    Work and Nonwork Support for Employee Development

    We develop a model that enhances our understanding of how different supports for development motivate employees to pursue self-development. After collecting data from 418 employees with different backgrounds and using structural equation modeling and bootstrap analysis, we found that work support and nonwork support for development made unique contributions to employee self-development. The relationship between non-work support for development and employee self- development is mediated by self-efficacy and career motivation. The relationship between work support for development and employee self-development is mediated by career motivation. This research expands the support for development from work environment to a broader social environment and clarifies how both work and nonwork supportive environment is positively related to employee self- development. Finally, we discussed practical implications for personnel selection and career development in organizations

    High-skilled female immigrants: career strategies and experiences

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to uncover career-related issues that high-skilled female immigrants face and their strategies for rebuilding their careers upon migration for a diverse range of reasons including following a spouse, furthering education and self-initiated expatriation. Design/methodology/approach: Using grounded theory to explore this topic, the authors performed 14 in-depth interviews with female immigrants that fit pre-determined inclusion criteria for high-skilled (e.g. educated, gainfully and professionally employed). The study context of immigration is the USA, and the authors performed interviews with high-skilled immigrants from Turkey – an underrepresented nation in the US migrant population. Findings: Content analysis of in-depth interviews revealed five primary theoretical themes that captured the career experiences of these individuals: non-linear career entry, career orientation, strong commitment and will to succeed, socialization patterns at work and support network. Integrating these findings with theories on adult learning, the authors developed an experiential learning model of career reconstruction among high-skilled immigrants. Originality/value: This study contributes to the global mobility literature by developing an experiential learning theory of careers and taking a gendered perspective to the career experiences of high-skilled female immigrants. It answers the questions: what are the individual and situation factors associated with career success among high-skilled female immigrants? and what is the process that high-skilled immigrants go through to rebuild their careers

    Expression of Plakophilins (PKP1, PKP2, and PKP3) in Gastric Cancers

    BACKGROUND: The importance of cell-cell junction proteins (including armadillo proteins) in tumor biology is known, but limited with regard to plakophilins. We explored the relationship between plakophilins (PKP1, PKP2, PKP3) to gastric cancer via immunohistochemical techniques. METHODS: We compared the immunohistochemistry of PKPs in 34 gastric adenocarcinomas and 20 normal gastric tissues. RESULTS: In gastric cancer, PKP1 expression was unchanged but PKP2 and PKP3 were significantly decreased as compared to normal controls. There was no observable clinical association with PKP1 or PKP2 expression; however, low PKP3 level and poor prognosis appeared to correlate with regards to node number and tumor stage. The mean disease-free survival (DFS) was 38 ± 3 months (range: 32 - 44) and mean overall survival (OS) 42 ± 4 months (range: 38 - 50). Decreased PKP2 appeared to negatively impact DFS. CONCLUSION: Decreased PKP2 and PKP3 may be early prognostic markers and loss of PKP3 expression during gastric carcinoma progression may indicate an invasive phenotype

    Karcinom acinusnih stanica rijetka je bolest – to je tumor žlijezda slinovnica niskog stupnja malignosti. Najčešće se nalazi u velikim žlijezdama slinovnicama, gotovo uvijek u parotidnoj žlijezdi, a rijetko u malim žlijezdama slinovnicama. U ovom opisu predstavljamo slučaj muškarca u dobi od 64 godine s perzistentnom dvogodišnjom oteklinom u sluznici donje usnice u ravnini očnjaka. Lezija je bila bezbolna, meke teksture, nalikovala je na mukokelu, bila je veličine 1x1,5 cm te pokrivena sluznicom normalne boje. Kirurški je uklonjena te je histopatološki potvrđen karcinom acinusnih stanica.Acinic cell carcinoma is a rare, low grade malignant tumor of the salivary glands. Most frequently it originates from major salivary glands almost exclusively in parotid gland and rarely from minor salivary glands. In this report we present a case of 64-year-old man with a persistent swelling within the mucosa of the lower lip at the line of the canine tooth for two years. The lesion was painless, soft in texture, mimicked a mucocel and had the dimensions of 1x1.5 cm with an overlying mucosa normal in color. Surgical excision of the lesion is performed and histopathological confirmation revealed acinic cell carcinoma

    A Jurassic oceanic core complex in the high-pressure Monviso ophiolite (western Alps, NW Italy)

    The eclogite-facies Monviso ophiolite in the western Alps displays a complex record of Jurassic rift-drift, subduction zone, and Cenozoic collision tectonics in its evolutionary history. Serpentinized lherzolites intruded by 163 \ub1 2 Ma gabbros are exposed in the footwall of a thick shear zone (Baracun shear zone) and are overlain by basaltic lava flows and synextensional sedimentary rocks in the hanging wall. Mylonitic serpentinites with sheared ophicarbonate veins and talc-and-chlorite schist rocks within the Baracun shear zone represent a rock assemblage that formed from seawater-derived hydrothermal fluids percolating through it during intra-oceanic extensional exhumation. A Lower Cretaceous calc-schist, marble, and quartz-schist metasedimentary assemblage unconformably overlies the footwall and hanging-wall units, representing a postextensional sequence. The Monviso ophiolite, Baracun shear zone, and the associated structures and mineral phases represent core complex formation in an embryonic ocean (i.e., the Ligurian-Piedmont Ocean). The heterogeneous lithostratigraphy and the structural architecture of the Monviso ophiolite documented here are the products of rift-drift processes that were subsequently overprinted by subduction zone tectonics, and they may also be recognized in other (ultra)high-pressure belts worldwid
