Complaints about alleged medical malpractice have increased over time in Turkey, as well as other countries around the world. And it is often the subject of debate in health law and medical law

Assessing Propofol Induction of Anesthesia Dose Using Bispectral Index Analysis

    No full text
In this study we sought to determine the propofol requirement and hemodynamic effects as guided by bispectral index (BIS) analysis during induction of anesthesia. Sixty patients were enrolled in this study. Propofol, 2 mg/kg, was given to Group I for induction. Propofol was administered for induction until loss of response to verbal commands and until BIS values were around 50 to Groups II and III. After induction, the smallest BIS value was different in Group I. Decreases in total propofol dose were 36% and 43% in Groups II and III respectively as compared with Group I. The dose of propofol assessed by BIS analysis results in an important reduction of propofol requirement without side effects

The Medicinal Plant of Genus Paronychia and the Karyotype Analysis of Paronychia adalia

The genus Paronychia Miller is placed in the family Caryophyllaceae. It contains approximately 110 species of annual or perennial found all over the world except Southern Africa, Southeast Asia. Genus Paronychia is known as Algerian tea in the world. In our country, the genus commonly known as et yaran, kepek otu and dolama otu is used as medicinal tea because of relieving inflammation between the hands and toes, aphrodisiac, diuretic and blood purifier. Antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of the genus are known. The chromosome number is 2n = 36 in many species of Paronychia. But there are various chromosome numbers as 2n = 10, 14, 16, 18 and 28. In this study, the chromosome number of P. adalia Chaudhri was reported for the first time. The chromosome number and karyotype formula are 2n = 2x = 36 = 34m + 2sm. Total haploid length, centromeric index and karyotype asymmetry were calculated with detailed chromosomal measurements

The Reflections Of Certain Social Factors Concerning Science High School Students Into Their Attitudes Towards Physics Course

This research aims at studying science high school students' attitudes towards physics course in terms of a) their family income levels, b) the amount of money allocated to their education, c) the unit/institution providing them with the money required for their education, d) the place where they receive education, and e) the location where their family reside. The current research was conducted with the students of Ankara Science High School, and 339 students were reached. An attitudes scale of 34 items was employed so as to obtain the data required. The alpha reliability for the scale of attitudes towards physics course was found to be 0.96. The t test was used in the comparison of pairs whereas one directional variance analysis and scheffe test was used in comparing groups larger than pairs in data analyses. In consequence, the statistical data demonstrated that science high school students' attitudes towards physics course did not differ on the basis of a) the amount of money allocated to their education, b) the unit/institution providing them with the money required for their education, c) the place where they received education, and d) the location where their family resided. c-erbB-2 gene amplification in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

    No full text
Amplification of the c-erbB-2 gene has been associated with poor prognosis in different types of cancer. However, there are no data an the c-erbB-2 expression levels in nasopharyngeal cancer. In this study, amplification of the gene has been investigated in the tumor tissue of patients with nasopharyngeal cancer by competitive polymerase chain reaction c-ErbB-2 amplification was observed in 43.3% of the patients. The increase in the gene copy number correlated with the T stage. No correlation was found with lymph node involvement, histologic grade, differentiation, presence of metastases, or age and sex. We conclude that c-erbB-2 amplification may contribute to the pathogenesis of nasopharyngeal cancer. Our report is the first study investigating the expression of the c-erbB-2 gene in nasopharyngeal cancer at the DNA level

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of modified De Gramont (mDG) and FOLFOX4 (mFOLFOX4) regimens in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). Methods: Patients that received adjuvant chemotherapy (CT) for the treatment of LARC (stage II and III) were retrospectively evaluated. Results: A total of 231 patients were examined. Median age was 58 (range, 18-83) and, of these patients, 36 (15.6%) had stage II and 195 (84.4%) had stage III disease. While the patients with stage II disease received only mDG regimen (36, 100.0%), of the patients with stage III disease, 71 (36.5%) received mDG and 124 (63.5%) received mFOLFOX4 regimen. Patients with stage III disease showed recurrences more often, but this difference was not statistically significant. Similarly, for the patients with stage III disease, there was no statistically significant relation between the adjuvant CT regimen received and the rate of recurrence. In patients with stage II disease, who received mDG, median DFS was 101 months and median OS was 106 months. For the patients with stage III disease, the patients that received mDG showed a median DFS of 78 months and a median OS of 96 months, while the patients that received mFOLFOX4 had a median DFS of 51 months and a median OS of 78 months. Although, for the patients with stage III disease, there are major differences between the two different regimens of CT in terms of DFS and OS, this difference was not statistically significant. When the results were evaluated from the perspective of toxicity, the patients that received mFOLFOX4 showed more toxicity. Neurotoxicity, which was seen in the patients that were given mFOLFOX4, was the most prominent toxicity. Conclusions: mDG and mFOLFOX4 regimens are applicable regimens as adjuvant CT for the treatment of LARC

Clinical and Electrocardiography Changes in Patients Treated with Capecitabine

    No full text
Background: We aimed to identify the incidence of cardiac events with capecitabine treatment. Methods: The study included 52 patients (median age 59 years) with cancer treated at our Medical Oncology Clinic between 2009 and 2010. Cardiac events from capecitabine treatment were classified into 4 groups: cardiac symptoms, physical signs, electrocardiography (ECG) findings, and severe adverse cardiac effects. Results: The patients received either single-agent capecitabine or a combination chemotherapy including capecitabine. After initiation of capecitabine, 18 patients (34.6%) had new onset cardiovascular symptoms, 6 (11.5%) had new onset physical signs and 17 (32.6%) had new onset ECG findings. New onset ECG findings included prolonged corrected QT interval (n = 10, 19.2%) and prolonged PR interval (n = 3, 5.8%). Severe adverse capecitabine-induced cardiac side effects were observed in 5.8% of the patients, but none of the patients had myocardial infarction or died. Conclusion: Cardiac events are not rare during capecitebine treatment and patients should be followed closely to avoid cardiac morbidity and mortality. Copyright (C) 2011 S. Karger AG, Base
