    Elliptic and hyperelliptic magnetohydrodynamic equilibria

    The present study is a continuation of a previous one on "hyperelliptic" axisymmetric equilibria started in [Tasso and Throumoulopoulos, Phys. Plasmas 5, 2378 (1998)]. Specifically, some equilibria with incompressible flow nonaligned with the magnetic field and restricted by appropriate side conditions like "isothermal" magnetic surfaces, "isodynamicity" or P + B^2/2 constant on magnetic surfaces are found to be reducible to elliptic integrals. The third class recovers recent equilibria found in [Schief, Phys. Plasmas 10, 2677 (2003)]. In contrast to field aligned flows, all solutions found here have nonzero toroidal magnetic field on and elliptic surfaces near the magnetic axis.Comment: 9 page

    CODEX, a high resolution, super-stable spectrograph to be fed by the E-ELT, the most powerful telescope ever conceived, will for the first time provide the possibility of directly measuring the change of the expansion rate of the Universe with time and much more, from the variability of fundamental constants to the search for other earths. A study for the implementation at the VLT of a precursor of CODEX, dubbed ESPRESSO, is presently carried out by a collaboration including ESO, IAC, INAF, IoA Cambridge and Observatoire de Geneve.     Comparison of inpatient vs. outpatient anterior cervical discectomy and fusion: a retrospective case series

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Spinal surgery is increasingly being done in the outpatient setting. We reviewed our experience with inpatient and outpatient single-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion with plating (ACDF+P).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>All patients undergoing single-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion with plating between August 2005 and May 2007 by two surgeons (RPB or JAF) were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent anterior cervical microdiscectomy, arthrodesis using structural allograft, and titanium plating. A planned change from doing ACDF+P on an inpatient basis to doing ACDF+P on an outpatient basis was instituted at the midpoint of the study. There were no other changes in technique, patient selection, instrumentation, facility, or other factors. All procedures were done in full-service hospitals accommodating outpatient and inpatient care.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>64 patients underwent ACDF+P as inpatients, while 45 underwent ACDF+P as outpatients. When outpatient surgery was planned, 17 patients were treated as inpatients due to medical comorbidities (14), older age (1), and patient preference (2). At a mean follow-up of 62.4 days, 90 patients had an excellent outcome, 19 patients had a good outcome, and no patients had a fair or poor outcome. There was no significant difference in outcome between inpatients and outpatients. There were 4 complications, all occurring in inpatients: a hematoma one week post-operatively requiring drainage, a cerebrospinal fluid leak treated with lumbar drainage, syncope of unknown etiology, and moderate dysphagia.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this series, outpatient ACDF+P was safe and was not associated with a significant difference in outcome compared with inpatient ACDF+P.</p

    BRCA1 Mutation-Specific Responses to 53BP1 Loss-Induced Homologous Recombination and PARP Inhibitor Resistance

    Summary: BRCA1 functions in homologous recombination (HR) both up- and downstream of DNA end resection. However, in cells with 53BP1 gene knockout (KO), BRCA1 is dispensable for the initiation of resection, but whether BRCA1 activity is entirely redundant after end resection is unclear. Here, we found that 53bp1 KO rescued the embryonic viability of a Brca1ΔC/ΔC mouse model that harbors a stop codon in the coiled-coil domain. However, Brca1ΔC/ΔC;53bp1−/− mice were susceptible to tumor formation, lacked Rad51 foci, and were sensitive to PARP inhibitor (PARPi) treatment, indicative of suboptimal HR. Furthermore, BRCA1 mutant cancer cell lines were dependent on truncated BRCA1 proteins that retained the ability to interact with PALB2 for 53BP1 KO induced RAD51 foci and PARPi resistance. Our data suggest that the overall efficiency of 53BP1 loss of function induced HR may be BRCA1 mutation dependent. In the setting of 53BP1 KO, hypomorphic BRCA1 proteins are active downstream of end resection, promoting RAD51 loading and PARPi resistance. : Using a Brca1ΔC mouse model and a panel of BRCA1 mutant cancer cell lines, Nacson et al. show that 53BP1 loss of function induced homologous recombination and PARP inhibitor resistance is suboptimal in the absence of hypomorphic BRCA1 proteins that retain the coiled-coil domain and ability to interact with PALB2. Shaped on the study of extra-solar planet atmospheres, Pop-III stars and fundamental physical constants, HIRES is intended to embed observing modes at high-resolution (up to R=150000) and large spectral range (from the blue limit to the K band) useful for a large suite of science cases that can exclusively be tackled by the E-ELT.
