    Ferromagnetically coupled dimers on the distorted Shastry-Sutherland lattice: Application to (CuCl)LaNb2O7

    A recent study [Tassel {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 167205 (2010)] has proposed a remarkable spin model for (CuCl)LaNb2O7, in which dimers are ferromagnetically coupled to each other on the distorted Shastry-Sutherland lattice. In this model, the intra-dimer exchange coupling J>0 is antiferromagnetic, while the inter-dimer exchange couplings are ferromagnetic and take different values, J_x,J_y<0, in the two bond directions. Anticipating that the highly frustrated character of this model may lead to a wide range of behaviors in (CuCl)LaNb2O7 and related compounds, we theoretically investigate the ground state phase diagram of this model in detail using the following three approaches: a strong-coupling expansion for small J_x and J_y, exact diagonalization for finite clusters, and a Schwinger boson mean field theory. When |J_x|, |J_y| <~ J, the system stays in a dimer singlet phase with a finite spin gap. This state is adiabatically connected to the decoupled-dimer limit J_x=J_y=0. We show that the magnetization process of this phase depends crucially on the spatial anisotropy of the inter-dimer couplings. The magnetization shows a jump or a smooth increase for weak and strong anisotropy, respectively, after the spin gap closes at a certain magnetic field. When |J_x| or |J_y| >~ J, quantum phase transitions to various magnetically ordered phases (ferromagnetic, collinear stripe, and spiral) occur. The Schwinger boson analysis demonstrates that quantum fluctuations split the classical degeneracy of different spiral ground states. Implications for (CuCl)LaNb2O7 and related compounds are discussed in light of our theoretical results and existing experimental data.Comment: 21 pages, 20 figure

    Shuttle Ku-band and S-band communications implementation study

    Various aspects of the shuttle orbiter S-band network communication system, the S-band payload communication system, and the Ku-band communication system are considered. A method is proposed for obtaining more accurate S-band antenna patterns of the actual shuttle orbiter vehicle during flight because the preliminary antenna patterns using mock-ups are not realistic that they do not include the effects of additional appendages such as wings and tail structures. The Ku-band communication system is discussed especially the TDRS antenna pointing accuracy with respect to the orbiter and the modifications required and resulting performance characteristics of the convolutionally encoded high data rate return link to maintain bit synchronizer lock on the ground. The TDRS user constraints on data bit clock jitter and data asymmetry on unbalanced QPSK with noisy phase references are included. The S-band payload communication system study is outlined including the advantages and experimental results of a peak regulator design built and evaluated by Axiomatrix for the bent-pipe link versus the existing RMS-type regulator. The nominal sweep rate for the deep-space transponder of 250 Hz/s, and effects of phase noise on the performance of a communication system are analyzed

    Forced dynamic control of non-minimum-phase plants via study of the classical inverted pendulum

    The general problem of controlling a non-minimum-phase plant is tackled via study of the classical inverted pendulum (IP). A full nonlinear model of the IP is used for simulation and a linearised version is used for the controller design. The trolley position is controlled while keeping the pendulum inverted by use of an input/output feedback linearisation method called Forced Dynamic Control (FDC). This is generally more straightforward to apply than conventional techniques such as linear state feedback with pole assignment but in its basic form yields right half plane zero cancellation which creates an unstable closed loop mode. This is circumvented in this paper by creating an artificial controlled output that is a weighted sum of the state variables such that the right half plane zeros do not exist in the transfer function. Furthermore a non-oscillatory response with a specified settling time is achieved with the aid of the Dodds settling time formula (Dodds, 2008). The computational delay introduced to eliminate the algebraic loop in the nonlinear model is shown to have a negligible effect. Simulations are presented that demonstrate the correct operation of the control system and determine differences between the ideal and actual step responses due to the nonlinearities, parametric errors and external disturbances

    Drivers of success in implementing sustainable tourism policies in urban areas

    The existing literature in the field of sustainable tourism highlights a number of barriers that impede the implementation of policies in this area. Yet, not many studies have so far considered the factors that would contribute to putting this concept into practice, and few address the case of urban areas. The concept of sustainability has only received limited attention in urban tourism research, even though large cities are recognised as one of the most important tourist destinations that attract vast numbers of visitors. Adopting a case study approach, this paper discusses a number of drivers of success identified by policy-makers in London to contribute to the implementation of sustainable tourisms policies at the local level, and briefly looks at the relationship between these drivers and the constraints perceived by the respondents to hinder the implementation of such policies in practice. These findings may help policy-makers in other large cities to successfully develop and implement policies towards sustainable development of tourism in their area

