Nuclear spin coherence in a quantum wire
We have observed millisecond-long coherent evolution of nuclear spins in a
quantum wire at 1.2 K. Local, all-electrical manipulation of nuclear spins is
achieved by dynamic nuclear polarization in the breakdown regime of the Integer
Quantum Hall Effect combined with pulsed Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. The
excitation thresholds for the breakdown are significantly smaller than what
would be expected for our sample and the direction of the nuclear polarization
can be controlled by the voltage bias. As a four-level spin system, the device

Changes in Water Quality of Grand Lake St. Marys Watershed Following Implementation of a Distressed Watershed Rules Package
Grand Lake St. Marys watershed has drawn attention over the past decade as water quality issues resulting from nutrient loading have come to the forefront of public opinion, political concern, and scientific study. The objective of this study was to assess long-term changes in water quality (nutrient and sediment concentrations) following the distressed watershed rules package instituted in 2011. Since that time, a variety of rules (e.g., winter manure ban) and best management practices (cover crops, manure storage or transfers, buffers, etc.) have been implemented. We used a general linear model to assess variation in total suspended solids, particulate phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), nitrate N, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen concentrations from daily Chickasaw Creek (drains ∼25% of watershed) samples spanning 2008 to 2016. Parameters were related to flow (higher values during high flows), timing (lower values during winter months), and the implementation of the distressed watershed rules package (lower values following implementation). Overall, reductions following the distressed designation for all parameters ranged from 5 to 35% during medium and high flow periods (with exception of SRP). Reductions were even more pronounced during winter months covered by the manure ban, where all parameters (including SRP) exhibited decreases at medium and high flows between 20 and 60%. While the reductions seen in this study are significant, concentrations are still highly elevated and continue to be a problem. We are optimistic that this study will serve to inform future management in the region and elsewhere
Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection as Presenting Feature of Vascular Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
A spontaneous coronary artery dissection as the sole presenting feature of vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is an uncommon finding. We present a 33-year-old woman with sudden onset chest pain caused by a spontaneous coronary artery dissection. Genetic testing revealed vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome as the underlying cause. Specifically, we show the value of genetic testing, which in some patients may be the only way of establishing a diagnosis
Therapeutic efficacy of alpha-1 antitrypsin augmentation therapy on the loss of lung tissue: an integrated analysis of 2 randomised clinical trials using computed tomography densitometry
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Two randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have investigated the efficacy of IV alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) augmentation therapy on emphysema progression using CT densitometry.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data from these similar trials, a 2-center Danish-Dutch study (n = 54) and the 3-center EXAcerbations and CT scan as Lung Endpoints (EXACTLE) study (n = 65), were pooled to increase the statistical power. The change in 15<sup>th </sup>percentile of lung density (PD15) measured by CT scan was obtained from both trials. All subjects had 1 CT scan at baseline and at least 1 CT scan after treatment. Densitometric data from 119 patients (AAT [Alfalastin<sup>® </sup>or Prolastin<sup>®</sup>], n = 60; placebo, n = 59) were analysed by a statistical/endpoint analysis method. To adjust for lung volume, volume correction was made by including the change in log-transformed total lung volume as a covariate in the statistical model.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Mean follow-up was approximately 2.5 years. The mean change in lung density from baseline to last CT scan was -4.082 g/L for AAT and -6.379 g/L for placebo with a treatment difference of 2.297 (95% CI, 0.669 to 3.926; p = 0.006). The corresponding annual declines were -1.73 and -2.74 g/L/yr, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The overall results of the combined analysis of 2 separate trials of comparable design, and the only 2 controlled clinical trials completed to date, has confirmed that IV AAT augmentation therapy significantly reduces the decline in lung density and may therefore reduce the future risk of mortality in patients with AAT deficiency-related emphysema.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>The EXACTLE study was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov as 'Antitrypsin (AAT) to Treat Emphysema in AAT-Deficient Patients'; ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00263887.</p
Simplified Multistep Outflow Method to Estimate Unsaturated Hydraulic Functions for Coarse-Textured Soils
Although the multistep outfl ow (MSO) method is well suited for the estimation of soil hydraulic properties by
inverse solution techniques, this method has not been widely adopted because it requires advanced instrumentation
and is time consuming. Th e objective of this study was to develop a modifi ed version of the multistep outfl ow
technique that largely simplifi es laboratory procedures and reduces costs and time. Th e numerical inversion
procedures require applying user-friendly HYDRUS soft ware to estimate fi tting parameters for soil water retention
and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity curves. Whereas values of saturated water content and saturated hydraulic
conductivity must be measured independently, the remaining functional parameters are estimated using an inverse
solution of a transient drainage experiment using multiple suction steps and a hanging water column, with drainage
outfl ows measured during drainage. A comparison test showed that the simplifi ed experiment without tensiometric
measurements provided suffi cient information in the parameter identifi cation compared with a traditional pressure
outfl ow experiment with tensiometric measurements for an Oso Flaco sand and a loamy sand fi eld soil in the
suction range of 0 to 17 kPa
Energy and momentum flux in a high-numerical-aperture beam using the extended Nijboer-Zernike diffraction formalism
We describe the energy and momentum flux in the case of an aberrated optical imaging system with a high numerical aperture (NA). The approach is based on the extended Nijboer-Zernike diffraction theory, that, in its high-NA version, yields an accurate analytic representation of the electromagnetic field vectors in the focal region of imaging systems that suffer from aberrations and/or transmission defects. In an earlier publication, we have derived the electromagnetic energy density from the field vectors. In this paper, we expand our analysis to the energy flow (Poynting vector) and to the quantities related to the linear and angular momentum of the radiation. Several examples of the energy and momentum flow are presented. In particular, we show how the linear and angular momentum distribution in the focal region depend on the initial polarization state and on the parameters describing the wavefront shape of the converging beam. For the angular momentum flow, we show how the separation between spin and orbital momentum is modified when going from the paraxial case to a high-NA focused beam

Validation of OMI Tropospheric NO2 Observations During INTEX-B and Application to Constrain NOx Emissions Over the Eastern United States and Mexico
We compare tropospheric NO2 column measurements from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) aboard the EOS Aura satellite with coincident in situ aircraft measurements on vertical spirals over the southern United States, Mexico, and the Gulf of Mexico during the INTEX-B campaign in March 2006. Good correlation with no significant bias (r2=0.67, slope=0.99±0.17, n=12) is found for the ensemble of comparisons when the aircraft could spiral sufficiently low to sample most of the NO2 column. Urban spirals where large extrapolations were needed below the aircraft floor (1000 ft) showed poorer agreement. We use the OMI observations together with a global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) to estimate emissions of nitrogen oxides over the eastern United States and Mexico in March 2006. Comparison to EPA's National Emissions Inventory 1999 (NEI99) calls for a decrease in power plant emissions and an increase in on-road vehicle emissions relative to that inventory. The rise in vehicular emissions is offsetting the reduction in power plant and industry emissions. These findings are consistent with independent assessments. Our OMI-derived emission estimates for Mexico are higher by a factor of 2.0±0.5 than bottom-up emissions, similar to a comparison between the recently released Mexican NEI99 inventory and the bottom-up showing that the Mexican NEI99 inventory is 1.6–1.8× higher.Earth and Planetary SciencesEngineering and Applied Science
