The paper is concerned with a new gladiatorial tombstone from Plotinopolis. The paper raises serious doubts on the text of the inscription offered by itsinitial editor (Tsoka 2015); it also pinpoints towards Sharankov’s proposal(Année Épigraphique 2014 [2017] no. 1165, 493) as the only viable solution forthe text of the inscription, citing also unnoticed parallel passages from ancientGreek inscriptions and texts as evidence substantiating the new reading of the stone (see nn. 7-9). The paper expresses also disagreement over Tsoka’s assertion that thewords λοῦδοι and Μάτερνος of the inscription are mere transcriptions into Greek letters of the Latin words ludi, Maternus – and that the name Μάτερνοςimplies Romanisation. It is argued that the Latin-derived name of a gladiator ghting in the Eastern (Greek-speaking) side of the Roman Empire is not a safe marker of Romanisation. This is demonstrated by the epigraphical evidenceattesting to the habit of Greek-speaking gladiators to adopt professionalpseudonyms, many of them (25% of all recorded cases) Latin-derived ones; thepaper argues that the name Μάτερνος is simply a Latin-derived gladiatorialpseudonym. Plutarch’s testimony further substantiates that gladiators could be ethnic Greeks or culture-Greeks (see n. 20). As far as the word λοῦδοι is concerned, the poetic declination of the word in the stone attests to the laststages in the adaptation of a Latin-derived word into a fundamentally Greek linguistic environment. The paper argues that the Latin-derived vocabulary ofthe stone (Μάτερνος, λοῦδοι) should be viewed as a further piece of evidenceattesting to the recognition on the part of the Greek-speakers of the time, that gladiation was a fundamentally Roman cultural institution, a cultural import whose onomastics and terminology could rather remain untranslated

Nodal-antinodal dichotomy from pairing disorder in d-wave superconductors

We study the basic features of the local density of states (LDOS) observed in STM experiments on high-Tc_c d-wave superconductors in the context of a minimal model of a d-wave superconductor which has {\it weakly} modulated off-diagonal disorder. We show that the low and high energy features of the LDOS are consistent with the observed experimental patterns and in particular, the anisotropic local domain features at high energies. At low energies, we obtain not only the scattering peaks predicted by the octet model, but also weak features that should be experimentally accessible. Finally, we show that the emerging features of the LDOS lose their correspondence with the features of the imposed disorder, as its complexity increases spatially

The paper is concerned with the Epigrammatist who (after request of pro-tospatharios Léon) composed the epigramme adorning the East wall of Panagía Scripou church (Orchomenós, 873/874 AD). The epigramme is seen within the framework of Constantinopolitan scholarly circles of the second half of the 9th century: the Magnaura school under Kommetas (Homeric scholar and Homerising epigrammatist), and the circle of Gregorios Magistros, chalcenteric collector of Greek epigrammes. On account of his Homerising poetics, the Scripou Epigrammatist seems to have been con-nected to the Magnaura school, as it also happens with his patron Léon (cf. Prieto-Domínguez, GRBS 53 [2013] 177-182, 187-191)

The expression of tumor suppressor CYLD in specific neoplasias

    Get PDF
The tumor suppressor CYLD is a deubiquitinating enzyme that acts as a negativeregulator of several signaling pathways including NF-kappa-B and MAPK activationpathways, by affecting the function of important mediators. CYLD regulates severalcellular processes such as immune responses, inflammation, cell survival, proliferation and differentiation. The tumor suppressor function of CYLD seems to becell-type specific and it is important to delineate its involvement in the homeostasis ofspecific tissues in order to understand and exploit its role in oncogenesis . In thisreview, we summarize existing data on the expression and alterations of CYLD incertain types of lung and colorectal neoplasias

Bilateral Morgagni Hernia: Primary Repair without a Mesh

    Get PDF
We present a case of bilateral Morgagni hernia in a 68-year-old male with an intermittent history of progressive onset of breath shortness and occasional cardiac arrhythmias. Diagnosis was made by clinical examination and the findings in a plain chest radiograph and was confirmed by computed tomography scan. The patient was operated electively and subjected to a transabdominal approach. A bilateral subcostal incision revealed a large right side anterior diaphragmatic defect with a hernia containing the ascending colon, the majority of the transverse colon and a huge amount of omentum. Also a second smaller defect was found on the left side with no hernia inside. After large bowel and omentum had been taken down to the peritoneal cavity, both defects were primarily closed using interrupted nylon sutures without the use of a mesh. The patient recovered very well, had an uneventful postoperative course and was released on the 5th postoperative day. 15-month follow-up failed to reveal any signs of recurrence
