Purpose: To study the effects of oxycontin combined with amitriptyline on patients with severe cancer pain and depression. Methods: Patients with severe cancer pain and depression (n = 46) were randomly divided into two groups. The study group was given oxycontin combined with amitriptyline, while the control group received only oxycontin, each over a period of 4 weeks. Analgesic effect and depression relief were evaluated using FPS-R (Faces Pain Scale–Revised) and HAMD17 (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale 17-Item). In addition, the dose of medication and adverse drug reactions were monitored. Results: Pain in patients in the two groups were significantly relieved after treatment (p < 0.01). Symptoms in the study group were significantly improved, when compared with the situation before treatment, while HAMD17 scores significantly decreased (p < 0.01). The mean dosage of oxycontin in the study group in the fourth week after treatment was significantly lower than that of the control group (p < 0.01). There were no obvious differences in adverse reactions between patients in the two groups. Conclusion: Oxycontin combined with amitriptyline effectively controls severe cancer pain, and ameliorates depression and improves the quality of life of patients with advanced cancer. Keywords: Cancer pain, Depression, Oxycodone, Amitriptyline, FPS-R, HAMD17 score

Transcranial alternating current stimulation in the theta band but not in the delta band modulates the comprehension of naturalistic speech in noise

In particular, neural activity in the theta frequency band (4–8 Hz) tracks the onset of syllables which may aid the parsing of a speech stream. Similarly, cortical activity in the delta band (1–4 Hz) entrains to the onset of words in natural speech and has been found to encode both syntactic as well as semantic information. Such neural entrainment to speech rhythms is not merely an epiphenomenon of other neural processes, but plays a functional role in speech processing: modulating the neural entrainment through transcranial alternating current stimulation influences the speech-related neural activity and modulates the comprehension of degraded speech. However, the distinct functional contributions of the delta- and of the theta-band entrainment to the modulation of speech comprehension have not yet been investigated. Here we use transcranial alternating current stimulation with waveforms derived from the speech envelope and filtered in the delta and theta frequency bands to alter cortical entrainment in both bands separately. We find that transcranial alternating current stimulation in the theta band but not in the delta band impacts speech comprehension. Moreover, we find that transcranial alternating current stimulation with the theta-band portion of the speech envelope can improve speech-in-noise comprehension beyond sham stimulation. Our results show a distinct contribution of the theta- but not of the delta-band stimulation to the modulation of speech comprehension. In addition, our findings open up a potential avenue of enhancing the comprehension of speech in noise.Peer reviewe

On the nature of the first transient Z-source XTE J1701-462: its accretion disk structure, neutron star magnetic field strength, and hard tail

Using the data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer satellite, we investigate the spectral evolution along a "Z" track and a "v" track on the hardness-intensity diagrams of the first transient Z source XTE J1701-462. The spectral analyses suggest that the inner disk radius depends on the mass accretion rate, in agreement with the model prediction, R_in \propto ((dM/dt)_disk)^{2/7}, for a radiation pressure dominated accretion disk interacting with the magnetosphere of a neutron star (NS). The changes in the disk mass accretion rate (dM/dt)_disk are responsible for the evolution of the "Z" or "v" track. The radiation pressure thickens the disk considerably, and also produces significant outflows. The NS surface magnetic field strength, derived from the interaction between the magnetosphere and the radiation pressure dominated accretion disk, is ~(1--3)X10^9 G, which is possibly between normal atoll and Z sources. A significant hard tail is detected in the horizontal branches and we discuss several possible origins of the hard tail

Viroid Intercellular Trafficking: RNA Motifs, Cellular Factors and Broad Impacts

Viroids are noncoding RNAs that infect plants. In order to establish systemic infection, these RNAs must traffic from an initially infected host cell into neighboring cells and ultimately throughout a whole plant. Recent studies have identified structural motifs in a viroid that are required for trafficking, enabling further studies on the mechanisms of their function. Some cellular proteins interact with viroids in vivo and may play a role in viroid trafficking, which can now be directly tested by using a virus-induced gene silencing system that functions efficiently in plant species from which these factors were identified. This review discusses these recent advances, unanswered questions and the use of viroid infection as an highly productive model to elucidate mechanisms of RNA trafficking that is of broad biological significance

gl(2∣2)gl(2|2) Current Superalgebra and Non-unitary Conformal Field Theory

Motivated by application of current superalgebras in the study of disordered systems such as the random XY and Dirac models, we investigate gl(2∣2)gl(2|2) current superalgebra at general level kk. We construct its free field representation and corresponding Sugawara energy-momentum tensor in the non-standard basis. Three screen currents of the first kind are also presented.Comment: LaTex file 11 page
