An Efficient Rank Based Approach for Closest String and Closest Substring
This paper aims to present a new genetic approach that uses rank distance for solving two known NP-hard problems, and to compare rank distance with other distance measures for strings. The two NP-hard problems we are trying to solve are closest string and closest substring. For each problem we build a genetic algorithm and we describe the genetic operations involved. Both genetic algorithms use a fitness function based on rank distance. We compare our algorithms with other genetic algorithms that use different distance measures, such as Hamming distance or Levenshtein distance, on real DNA sequences. Our experiments show that the genetic algorithms based on rank distance have the best results
Coulomb oscillations of the Fano-Kondo effect and zero bias anomalies in the double dot meso-transistor
We investigate theoretically the transport properties of the side-coupled
double quantum dots in connection with the experimental study of Sasaki {\it et
al.} Phys.Rev.Lett.{\bf 103}, 266806 (2009). The novelty of the set-up consists
in connecting the Kondo dot directly to the leads, while the side dot provides
an interference path which affects the Kondo correlations. We analyze the
oscillations of the source-drain current due to the periodical Coulomb blockade
of the many-level side-dot at the variation of the gate potential applied on
it. The Fano profile of these oscillations may be controlled by the
temperature, gate potential and interdot coupling. The non-equilibrium
conductance of the double dot system exhibits zero bias anomaly which, besides
the usual enhancement, may show also a suppression (a dip-like aspect) which
occurs around the Fano {\it zero}. In the same region, the weak temperature
dependence of the conductance indicates the suppression of the Kondo effect.
Scaling properties of the non-equilibrium conductance in the Fano-Kondo regime
are discussed. Since the SIAM Kondo temperature is no longer the proper scaling
parameter, we look for an alternative specific to the double-dot. The extended
Anderson model, Keldysh formalism and equation of motion technique are used.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
Effects of genotype and environmental conditions on grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) shoot morphology
Grapevine shoot morphology is widely studied for both ampelography and growing adaptation to environmental stresses. However, few is known concerning the relative contribution and interactions of the genotype and of the growing conditions to the vegetative growth. In this work, seven grapevine cultivars were studied in three geographically distant ampelographic collections to maximize the genotype and environment differences among samples. Phytomers were studied concerning the leaf area and the stem and petiole diameters and lengths. These measurements allowed the calculation of derivative parameters to describe the proportions among elements. Despite most of the studied parameters significantly discriminated both factors (cultivar and growing conditions), it was possible to identify, for each one of them, the most promising parameters based on their relative variance explanation. In fact, a negative correlation was observed between the roles of genotype and environment among the studied parameters. The low interaction effect suggested a stability in the plant behaviors, confirming the possibility to use vegetative descriptions for both cultivar discrimination and growing conditions. Future studies will be performed to develop specific indexes based on the phenotypical variability of shoot morphology described here
40 Gbit/s silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) phase modulator
A 40 Gbit/s electro-optic modulator is demonstrated. The modulator is based on a slotted silicon waveguide filled with an organic material. The silicon organic hybrid (SOH) approach allows combining highly nonlinear electro-optic organic materials with CMOS-compatible silicon photonics technology
Toxicity screening of two prevalent metal organic frameworks for therapeutic use in human lung epithelial cells
Introduction: The flexibility and tunability of metal organic frameworks (MOFs), crystal- line porous materials composed of a network of metal ions coordinated by organic ligands, confer their variety of applications as drug delivery systems or as sensing and imaging agents. However, such properties also add to the difficulty in ensuring their safe implementa- tion when interaction with biological systems is considered.
Methods: In the current study, we used real-time sensorial strategies and cellular-based approaches to allow for fast and effective screening of two MOFs of prevalent use, namely, MIL-160 representative of a hydrophilic and ZIF-8 representative of a hydrophobic frame- work. The two MOFs were synthesized “in house” and exposed to human bronchial epithelial (BEAS-2B) cells, a pertinent toxicological screening model.
Results: Analysis allowed evaluation and differentiation of particle-induced cellular effects as well identification of different degrees and routes of toxicity, all in a high-throughput manner. Our results show the importance of performing screening toxicity assessments before introducing MOFs to biomedical applications.
Discussion: Our proposed screening assays could be extended to a wider variety of cell lines to allow for identification of any deleterious effects of MOFs, with the range of toxic mechanisms to be differentiated based on cell viability, morphology and cell–substrate interactions, respectively.
