Spin-squared Hamiltonian of next-to-leading order gravitational interaction
The static, i.e., linear momentum independent, part of the next-to-leading
order (NLO) gravitational spin(1)-spin(1) interaction Hamiltonian within the
post-Newtonian (PN) approximation is calculated from a 3-dim. covariant ansatz
for the Hamilton constraint. All coefficients in this ansatz can be uniquely
fixed for black holes. The resulting Hamiltonian fits into the canonical
formalism of Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner (ADM) and is given in their
transverse-traceless (ADMTT) gauge. This completes the recent result for the
momentum dependent part of the NLO spin(1)-spin(1) ADM Hamiltonian for binary
black holes (BBH). Thus, all PN NLO effects up to quadratic order in spin for
BBH are now given in Hamiltonian form in the ADMTT gauge. The equations of
motion resulting from this Hamiltonian are an important step toward more

A pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial of an educational intervention for GPs in the assessment and management of depression
Background. General practitioners (GPs) can be provided with effective training in the skills to manage depression. However, it remains uncertain whether such training achieves health gain for their patients.
Method. The study aimed to measure the health gain from training GPs in skills for the assessment and management of depression. The study design was a cluster randomized controlled trial. GP participants were assessed for recognition of psychological disorders, attitudes to depression, prescribing patterns and experience of psychiatry and communication skills training. They were then randomized to receive training at baseline or the end of the study. Patients selected by GPs were assessed at baseline, 3 and 12 months. The primary outcome was depression status, measured by HAM-D. Secondary outcomes were psychiatric symptoms (GHQ-12) quality of life (SF-36), satisfaction with consultations, and health service use and costs.
Results. Thirty-eight GPs were recruited and 36 (95%) completed the study. They selected 318 patients, of whom 189 (59%) were successfully recruited. At 3 months there were no significant differences between intervention and control patients on HAM-D, GHQ-12 or SF-36. At 12 months there was a positive training effect in two domains of the SF-36, but no differences in HAM-D, GHQ-12 or health care costs. Patients reported trained GPs as somewhat better at listening and understanding but not in the other aspects of satisfaction.
Conclusions. Although training programmes may improve GPs' skills in managing depression, this does not appear to translate into health gain for depressed patients or the health service
On Lorentz invariance and supersymmetry of four particle scattering amplitudes in orbifold sigma model
The supersymmetric orbifold sigma model is expected to describe the
IR limit of the Matrix string theory. In the framework of the model the type
IIA string interaction is governed by a vertex which was recently proposed by
R.Dijkgraaf, E.Verlinde and H.Verlinde. By using this interaction vertex we
derive all four particle scattering amplitudes directly from the orbifold model

Innermost Stable Circular Orbit of a Spinning Particle in Kerr Spacetime
We study stability of a circular orbit of a spinning test particle in a Kerr
spacetime. We find that some of the circular orbits become unstable in the
direction perpendicular to the equatorial plane, although the orbits are still
stable in the radial direction. Then for the large spin case ($S < \sim O(1)),
the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) appears before the minimum of the
effective potential in the equatorial plane disappears. This changes the radius
of ISCO and then the frequency of the last circular orbit.Comment: 25 pages including 8 figure
D-term Inflation and Nonperturbative Kahler Potential of Dilaton
We study the -term inflation scenario with a nonperturbative K\"ahler
potential of the dilaton field. Although the FI term which leads an
inflationary expansion is given by the derivative of the K\"ahler potential
with respect to the dilaton in heterotic string models with anomalous U(1), the
too large magnitude is problematic for a viable -term inflation. In this
paper, we point out that the K\"ahler potential with a nonperturbative term can
reduce the magnitude of FI term to desired values while both the dilaton
stabilization and -term domination in the potential are realized by
nonperturbative superpotential.Comment: 13 pages, latex, 3 figure
FUSE Detection of Galactic OVI Emission in the Halo above the Perseus Arm
Background observations obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic
Explorer (FUSE) toward l=95.4, b=36.1 show OVI 1032,1038 in emission. This
sight line probes a region of stronger-than-average soft X-ray emission in the
direction of high-velocity cloud Complex C above a part of the disk where
Halpha filaments rise into the halo. The OVI intensities, 1600+/-300
ph/s/cm^2/sr (1032A) and 800+/-300 ph/s/cm^2/sr (1038A), are the lowest
detected in emission in the Milky Way to date. A second sight line nearby
(l=99.3, b=43.3) also shows OVI 1032 emission, but with too low a
signal-to-noise ratio to obtain reliable measurements. The measured
intensities, velocities, and FWHMs of the OVI doublet and the CII* line at
1037A are consistent with a model in which the observed emission is produced in
the Galactic halo by hot gas ejected by supernovae in the Perseus arm. An
association of the observed gas with Complex C appears unlikely.Comment: accepted for publication in ApJL, 11 pages including 3 figure
