    Nanofriction behavior of cluster-assembled carbon films

    We have characterized the frictional properties of nanostructured (ns) carbon films grown by Supersonic Cluster Beam Deposition (SCBD) via an Atomic Force-Friction Force Microscope (AFM-FFM). The experimental data are discussed on the basis of a modified Amonton's law for friction, stating a linear dependence of friction on load plus an adhesive offset accounting for a finite friction force in the limit of null total applied load. Molecular Dynamics simulations of the interaction of the AFM tip with the nanostructured carbon confirm the validity of the friction model used for this system. Experimental results show that the friction coefficient is not influenced by the nanostructure of the films nor by the relative humidity. On the other hand the adhesion coefficient depends on these parameters.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, RevTex

    Surface-induced crystallization in supercooled tetrahedral liquids

    Freezing is a fundamental physical phenomenon that has been studied over many decades; yet the role played by surfaces in determining nucleation has remained elusive. Here we report direct computational evidence of surface induced nucleation in supercooled systems with a negative slope of their melting line (dP/dT < 0). This unexpected result is related to the density decrease occurring upon crystallization, and to surface tension facilitating the initial nucleus formation. Our findings support the hypothesis of surface induced crystallization of ice in the atmosphere, and provide insight, at the atomistic level, into nucleation mechanisms of widely used semiconductors.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Sensory-Adapted Dental Environment for the Treatment of Patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder

    Purpose: The importance of dental care and oral hygiene is often underestimated in people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Comorbidity with dental anxiety is greater in ASD subjects who also show unusual reactions to sensory stimuli. The aim of our study was to assess the efficacy for a sensory-adapted environment and targeted methods in reducing anxiety and positively influencing cooperation in children with ASD during a dental examination or specific treatments. Material and methods: The sample consisted of 50 Italian children with a diagnosis of ASD (36 males and 14 females; aged 9–10 years) presenting with mild intellectual disability (ID) and verbal language skills. The subjects enrolled in the study had at least two decayed teeth and all were treated in two different dental environments: regular dental environment (RDE) and sensory-adapted dental environment (SADE). Results: 20% of the sample was successfully treated in RDE, while 68% of subjects were successfully treated in SADE. Conclusions: Results suggest that a sensory-adapted environment positively affects the therapeutic dental treatment in patients with ASD and reaffirm that sensory dysregulation in children with ASD is a crucial factor influencing the successful outcome of oral care

    Long Process Incus necrosis in Revision Stapedotomy: Retrospective Clinical Study

    Objectives: We describe our experience with long process incus (LPI) necrosis in revision stapedotomy and discuss the different management methods proposed in the literature to identify surgical techniques that can lead to satisfactory results over time. Methods: Twenty-two stapedotomy revisions, in 21 patients with the necrosis of the long process of the incus, are performed from 1997 to 2017. In cases of erosion or minimal necrosis of LPI, a new prosthesis of the same type or an angled prosthesis was applied higher on the residual incus stump. In cases of partial necrosis of LPI, a Donaldson type ventilation tube reshaped and placed on the residual incus stump to stabilize prosthesis, or glass ionomer bone cement was used. In cases of subtotal necrosis of LPI, a cup piston prosthesis in polycel was applied on incus residual stump. Pre- and postoperative (≥1 year) pure tone audiometry was performed for all cases. Air conduction threshold, bone conduction (BC) threshold, and air-bone gap (ABG) were documented according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Committee of Hearing and Equilibrium guidelines. Results: At 1-year follow-up, postoperative ABG was reduced to ≤10 dB in 13 (59%) cases and ≤20 dB in 19 (86.4%) cases. The mean postoperative ABG significantly decreased in each group. There was no significant change in postoperative BC thresholds, and there were no cases with postoperative SNHL. Conclusion: Excellent functional results can also be achieved in cases of long incus process necrosis. The choice of technique should be considered according to the degree of necrosis. Piston replacement with the same type or angled type prosthesis, in cases of erosion or minimal LPI necrosis, and modified Donaldson type ventilation tube, in cases of partial LPI necrosis, provided excellent hearing results

    Thermal transistor is an efficient heat control device which can act as a heat switch as well as a heat modulator. In this paper, we study systematically one-dimensional and two-dimensional thermal transistors. In particular, we show how to improve significantly the efficiency of the one-dimensional thermal transistor. The study is also extended to the design of two-dimensional thermal transistor by coupling different anharmonic lattices such as the Frenkel-Kontorova and the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices. Analogy between anharmonic lattices and single-walled carbon nanotube is drawn and possible experimental realization with multi-walled nanotube is suggested.Comment: To appear in J. Phys. Soc. Jp

