This study examines the self-regulation processes of reading comprehension in Arabic of Lebanese students in upper elementary who perform poorly only in this language. The focus is on the cognitive and metacognitive strategies these students use, and on the motivational components of self-regulation. A questionnaire and two different semi-structured interviews were administered to fifteen elementary students and to their Arabic teachers, in a French-speaking school in Beirut. Participants do not self-regulate efficiently their Arabic reading comprehension and they tend to seldom use cognitive learning strategies. Self-regulatory processes are predicted by participants’ lack of motivation that manifests itself mostly through perceptions of moderate self-efficacy of performance and low expectations of success. This is the first step towards understanding the learning processes of students poorly performing in Arabic reading. It can provide means that will help students in applying self-regulated content learning of not only texts in Arabic but readings in general.peerReviewe

Constraints in the market chains for export of Sudanese sheep and sheep meat to the Middle East

The objective of this publication is to analyse the causes of declining market share of Sudanese sheep and sheep meat in the Middle East market, especially in the Saudi market, by examining the constraints in the export supply chains. The following major factors are hypothesized to explain constraints limiting export to Saudi Arabia: there are specific export requirements for quality assurance and safety of Sudanese sheep and sheep meat, and there are rules and procedures in place in Sudan to test, certify and assure supply of quality and safe animals and meat to the Saudi importers. However, these are inadequate and inefficient to match the SPS standards of the importing country; multiple intermediaries are involved along the market chains resulting in several points of taxation along the value chains; this leads to increased transaction costs which lower competitiveness; domestic livestock markets are spatially integrated and therefore can respond quickly to varying import demand requirements. A market chain framework linking producers and importers through the intermediate markets and actors was used to analyse these factors. Both secondary and primary survey data were used to generate evidence on these factors

Modulation of mitochondrial dynamics and bioenergetics in Zika Virus infected retinal cells Karim Dirani1, Sneha Singh1, Shailendra Giri2, Ashok Kumar1 1 Department of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences, and Kresge Eye Institute, Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, MI 2 Department of Neurology, Henry Ford Health Systems, Detroit, MI Purpose: In addition to the powerhouse of the cells and regulation of apoptosis, mitochondria are being increasingly recognized in playing crucial role in modulating innate immune response in viral infections. In this study, we sought to determine the impact of mitochondrial dynamic (fission, fusion, and mitophagy) and bioenergetics status in regulating antiviral innate response to Zika virus (ZIKV) infection. Methods: Human ARPE-19 cells were infected with ZIKV (strain PRVABC59) at MOI of 1. The mitochondria were visualized for fission and fusion process using TOM20 and mitotracker dyes while the mitochondrial membrane potential was measured using JC-1 staining. The temporal expression of key genes/molecules involved in mitochondrial dynamic was assessed by RT-qPCR and Western blot. ARPE-19 cells stably expressing individual ZIKV genes were used to assess the functional role of viral proteins in altering mitochondrial dynamics. The bioenergetics activity of the cells was assessed using Seahorse XF analyzer for monitoring oxygen consumption rate (OCR) and Extracellular acidification rate (ECAR) upon ZIKV infection and with individual viral proteins. Results: All cells tested were permissive to ZIKV infection, as evidenced by a time dependent increase in virion production and immunostaining of viral antigen in the cells. Infected cells exhibited an increase in the expression of antiviral (e.g., IFNs, ISG15, MX1, OAS2) and inflammatory mediators (e.g., CCL5, TNFa). Amongst the molecules regulating the mitochondrial fission and fusion, levels of p-Drp1, mitofusins (MFN1, MFN2), and Opa1 were altered at both mRNA and protein levels. Similarly, molecules regulating mitophagy, PINK1/Parkin -dependent and independent pathways were modulated in ZIKV infected cells. Among individual viral proteins, the non-structural proteins exerted profound effects on mitochondrial dynamic. This correlated with a decrease in OCR response upon ZIKV infection. Interestingly, the pharmacological inhibition of Drp1 reduced ZIKV replication. Conclusion: Collectively, our data indicates that ZIKV virus modulates mitochondrial dynamics and individual ZIKV proteins exert differential effects on bioenergetics and antiviral innate immune response of infected cells. Targeting mitochondrial dynamic may provide new therapeutic avenues for antiviral therapy against ZIKV infection

Objectives: This study aimed to show the impact of a multidisciplinary quality improvement project on adherence to antimicrobial prophylaxis guidelines in oncological surgery. Methods: This pre- and post-intervention prospective observational study was carried out at the King Hussein Cancer Centre (KHCC) in Amman, Jordan, between August 2009 and February 2012. The quality improvement project consisted of revising the institutional guidelines for surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis, assigning a clinical pharmacist to the surgical department, establishing an operating room satellite pharmacy and providing education regarding the appropriate utilisation of antibiotics. The medical records of adult cancer patients who underwent surgery were evaluated one month before and one month after the project was implemented to assess adherence to the guidelines with regards to antibiotics prescribed, drug doses and timing and treatment duration. Results: A total of 70 patients were evaluated before and 97 patients were evaluated after the intervention, of which 57 (81.4%) and 95 (97.9%) patients received antibiotics, respectively. In comparing the pre- and post-intervention groups, an improvement was observed in the proportion of patients who received antibiotics at the appropriate time (n = 12 versus n = 79; 21.1% versus 83.2%; P <0.01), for the appropriate duration of time (n = 22 versus n = 94; 38.6% versus 99.0%; P <0.01) and in the appropriate dose (n = 9 versus n = 87; 56.3% versus 98.9%; P <0.01). Conclusion: Adherence to the antimicrobial prophylaxis guidelines at KHCC improved significantly after the implementation of a quality improvement project

The purpose of our study was to investigate the two-year outcome of Aflibercept treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), using the Observe-and-Plan regimen, an individually planned treatment regimen, based on the predictability of an individual's need for retreatment, aiming to reduce the clinical burden. Our prospective study used the Observe-and-Plan regimen with Aflibercept to treat nAMD: Three loading doses, followed by monthly observation visits until the disease-recurrence interval was determined, which then was shortened by 2 weeks in a treatment plan for the next three injections without intermediate monitoring visits. The subsequent treatment plans were adjusted according to periodically assessed disease activity. The primary outcome measures were visual acuity changes, number of injections, and number of monitoring visits. The study included 112 eyes of 102 patients with a mean age of 80.7 years (SD 7.6). Mean visual acuity (VA) improved from 61.8 ETDRS letters (20/60(+2)) at baseline, by 8.5, 8.0, and 6.2 letters at months 3, 12 and 24, respectively. Mean central retinal thickness was 438um at baseline, and reduced by 152um, 155um, and 150um at months 3, 12 and 24, respectively. The mean number of injections was 8.7 and 6.5 in the first and second year, respectively. The mean number of monitoring visits after baseline was 3.8 and 2.8 during the first and second year, respectively. The Observe-and-Plan regimen significantly improved VA, while fewer monitoring visits were needed as compared to other variable dosing regimens, thus reducing the workload for chronic care management of nAMD
