă 9.1 (13â16 Ă 8â10) ÎŒm; Stieda body, sub-Stieda body and sporocyst residuum are present
Bio-optical profile data report: Joint Global Ocean Flux Study, Hawaii Ocean Time-Series, HOT-3, R/V Moana Wave, 6-10 January 1989
Time-series measurements of the incident surface downwelling irradiance and vertical profiles of the Bio-optical properties of the ocean have been measured during the third cruise of the Hawaii Ocean Time-Series to the ALOHA site, 22 degrees 56.4 minutes N, 157 degrees 54.6 minutes W, north of the island of Oahu, Hawaii, during the period January 6 to 10, 1989. A summary of these data is presented to permit investigators an overview of the data collected. The data are available in digital form for scientific investigators