    Proteomic analysis of saliva: a unique tool to distinguish primary Sjogren's syndrome from secondary Sjogren's syndrome and other sicca syndromes

    Introduction: A growing interest has arisen in salivary proteomics as a tool for the identification of biomarkers for primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS). Nonetheless, only a limited number of preclinical validation studies have been performed, limiting the possibility of translating proteomic results into clinical practice. The primary aim of this study was to refine the diagnostic power of a panel of candidate salivary biomarkers described in pSS with respect to both healthy volunteers and pathological controls. We also explored the pathogenetic function of the detected putative biomarkers both in the local exocrinopathy and in the systemic inflammatory processes of SS. Methods: One hundred and eighty patients were included in the study overall. In the first "exploratory phase", we enrolled 40 females with pSS, 40 sex-and age-matched healthy volunteers, 10 patients with sicca non-SS and 15 secondary SS (sSS) patients. The testing cohort of the second "challenge phase" of the study was represented by 75 unselected, consecutive subjects: 19 pSS, 21 healthy volunteers, 10 sicca non-SS and 25 sSS patients. Salivary proteomic analysis was performed combining two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Western blot (WB) analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were employed to validate 2DE results. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) Knowledge base was adopted to associate candidate biomarkers in a signalling pathogenetic network. Results: A total of 28, 6, 7 and 12 protein spots were found to be significantly different in pSS samples with respect to healthy volunteers, non-SS sicca syndrome, SSc-sSS and rheumatoid arthritis-sSS, leading to the identification of 15 differently expressed proteins. Among them, alpha-amylases precursor, carbonic anhydrase VI, beta-2 microglobulin, glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH), epidermal fatty acid binding protein (E-FABP) and immunoglobulin k light chain (IGK-light chain) apparently showed the most significant differences in pSS when compared to healthy volunteers and non-SS pathological controls. On the other hand, as expected, pSS and sSS salivary profiles shared a great number of similarities. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that salivary fluid might represent a novel ideal milieu for the detection of a diagnostic panel of candidate biomarkers for pSS, and to gain an insight into the pathogenetic processes underlying glandular and systemic autoimmune disorders

    Germoplasma de manga no Brasil.

    O Brasil ocupa atualmente o nono lugar entre os maiores produtores mundiais de manga, com 456 mil toneladas de frutos, o que corresponde a cerca de 2% do total da produção mundial (FAO, 1999). Esta produção, advem em grande parte, de plantios extensivos não comerciais, com elevadas perdas pós-colheita, que atende primordialmente a demanda interna, considerando um consumo per capita de 2,4 kg. A área colhida de manga no Brasil é de 63,5 mil ha, sendo que a maior concentração está na região Nordeste, com 45%, vindo logo a seguir a região Sudeste, com 41%. Porém, os maiores produtores, em ordem decrescente, são os estados de São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Bahia e Ceará.     Rhanteriol, a New Rhanterium suaveolens Desf. Lignan with Pharmacological Potential as an Inhibitor of Enzymes Involved in Neurodegeneration and Type 2 Diabetes

    Several specialized plant metabolites are reported to be enzyme inhibitors. In this investigation, the phytochemical composition and the biological activity of Rhanterium suaveolens Desf. were studied. One new lignan (rhanteriol 1) and seven known secondary metabolites were isolated from the aerial parts of R. suaveolens by using different chromatographic procedures. The biological properties of the R. suaveolens extracts and the new compound were evaluated by measuring their ability to inhibit the cholinesterase and carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzymes, using cell-free in vitro methods. The new lignan, rhanteriol, was shown to inhibit alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase (IC50 = 46.42 +/- 3.25 mu M and 26.76 +/- 3.29 mu M, respectively), as well as butyrylcholinesterase (IC50 = 10.41 +/- 0.03 mu M), with an effect comparable to that of the respective standards, acarbose and galantamine. Furthermore, docking studies were performed suggesting the interaction mode of rhanteriol with the active sites of the investigated enzymes. The obtained data demonstrated that the aerial part of R. suaveolens could represent a source of active molecules, such as rhanteriol, usable in the development of treatments for preventing or treating type 2 diabetes mellitus and neurodegeneration
