Usefulness and reliability of online assessments: a Business Faculty's experience
The usefulness and reliability of online assessment results relate to the clarity, specificity and articulation of assessment purposes, goals and criteria. Cheating and plagiarism are two frequent and controversial issues that arise and there is a view that the online assessments mode inherently lends itself to both these practices. However, reconceptualising practice and redeveloping techniques can pave the way for an authentic assessment approach which minimizes student academic dishonesty. This article describes research which investigated online assessments practice in a business faculty at an Australian university and proposes what might constitute good, sustainable practice and design in university online assessment practices
Making the Most of Post-Tenure Review
Governing boards have the unenviable duty of trying to oversee in a responsible and responsive way a complex and long-enduring social institution whose arcane workings few board members, administrators, or faculty ever fully comprehend. Enduring social institutions of any kind are, of course, like great leviathans borne by currents and instincts in ways and directions they need not understand in their continuing pursuit of sustenance and self-preservation. However, if one is to effect any meaningful change in the values and conduct of the leviathan, one must take into account the environmental dynamics and motivational stimuli that determine the thing’s behavior. Otherwise, the internal bureaucracy takes over, tucking well-intended mandates into already existing routines, rendering compliance necessarily efficient but also largely perfunctory
Cystic Calculi in a 12-Year-Old Bitch
On Nov. 3, 1957, a 12-year old, spayed, Toy Collie bitch was admitted to the Stange Memorial Clinic. A history of frequent urination, which produced only a few drops of urine, was given. Also, the dog was mildly depressed and anorexic but showed no vomition. Upon abdominal palpation the urinary bladder was found to be greatly distended; firm objects could be felt that produced a gritting sensation when they moved against each other. A diagnosis of cystic calculi was made
Battery in Medical Torts
The purpose of this paper is not so much to explore when and under what circumstances a battery takes place but to deal with the problems which the classification itself creates. These include questions of the applicability of special malpractice statutes of limitation, whether an action can be maintained under the Federal Tort Claims Act, coverage under malpractice insurance policies, causation and damages, and the requirement of expert medical testimony to provide a standard against which the conduct of the defendant may be measured
