Checking the internal pedagogical consistency of a game learning situation: the Leclercq’s triple consistency triangle

Leclercq’s triangle is a conceptual tool used for securing the pedagogical validity of learning situations. It materializes the sound pedagogy principle which commands to establish a triple consistency between objectives, methods and evaluation in any given learning situation. The ELEKTRA adventure game provides a practical illustration of its relevance.Peer reviewe

Spin Needlets for Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization Data Analysis

Scalar wavelets have been used extensively in the analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature maps. Spin needlets are a new form of (spin) wavelets which were introduced in the mathematical literature by Geller and Marinucci (2008) as a tool for the analysis of spin random fields. Here we adopt the spin needlet approach for the analysis of CMB polarization measurements. The outcome of experiments measuring the polarization of the CMB are maps of the Stokes Q and U parameters which are spin 2 quantities. Here we discuss how to transform these spin 2 maps into spin 2 needlet coefficients and outline briefly how these coefficients can be used in the analysis of CMB polarization data. We review the most important properties of spin needlets, such as localization in pixel and harmonic space and asymptotic uncorrelation. We discuss several statistical applications, including the relation of angular power spectra to the needlet coefficients, testing for non-Gaussianity on polarization data, and reconstruction of the E and B scalar maps.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. An accurate equation of state for the one component plasma in the low coupling regime

An accurate equation of state of the one component plasma is obtained in the low coupling regime 0≤Γ≤10 \leq \Gamma \leq 1. The accuracy results from a smooth combination of the well-known hypernetted chain integral equation, Monte Carlo simulations and asymptotic analytical expressions of the excess internal energy uu. In particular, special attention has been brought to describe and take advantage of finite size effects on Monte Carlo results to get the thermodynamic limit of uu. This combined approach reproduces very accurately the different plasma correlation regimes encountered in this range of values of Γ\Gamma. This paper extends to low Γ\Gamma's an earlier Monte Carlo simulation study devoted to strongly coupled systems for 1≤Γ≤1901 \leq \Gamma \leq 190 ({J.-M. Caillol}, {J. Chem. Phys.} \textbf{111}, 6538 (1999)). Analytical fits of u(Γ)u(\Gamma) in the range 0≤Γ≤10 \leq \Gamma \leq 1 are provided with a precision that we claim to be not smaller than p=10−5p= 10^{-5}. HNC equation and exact asymptotic expressions are shown to give reliable results for u(Γ)u(\Gamma) only in narrow Γ\Gamma intervals, i.e. 0≤Γ≲0.50 \leq \Gamma \lesssim 0.5 and 0≤Γ≲0.30 \leq \Gamma \lesssim 0.3 respectively

Many-body Anderson localization in one dimensional systems

We show, using quasi-exact numerical simulations, that Anderson localization of one-dimensional particles in a disordered potential survives in the presence of attractive interaction between particles. The localization length of the composite particle can be computed analytically for weak disorder and is in good agreement with the quasi-exact numerical observations using Time Evolving Block Decimation. Our approach allows for simulation of the entire experiment including the final measurement of all atom positions.Comment: 12pp, 5 fig, version accepted in NJ

Liquid-vapor transition of systems with mean field universality class

We have considered a system where the interaction, v(r) = v_IS(r) + xi^2 v_MF(r), is given as a linear combination of two potentials, each of which being characterized with a well-defined critical behavior: for v_IS(r) we have chosen the potential of the restricted primitive model which is known to belong to the Ising 3D (IS) universality class, while for v_MF(r) we have considered a long-range interaction in the Kac-limit, displaying mean field (MF) behavior. We study the performance of two theoretical approaches and of computer simulations in the critical region for this particular system and give a detailed comparison between theories and simulation of the critical region and the location of the critical point. Both, theory and simulation give evidence that the system belongs to the MF universality class for any positive value of xi and that it shows only non-classical behavior for xi=0. While in this limiting case theoretical approaches are known to fail, we find good agreement for the critical properties between the theoretical approaches and the simulations for xi^2 larger than 0.05.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, 3 table

Time delays in quasi-periodic pulsations observed during the X2.2 solar flare on 2011 February 15

We report observations of quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) during the X2.2 flare of 2011 February 15, observed simultaneously in several wavebands. We focus on fluctuations on time scale 1-30 s and find different time lags between different wavebands. During the impulsive phase, the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) channels in the range 25-100 keV lead all the other channels. They are followed by the Nobeyama RadioPolarimeters at 9 and 17 GHz and the Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) channels of the Euv SpectroPhotometer (ESP) onboard the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO). The Zirconium and Aluminum filter channels of the Large Yield Radiometer (LYRA) onboard the Project for On-Board Autonomy (PROBA2) satellite and the SXR channel of ESP follow. The largest lags occur in observations from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), where the channel at 1-8 {\AA} leads the 0.5-4 {\AA} channel by several seconds. The time lags between the first and last channels is up to 9 s. We identified at least two distinct time intervals during the flare impulsive phase, during which the QPPs were associated with two different sources in the Nobeyama RadioHeliograph at 17 GHz. The radio as well as the hard X-ray channels showed different lags during these two intervals. To our knowledge, this is the first time that time lags are reported between EUV and SXR fluctuations on these time scales. We discuss possible emission mechanisms and interpretations, including flare electron trapping

Candida auris: epidemiological situation, laboratory capacity and preparedness in European Union and European Economic Area countries, 2013 to 2017

    Get PDF
During 2013–2017, 620 cases of Candida auris were reported in the European Union/European Economic Area – 466 (75.2%) colonisations, 110 (17.7%) bloodstream infections, 40 (6.5%) other infections and four cases (0.6%) of unknown colonisation/infection status – the majority from four large outbreaks. Survey results showed that several countries lacked laboratory capacity and/or information on the occurrence of cases at national level. To prevent further spread, adequate laboratory capacity and infection control preparedness is required in Europe.</jats:p

    Quantum measurements without macroscopic superpositions

We study a class of quantum measurement models. A microscopic object is entangled with a macroscopic pointer such that each eigenvalue of the measured object observable is tied up with a specific pointer deflection. Different pointer positions mutually decohere under the influence of a bath. Object-pointer entanglement and decoherence of distinct pointer readouts proceed simultaneously. Mixtures of macroscopically distinct object-pointer states may then arise without intervening macroscopic superpositions. Initially, object and apparatus are statistically independent while the latter has pointer and bath correlated according to a metastable local thermal equilibrium. We obtain explicit results for the object-pointer dynamics with temporal coherence decay in general neither exponential nor Gaussian. The decoherence time does not depend on details of the pointer-bath coupling if it is smaller than the bath correlation time, whereas in the opposite Markov regime the decay depends strongly on whether that coupling is Ohmic or super-Ohmic.Comment: 50 pages, 5 figures, changed conten