    High-speed Civil Transport Aircraft Emissions

    Estimates are given for the emissions from a proposed high speed civil transport (HSCT). This advanced technology supersonic aircraft would fly in the lower stratosphere at a speed of roughly Mach 1.6 to 3.2 (470 to 950 m/sec or 920 to 1850 knots). Because it would fly in the stratosphere at an altitude in the range of 15 to 23 km commensurate with its design speed, its exhaust effluents could perturb the chemical balance in the upper atmosphere. The first step in determining the nature and magnitude of any chemical changes in the atmosphere resulting from these proposed aircraft is to identify and quantify the chemically important species they emit. Relevant earlier work is summarized, dating back to the Climatic Impact Assessment Program of the early 1970s and current propulsion research efforts. Estimates are provided of the chemical composition of an HSCT's exhaust, and these emission indices are presented. Other aircraft emissions that are not due to combustion processes are also summarized; these emissions are found to be much smaller than the exhaust emissions. Future advances in propulsion technology, in experimental measurement techniques, and in understanding upper atmospheric chemistry may affect these estimates of the amounts of trace exhaust species or their relative importance

    Can uptake length in strams be determined by nutrient addition experiments? Results from an interbiome comparison study

    Nutrient uptake length is an important parnmeter tor quantifying nutrient cycling in streams. Although nutrient tracer additions are the preierred method for measuring uptake length under ambient nutrient concentrations, short-term nutrient addition experiments have more irequently been used to estimate uptake length in streams. Theoretical analysis of the relationship between uptake length determined by nutrient addition experiments (Sw\u27) and uptake length determined by tracer additions (Sw)predicted that Sw\u27 should be consistently longer than 5, , and that the overestimate of uptake length by Sw( should be related to the level of nutrient addition above ambient concentrations and the degree of nutrient limitation. To test these predictions, we used data irom an interbiorne study of NH,- uptake length in which 15NH,- tracer and short-term NH,-a ddition experiments were performed in 10 streams using a uniform experimental approach. The experimental results largely contirmed the theoretical predictions: sw\u27 was consistently longer than Sw and Sw\u27:Sw ratios were directly related to the level of NH,- addition and to indicatvrs of N limitation. The experimentally derived Sw\u27:Sw, ratios were used with the theoretical results to infer the N limitation status of each stream. Together, the theoretical and experimental results showed the tracer experiments should be used whenever possible to determine nutrient uptake length in streams. Nutrient addition experiments may be useful for comparing uptake lengths between different streams or cliiferent times in the same stream. however, provided that nutrient additions are kept as low as possible and of similar miagnitude

    Targeting Policy for Obesity Prevention: Identifying the Critical Age for Weight Gain in Women

    The obesity epidemic requires the development of prevention policy targeting individuals most likely to benefit. We used self-reported prepregnancy body weight of all women giving birth in Nova Scotia between 1988 and 2006 to define obesity and evaluated socioeconomic, demographic, and temporal trends in obesity using linear regression. There were 172,373 deliveries in this cohort of 110,743 women. Maternal body weight increased significantly by 0.5 kg per year from 1988, and lower income and rural residence were both associated significantly with increasing obesity. We estimated an additional 82,000 overweight or obese women in Nova Scotia in 2010, compared to the number that would be expected from obesity rates of just two decades ago. The critical age for weight gain was identified as being between 20 and 24 years. This age group is an important transition age between adolescence and adulthood when individuals first begin to accept responsibility for food planning, purchasing, and preparation. Policy and public health interventions must target those most at risk, namely, younger women and the socially deprived, whilst tackling the marketing of low-cost energy-dense foods at the expense of healthier options

    Geometry of River Networks II: Distributions of Component Size and Number

    The structure of a river network may be seen as a discrete set of nested sub-networks built out of individual stream segments. These network components are assigned an integral stream order via a hierarchical and discrete ordering method. Exponential relationships, known as Horton's laws, between stream order and ensemble-averaged quantities pertaining to network components are observed. We extend these observations to incorporate fluctuations and all higher moments by developing functional relationships between distributions. The relationships determined are drawn from a combination of theoretical analysis, analysis of real river networks including the Mississippi, Amazon and Nile, and numerical simulations on a model of directed, random networks. Underlying distributions of stream segment lengths are identified as exponential. Combinations of these distributions form single-humped distributions with exponential tails, the sums of which are in turn shown to give power law distributions of stream lengths. Distributions of basin area and stream segment frequency are also addressed. The calculations identify a single length-scale as a measure of size fluctuations in network components.