Conclusion: Our analysis highlights the importance of considering the physicochemical properties of MOFs when recommending a MOF-based therapeutic option or MOFs imple- mentation in biomedical applications
Silicon-organic hybrid electro-optical devices
Organic materials combined with strongly guiding silicon waveguides open the route to highly efficient electro-optical devices. Modulators based on the so-called silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) platform have only recently shown frequency responses up to 100 GHz, high-speed operation beyond 112 Gbit/s with fJ/bit power consumption. In this paper, we review the SOH platform and discuss important devices such as Mach-Zehnder and IQ-modulators based on the linear electro-optic effect. We further show liquid-crystal phase-shifters with a voltage-length product as low as V pi L = 0.06 V.mm and sub-mu W power consumption as required for slow optical switching or tuning optical filters and devices
Climate change impacts on plant phenology: Grapevine (vitis vinifera) bud break in wintertime in southern italy
The effects of global warming on plants are not limited to the exacerbation of summer stresses; they could also induce dormancy dysfunctions. In January 2020, a bud break was observed in an old poly-varietal vineyard. Meteorological data elaboration of the 1951–2020 period confirmed the general climatic warming of the area and highlighted the particular high temperatures of the last winter. Phenological records appeared to be significantly correlated to wood hydration and starch reserve consumption, demonstrating a systemic response of the plant to the warm conditions. The eight cultivars, identified by single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) profiles and ampelographic description, grown in this vineyard showed different behaviors. Among them, the neglected Sprino, Baresana, Bianco Palmento, and Uva Gerusalemme, as well as the interspecific hybrid Seyve Villard 12.375, appeared to be the most interesting. Among the adaptation strategies to climate changes, the cultivar selection should be considered a priority, as it reduces the inputs required for the plant management over the entire life cycle of the vineyard. Hot Mediterranean areas, such as Salento, are a battlefront against the climate change impacts, and, thus, they represent a precious source of biodiversity for viticulture
The effects of tryptophan loading on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity in adults:A remote double blind randomised controlled trial
BackgroundDespite the impact and prevalence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), current treatment options remain limited and there is a drive for alternative approaches, including those building on evidence of a role for tryptophan (TRP) and serotonin (5-HT). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of acute TRP loading on attention and impulsivity in adults with ADHD.Trial design and methods We conducted a remote double blind randomised controlled trial (RCT) using TRP loading to examine the effects of a balanced amino acid load in comparison to low and high TRP loading in individuals with ADHD (medicated, N = 48, and unmedicated, N = 46) and controls (N = 50). Participants were randomised into one of three TRP treatment groups using stratified randomisation considering participant group and gender using a 1:1:1 ratio. Baseline testing of attention and impulsivity using the Test of Variables of Attention Task, Delay Discounting Task, and Iowa Gambling Task was followed by consumption of a protein drink (BAL, LOW, or HIGH TRP) before repeated testing. Results and ConclusionsNo effects of TRP were observed for any of the measures. In the present study, TRP loading did not impact on any measure of attention or impulsivity in those with ADHD or Controls. The findings need to be confirmed in another trial with a larger number of patients that also considers additional measures of dietary protein, plasma TRP and aggression. Synthetic molecular motor activates drug delivery from polymersomes
The design of stimuli-responsive systems in nanomedicine arises from the challenges associated with the unsolved needs of current molecular drug delivery. Here, we present a delivery system with high spatiotemporal control and tunable release profiles. The design is based on the combination of an hydrophobic synthetic molecular rotary motor and a PDMS-b-PMOXA diblock copolymer to create a responsive self-assembled system. The successful incorporation and selective activation by low-power visible light (λ = 430 nm, 6.9 mW) allowed to trigger the delivery of a fluorescent dye with high efficiencies (up to 75%). Moreover, we proved the ability to turn on and off the responsive behavior on demand over sequential cycles. Low concentrations of photoresponsive units (down to 1 mol% of molecular motor) are shown to effectively promote release. Our system was also tested under relevant physiological conditions using a lung cancer cell line and the encapsulation of an Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug. Similar levels of cell viability are observed compared to the free given drug showing the potential of our platform to deliver functional drugs on request with high efficiency. This work provides an important step for the application of synthetic molecular machines in the next generation of smart delivery systems. </p
