“If you don’t act, you are not going to get anything”: Professional identity and gender equality in Greek and Cypriot media organisations

    Get PDF
The research here focuses on the relationship between women and media organisations in Greece and Cyprus. Our aim is to study the professional identity of women in the context of media organisations as well as the progress toward gender equality in Greek and Cypriot media organisations compared to the rest of Europe. Greece and, to a greater extent, Cyprus are societies in which the preservation and reproduction of the structure of the family constitutes the primary mechanism for socialization and professional accomplishment, much more than in other countries of central and northern Europe. The reported results are part of a more broadly focused EIGE Report entitled “Advancing gender equality in decision-making in media organizations,” which reviews the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) in Member States. The BPfA, in turn, introduces the first indicators for measuring the progress of gender equality for women in the media. The media sectors both in Greece and Cyprus continue to be male-dominated. Women occupy only a small percentage of decision-making posts in media organisations. Moreover, there is a significant lack of gender-related policies and monitoring mechanisms in the media organisations and the countries themselves

Αυτά τα ευρήματα πρέπει να ληφθούν υπόψιν ώστε να σχεδιαστούν εργασιακές πολιτικές που μειώνουν την ψυχολογική επιβάρυνση των νοσηλευτών που εργάζονται με κυλιόμενο ωράριο.INTRODUCTION Shift work is a typical way nurses work in most developed countries. This way of working has been the focus of many studies on its potential effects on nursing staff’s health. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of shift work on various psychological parameters in a sample of nurses in Greece. METHODOLOGY https://redcap.uoa.gr/surveys/?s=D98JXJDDAT The study involved 217 nurses, of whom 28 were men and 189 women aged 23 to 58 years. The Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) was used to assess sleep quality, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-2) was used to assess anxiety, the Patient Health Questionnaire 2 was used to assess depression and suicidal ideation (PHQ-2, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-2, Resilience Scale) was used to assess resilience, the Olden-burg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) was used to assess burnout. RESULTS The results showed that nurses with shift work showed higher levels of depressed mood, higher levels of anxiety, more difficulties in sleeping, higher levels of burnout and lower levels of resilience than people who did not do work in shifts (p <0.05). The years of service in shift work were not found to be related to any of these parameters (p> 0.05). On the other hand, a positive correlation was found between the number of night shifts a nurse does per week and resilience (p <0.05). The results of multiple linear regression showed that exhaustion, anxiety and insomnia were important positive predictors of depressive symptoms (p< 0.05). Depression, insomnia and exhaustion were significant positive predictors of anxiety (p< 0.05). Exhaustion, anxiety and depression were important positive predictors of insomnia symptoms (p< 0.05). Finally, depression, insomnia and shift work were important positive predictors of burnout (p< 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Nurses who do shift work have a more burdensome psychological profile than nurses who do not do shift. These findings need to be considered in order to design work policies that will reduce the psychological burden on nurses that do shift work

"Generation C" and audio media: a cross-cultural analysis of differences in media consumption in four European countries

Despite common circumspection often attaching to technological determinism, academic paradigms which identify elements of cause and effect between the implementation of technological innovation and changes in patterns of audience consumption of media content, suggest audience behaviour among early adopters of such new technology to be worthy of at least cautious analysis. Within this framework, the present comparative study focuses on four European countries to analyse audio media consumption patterns among young people. The age group of young adults between 18-34 is often located within that psychographic group characterized as ‘Generation C’ because of their higher propensity to include ‘early adopters’ of new communication technologies, and the established medium of radio. This paper aims to contribute to the academic discussion regarding the use of audio media, with emphasis on the radio, by young and heavy media users who are daily using interactive media and networks to communicate, interact, work or entertain themselves. It further situates its conclusions within wider contexts of technological innovation and audience interaction

Digital Civic Sensemaking: Computer-Supported Participatory Sensemaking of Nuanced, Experience-Based Dialogue

Throughout the 21st century, we have seen a steady decline in trust in democracy, and a proliferation of exclusive, deconstructive methods of political participation such as town halls and polarizing social media discourse. However, methods of facilitated small group dialogue and community organizing have fostered trust, understanding, and civic empowerment for generations. Further, with advances in human-computer interaction, machine learning, and computer-supported cooperation in civic technology, the intersection between dialogue, community organizing, and technology for positive and inclusive civic participation is ripe for exploration. We present Real Talk, a hybrid civic technology program in which we aim to design, develop, and implement scalable technological infrastructure and equip communities, organizations, and networks with the processes and technology that allows them to connect, share experiences, collaborate, make meaning, address problems, suggest and advocate decisions in a thriving ecosystem. In this paper, we discuss a foundational system within the program as a key contribution to system sciences: computer-supported participatory sensemaking of nuanced dialogue data. We outline our system and discuss findings, implications, and shortcomings

This diplomatic work studies the role and importance of incentives in the education of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Autism is a developmental disorder which nowadays records continuous and rapid growth and is characterized by a lack of socialism, communication deficits and stereotypical behavior. Motivation plays an important role in the education of both the general and the specific population and teachers have to integrate it into the learning process. In particular, in the autistic population, there is a lack of motivation for learning. For this reason, it is very important to explore the ways in which incentives can be developed and the strategies for promoting children in the autism spectrum with the ultimate aim of involving them in the education process and developing skills necessary for their lives

Affective Facilitation: A Framework for Surfacing Lived Experiences and Harnessing Creativity in Focus Group Research

    No full text
In this article, we introduce the framework of Affective Facilitation to the practice of focus group research. In this context, Affective Facilitation is defined as a framework that helps researchers (1) surface and deeply understand participants’ lived experiences, bearing in mind their individual differences, (2) make space for exploring common ground across their diverse backgrounds, and (3) connect with participants through empathy and compassion using active and reflective listening skills. Conceptually, the framework draws on the theoretical and philosophical strands of phenomenology, existential dialogue, holism, and Gestalt therapy. In practice, it employs graphic facilitation as a technique for fostering group learning and connection while creating a visual memory of the dialogue. We explain the implementation of this actionable framework through a case study of facilitated conversations with parents who share their lived experiences, providing insight into their perceptions, beliefs, and concerns regarding childhood vaccination. This study contributes to a growing body of work on creative, participatory, and arts-based research methods. </jats:p
