Adverse childhood period and abuse experiences may lead to some problems later in life. One of these problems is aggressive behavior, which is thought to be a reflection of the child’s increasing anger (Page, 2004; Olive, 2007).  Based on the fact that negative childhood experiences can lead to aggressive emotions, investigating the relationship between traumatic childhood experiences and female convicts’ aggression expression styles was considered important.Sample of the research consists of 77 females who are homicide convicts selected from correctional institutes in three different cities. Data gathered from the participants were examined by using the Turkish versions of The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and The State-Trait Anger Scale.A positive and meaningful relationship between childhood trauma experiences and trait anger levels of participants was observed. In addition, there was a significant relationship between childhood trauma experiences and domestic violence as well as perceived problematic relationship with family members during childhood. Trait anger and internal anger were also found to be significantly related to perceived problematic relationship with family members during childhood.   Results of the analyses were discussed in detail

Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Review

    Get PDF
Complex trauma is a diagnosis that occurs due to repetitive, long-term and interpersonal traumatic events and its symptoms are different from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although many studies have been conducted on complex trauma for many years, it has not been accepted as a different diagnosis. The 11th Edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), published by the World Health Organization in 2018, includes complex post-traumatic stress disorder, a new diagnosis, besides post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) under the category of “Stress-Related Disorders”. In addition to the three diagnostic criteria of PTSD (re-experiencing, avoidance, and hypervigilance), 3 new symptoms related to self-organization have been added to this new diagnosis, namely emotion dysregulation, problems in interpersonal relationships, and negative self-concept. In this review study, firstly, the differences in the diagnosis of PTSD according to DSM-5 and ICD-11 were examined. Then, the history, definition and differences between complex PTSD disorder and other disorders were examined. Finally, studies on the methods used in the treatment of Complex PTSD were reviewed

Which of us were more affected by the pandemic? The psychiatric impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare professionals in the province where the first quarantine units were established in Turkey

Introduction Psychiatric problems, such as stress and anxiety disorders, are encountered amongst healthcare professionals fighting epidemics. Considering that COVID-19 suddenly became a pandemic and healthcare professionals have not had access to sufficient information, it is a fact that healthcare professionals have been affected on a large scale. Heavy workloads, insufficient equipment and anxiety over families increase this impact. We aimed to investigate the extent to which healthcare professionals have been psychologically affected by COVID-19 and related factors. Methodology Data obtained through questionnaires completed by 348 healthcare professionals working during the COVID-19 pandemic and 350 participants who are in the control group were investigated. The Impact of Event Scale-revised (IES-R) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the Severity Index (ISI) for insomnia were used. Differences regarding gender, occupation, age group, marital status and sub-groups were statistically analysed. Results Of the 348 healthcare professionals, 176 (50.6%) were women and 172 (49.4%) men, while 190 (54.6%) were doctors and 158 (45.4%) nurses. The incidence of PTSD was statistically significantly higher in the healthcare professionals group than in the control group (P < .001). The incidence of PTSD was statistically significantly higher amongst nurses (P = .001), women (P = .002) and those who were married (P = .007). Both PTSD and insomnia were found to be statistically significantly higher amongst those working in the "area of final diagnosis" (P = .016 and P = .002, respectively). Conclusions The determination of the groups most affected amongst professionals working in epidemics is important for the planning of in-service training and psychological support studies. If the fight against pandemics includes health teams with strong psychological grounding, it leads to qualified medical care for patients

At the invitation of the Turkish government, the Representative of the UN Secretary General on Internally Displaced Persons Francis Deng undertook a fact finding mission to Turkey in 2002. Deng summed up his findings and recommendations in a report submitted to the UN Commission on Human Rights. This report, co-published by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and the Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundations (TESEV) provides a comprehensive assessment of the Turkish government's implementation of Deng's recommendations on the basis of empirical data derived from field research conducted in provinces populated with Kurdish displaced. The report concludes that while some progress has been made in the official recognition of the problem of conflict-induced displacement, the adoption of a law to partially compensate the material losses of the displaced, there are significant outstanding issues concerning the right to return, property rights (including the right to restitution or compensation), the social and economic integration of the displaced, and finally the establishment of truth and justice concerning the gross human rights abuses committed by security forces against the Kurdish displaced in the 1990s

Amaç: Gece çalışanlarda sıklıkla görülen uyku uyanıklık döngüsündeki sapma, bir takım psikiyatrik ve fiziksel sorunlara neden olabilmektedir. Çalışmamızda sağlık çalışanlarının uyku kalitelerini, huzursuz bacak sendromu görülme sıklığını araştırmayı ve sosyodemografik özellikleri ile birlikte değerlendirmeyi amaçladık. Yöntem: Çalışmamıza 1 Temmuz -1 Kasım 2015 tarihleri arasında Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi’nde çalışan 198 kişi dahil edildi. Tüm olgulara Huzursuz Bacak Sendromu tanı anketi, Huzursuz Bacak Sendromu şiddet değerlendirme ölçeği ve Pittsburgh Uyku Kalitesi İndeksi uygulandı. Bulgular: Katılımcıların 110’u doktor (%55,8), 66’sı hemşire (%33,5), 21’i yardımcı sağlık personeli (%10,7) idi. Bu bağlamda sağlık personelinin çalışma saatleri düzenlenerek vardiya sürelerinin kısaltılmasına yönelik çalışmalar yapılmalıdırAim: Inconsistency of sleeping and being awake circle is frequently seen in night work and related with physical and psychiatric problems. In our study our aim was to evaluate sleep quality and prevalence of Restless Legs Syndrome and its relationship with sociodemographic features in healthcare workers. Methods: The study was performed at Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital in 1 July-1 November 2015. Totally 198 healthcare workers were included in the study. To all cases, minimal diagnosis criteria of Restless Legs Syndrome, Restless Legs Syndrome-Severity Evaluating Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were applied. Results: One hundred and ten doctors (55.8%), 66 nurses (33.5%) and 21 auxiliary health personnel (10.7%) attended in our study. Totally 57 of them (28.9%) had Restless Legs Syndrome. It was found that Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index points were higher in participants who had restless legs syndrome. There was a negative correlation between Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and age. Sleep quality score was higher in cases on shift-workers. Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between Restless Legs Syndrome and sleep quality disorders. Healthcare workers, who has a sleep disorder, must be asked for Restless Legs Syndrome symptoms. Working with shift system is a major cause of circadian sleep disorder. In this aspect, the working hours of medical staff must be organized and the duration of the shift times must be shortened
