Shoreline configuration and shoreline dynamics: A mesoscale analysis
The author has identified the following significant results. Atlantic coast barrier island shorelines are seldom straight, but rather sinuous. These shoreline curvatures range in size from cusps to capes. Significant relationships exist between the orientation of shoreline segments within the larger of these sinuous features and shoreline dynamics, with coefficients ranging up to .9. Orientation of the shoreline segments of Assateague Island (60 km) and the Outer Banks of North Carolina (130 km) was measured from LANDSAT 2 imagery (1:80,000) and high altitude aerial photography (1:120,000). Long term trends in shoreline dynamics were established by mapping shoreline and storm-surge penetration changes
LANDSAT application of remote sensing to shoreline-form analysis
The author has identified the following significant results. Orientation of the shoreline segments of Assateague Island (55 km) was measured from LANDSAT 2 imagery enlarged to 1:250,000 and 1:80,000. Long term trends in shoreline dynamics were established by mapping shoreline and storm-surge penetration changes from historical low altitude aerial photography spanning four decades
On the "Universal" Quantum Area Spectrum
There has been much debate over the form of the quantum area spectrum for a
black hole horizon, with the evenly spaced conception of Bekenstein having
featured prominently in the discourse. In this letter, we refine a very
recently proposed method for calibrating the Bekenstein form of the spectrum.
Our refined treatment predicts, as did its predecessor, a uniform spacing
between adjacent spectral levels of in Planck units; notably, an outcome
that already has a pedigree as a proposed ``universal'' value for this
intrinsically quantum-gravitational measure. Although the two approaches are
somewhat similar in logic and quite agreeable in outcome, we argue that our
version is conceptually more elegant and formally simpler than its precursor.
Moreover, our rendition is able to circumvent a couple of previously unnoticed
technical issues and, as an added bonus, translates to generic theories of
gravity in a very direct manner.Comment: 7 Pages; (v2) now 9 full pages, significant changes to the text and

On Effective Constraints for the Riemann-Lanczos System of Equations
There have been conflicting points of view concerning the Riemann--Lanczos
problem in 3 and 4 dimensions. Using direct differentiation on the defining
partial differential equations, Massa and Pagani (in 4 dimensions) and Edgar
(in dimensions n > 2) have argued that there are effective constraints so that
not all Riemann tensors can have Lanczos potentials; using Cartan's criteria of
integrability of ideals of differential forms Bampi and Caviglia have argued
that there are no such constraints in dimensions n < 5, and that, in these
dimensions, all Riemann tensors can have Lanczos potentials. In this paper we
give a simple direct derivation of a constraint equation, confirm explicitly
that known exact solutions of the Riemann-Lanczos problem satisfy it, and argue
that the Bampi and Caviglia conclusion must therefore be flawed. In support of
this, we refer to the recent work of Dolan and Gerber on the three dimensional
problem; by a method closely related to that of Bampi and Caviglia, they have
found an 'internal identity' which we demonstrate is precisely the three
dimensional version of the effective constraint originally found by Massa and
Pagani, and Edgar.Comment: 9pages, Te
A projective Dirac operator on CP^2 within fuzzy geometry
We propose an ansatz for the commutative canonical spin_c Dirac operator on
CP^2 in a global geometric approach using the right invariant (left action-)
induced vector fields from SU(3). This ansatz is suitable for noncommutative
generalisation within the framework of fuzzy geometry. Along the way we
identify the physical spinors and construct the canonical spin_c bundle in this
formulation. The chirality operator is also given in two equivalent forms.
Finally, using representation theory we obtain the eigenspinors and calculate
the full spectrum. We use an argument from the fuzzy complex projective space
CP^2_F based on the fuzzy analogue of the unprojected spin_c bundle to show
that our commutative projected spin_c bundle has the correct
SU(3)-representation content.Comment: reduced to 27 pages, minor corrections, minor improvements, typos

Duality, the Semi-Circle Law and Quantum Hall Bilayers
There is considerable experimental evidence for the existence in Quantum Hall
systems of an approximate emergent discrete symmetry, . The evidence consists of the robustness of the tests of a suite a
predictions concerning the transitions between the phases of the system as
magnetic fields and temperatures are varied, which follow from the existence of
the symmetry alone. These include the universality of and quantum numbers of
the fixed points which occur in these transitions; selection rules governing
which phases may be related by transitions; and the semi-circular trajectories
in the Ohmic-Hall conductivity plane which are followed during the transitions.
We explore the implications of this symmetry for Quantum Hall systems involving
{\it two} charge-carrying fluids, and so obtain predictions both for bilayer
systems and for single-layer systems for which the Landau levels have a spin
degeneracy. We obtain similarly striking predictions which include the novel
new phases which are seen in these systems, as well as a prediction for
semicircle trajectories which are traversed by specific combinations of the
bilayer conductivities as magnetic fields are varied at low temperatures.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures; discussion of magnetic field dependence modified

High energy X-ray spectra of cygnus XR-1 observed from OSO-8
X-ray spectra of Cygnus XR-1 were measured with the scintillation spectrometer on board the OSO-8 satellite during a period of one and one-half to three weeks in each of the years from 1975 to 1977. Observations were made when the source was both in a high state and in a low state. Typical spectra of the source between 15 and 250 keV are presented. The observed pivoting effect is consistent with two temperature accretion disk models of the X-ray emitting region. No significant break in the spectrum occurred at energies up to 150 keV. The high state as defined in the 3 to 6 keV bandwidth was found to be the higher luminosity state of the X-ray source. One transition from a low to a high state occurred during observations. The time of occurrence of this and other transitions is consistent with the hypothesis that all intensity transitions occur near periastron of the binary system, and that such transitions are caused by changes in the mass transfer rate between the primary and the accretion disk around the secondary
IL-22 promotes the formation of a MUC17 glycocalyx barrier in the postnatal small intestine during weaning
The intestine is under constant exposure to chemicals, antigens, and microorganisms from the external environment. Apical aspects of transporting epithelial cells (enterocytes) form a brush-border membrane (BBM), shaped by packed microvilli coated with a dense glycocalyx. We present evidence showing that the glycocalyx forms an epithelial barrier that prevents exogenous molecules and live bacteria from gaining access to BBM. We use a multi-omics approach to investigate the function and regulation of membrane mucins exposed on the BBM during postnatal development of the mouse small intestine. Muc17 is identified as a major membrane mucin in the glycocalyx that is specifically upregulated by IL-22 as part of an epithelial defense repertoire during weaning. High levels of IL-22 at time of weaning reprogram neonatal postmitotic progenitor enterocytes to differentiate into Muc17-expressing enterocytes, as found in the adult intestine during homeostasis. Our findings propose a role for Muc17 in epithelial barrier function in the small intestine

LANDSAT application of remote sensing to shoreline-form analysis
The author has identified the following significant results. Data for Assateague Island and Ocracoke Island show significantly high correlations between coastal orientation and erosion. However, South Hatteras has low correlations, and North Hatteras has low negative correlations. Because all four areas are essentially in the same mid-Atlantic climatic regime, process/response relationships should be similar. Correlations for the four areas may differ considerably because of inadequate assumptions; the key is the mean orientation of the specific coastline being studied. There appears to be an orientation window surrounding due northeast (135 deg north of south) in which this hypothesis holds
