NoVaS Transformations: Flexible Inference for Volatility Forecasting
In this paper we contribute several new results on the NoVaS transformation approach for volatility forecasting introduced by Politis (2003a,b, 2007). In particular: (a) we introduce an alternative target distribution (uniform); (b) we present a new method for volatility forecasting using NoVaS ; (c) we show that the NoVaS methodology is applicable in situations where (global) stationarity fails such as the cases of local stationarity and/or structural breaks; (d) we show how to apply the NoVaS ideas in the case of returns with asymmetric distribution; and finally (e) we discuss the application of NoVaS to the problem of estimating value at risk (VaR). The NoVaS methodology allows for a flexible approach to inference and has immediate applications in the context of short time series and series that exhibit local behavior (e.g. breaks, regime switching etc.) We conduct an extensive simulation study on the predictive ability of the NoVaS approach and find that NoVaS forecasts lead to a much ÔtighterÕ distribution of the forecasting performance measure for all data generating processes. This is especially relevant in the context of volatility predictions for risk management. We further illustrate the use of NoVaS for a number of real datasets and compare the forecasting performance of NoVaS -based volatility forecasts with realized and range-based volatility measures.ARCH, GARCH, local stationarity, structural breaks, VaR, volatility.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURE TO ATRAZINE AND BIRTH DEFECTS: AN ECOLOGICAL STUDY IN KENTUCKY, 2005-2014
Atrazine is one of the most widely used pesticides in the United States. Studies have shown that pesticides, in particular herbicides such as atrazine, may be associated with birth defects. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between potential environmental exposures to atrazine in water systems and prevalence rates of birth defects for the state of Kentucky. An ecological study using the Kentucky Birth Defects Registry Surveillance and the Kentucky Geological Survey databases from 2005 to 2014 was conducted. Poisson regression was used to estimate crude and adjusted rate ratios of the association between agricultural exposure metrics and birth defects. Overall, the results of this study support the majority of previous research reporting some or mixed association between atrazine and birth defects. Counties with high mean atrazine exposure had higher rates of all birth defects and genital birth defects than counties with low mean atrazine exposure. This study examining the association of atrazine and birth defects reported mostly statistically insignificant results. There was no evidence of increasing strength of association when the atrazine exposure was categorized into increasing exposure levels for mean concentration level, samples above the maximum containment level, and acres of corn planted. This research provides important information on how atrazine herbicide concentration in water systems affects birth defects prevalence. These results contribute to the existing literature and expand the understanding of endocrine disruptors 4 in agrichemical exposures and the role they have on birth defects. Based on the findings from this study, future, more in-depth studies can be designed to examine individual measures of risk and exposures for birth defects
HOW DO WE VISUALIZE MOBILE DEVICES’ CONTENT FOR INEXPERIENCED USERS: A TASK FOR DESIGNERS
The purpose of the present study concerns
the examination of a scenario involving the
visualizing of content at mobile devicesplatforms
and their respective applications. The
scenario follows certain design principles that
cater for interaction with inexperienced users
within the interface of mobile devices. The visual
design of an artifact obviously influences the way
in which a user will interact with it. Gestalt laws
and principles form one possible framework for
the collection of helpful design guidelines. Based
on field research, a prototype has been developed
according to these principles. The results of a
evaluation by users on the proposed visualization
of content, are finally discussed

Between Modernism and Postmodernism: Greek Literature for Children and Youth in the Last Decades of the Twentieth Century
Placing Greek literature for children and youth between modernism and
post-modernism during the last decades of the twentieth century, this
article aims to minimize uncertainty about the status of Greek
children's literature as an art form and to highlight its ability to
both incorporate narrative changes and address the needs of contemporary
readers. Following on the heels of European classic authors such as
Michel Tournier and Gianni Rodari, contemporary Greek writers-such as
Eugene Trivizas, Manos Kontoleon, and Christos Boulotis-provide
alternative representations of everyday life, interweaving fantasy and
social awareness. Like several other European texts, Greek metafictional
literature for children and youth is indicative of a subversive tendency
that relies on specific postmodernist techniques, offering readers
multiple perspectives and diverse realities
