Laplacian Distribution and Domination
Let denote the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of a graph in an
interval , and let denote its domination number. We extend the
recent result , and show that isolate-free graphs also
satisfy . In pursuit of better understanding Laplacian
eigenvalue distribution, we find applications for these inequalities. We relate
these spectral parameters with the approximability of , showing that
. However, for -cyclic graphs, . For trees ,
Effect of Agrobacterium rhizogenes infection on in vitro rooting of Vitis vinifera
Agrobacterium rhizogenes is known to induce the proliferation of rapid growing, highly branching roots (hairy roots) in most dicotyledonous plants. We report here the effect of in vitro infection of Vitis vinifera with two A. rhizogenes strains (b-glucuronidase transgenic A4 and wild type LBA), with regard to an increase of root mass. In vitro-grown V. vinifera explants were infected with two A. rhizogenes strains. Both strains induced a significant increase in the number of the developed roots, and of their weight and length. Root number was increased by a factor of 2.9 (strain A4) and 2.7 (strain LBA), length increased 1.9 and 1.6 times (strains A4 and LBA, respectively), while the root weight was more affected by strain A4 (2.8 times increasing) than by LBA strain (1.9 times increasing). The transformation status of the developed roots was assessed by two different methods: PCR detection of rolB gene in LBA strain-derived roots and quantification of â-glucuronidase activity in A4 strain-derived roots.
Asymptotic integral kernel for ensembles of random normal matrices with radial potentials
We use the steepest descents method to study the integral kernel of a family of normal random matrix ensembles with eigenvalue distribution P_{N}(z_{1},...,z_{N}) = Z_{N}^{-1} e^{-NSigma_{i=1}^{N}V_{alpha}(z_{i})} Pi_{1leqi<jleqN}|z_{i}-z_{j}|^{2} where V_{alpha}(z)=|z|^{alpha}, z in C and alpha in ]0,infty[. Asymptotic analysis with error estimates are obtained. A corollary of this expansion is a scaling limit for the n-point function in terms of the integral kernel for the classical Segal--Bargmann space
Analysis of test methods for texture depth evaluation applied in Portugal
Texture is a surface characteristic which has a very wide influence on
pavements functional quality. It is currently assessed by a number of test methods. Road
Administrations face the problems of dealing with data acquired by different methods and, in
addition to that, the repeatability and reproducibility of the results. This paper presents an
analysis of test methods used for texture depth evaluation in Portugal: the volumetric patch
method and two methods based on surface profiles. Hence, three roads with low (dense
asphalt), medium (“open texture asphalt”) and high (porous asphalt) texture depths were
selected, where five profilometers made five runs. Two subsections of 150 m length were also
selected to carry out the volumetric patch test. The texture indicators analysed were: the mean
texture depth, the mean profile depth and the sensor measured texture depth. The average and
the standard deviation were the statistical parameters used for the analysis. The results
obtained for each method are significantly different and a good correlation between the mean
profile depth and the sensor measured texture depth was established
Fetal axillary lymphangioma
Lymphangioma is a rare congenital malformation of the lymphatic system that occur in 1 per 6000 live births. The most common site of lymphangioma is the neck (also named cystic hygroma), accounting for 75% of the cases, and it is strongly related to aneuploidies. Axillary location is very rare and appears not to be associated with chromosomal abnormalities. Tumor growth, fetal anemia secondary to intralesional bleeding, hydrops fetalis and shoulder dystocia are possible obstetric complications of this condition. The prognosis is generally good in the absence of abnormal karyotype, fetal hydrops or extension of the lymphangioma to adjacent tissues. Surgical excision or sclerotherapy are the main treatment choices. The authors present a case of a right fetal axillary lymphangioma and review the literature
Probabilistic Perception Revision in AgentSpeak(L)
Agent programming is mostly a symbolic discipline and, as such, draws little benefits from probabilistic areas as machine learning and graphical models. However, the greatest objective of agent research is the achievement of autonomy in dynamical and complex environments — a goal that implies embracing uncertainty and therefore the entailed representations, algorithms and techniques. This paper proposes an innovative and conflict free two layer approach to agent programming that uses already established methods and tools from both symbolic and probabilistic artificial intelligence. Moreover, this method is illustrated by means of a widely used agent programming example, GOLDMINERS
