    Role of trimetazidine in carbon tetrachloride induced liver damage in rats

    Background: Hepatotoxicity by chemicals and drugs is a common clinical problem. Presently very few drugs are showing effectiveness in prevention and treatment of hepatic damage. So in this study, we evaluated the role of trimetazidine in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver damage in rats. Objective of current study is to evaluate effects of prophylactic trimetazidine against carbon tetrachloride induced liver damage in rats.Methods: Liver damage was induced in 30 albino rats by CCl4 (0.5 ml/kg, i.p.) once daily for 7 days. Extent of damage was studied by assessing biochemical parameters (SGOT, SGPT, ALP, proteins and bilirubin). These biochemical observations were supplemented by pentobarbitone Sleeping Time and Histological Examination of liver. The effect of co-administration of trimetazidine (doses 5 and 10 mg/kg p. o.) on the above parameters was investigated. Liv.52® was used as Positive Control. Data was analyzed by one way ANOVA, followed by Dunnett's test.Results: Trimetazidine significantly prevented CCl4 induced elevation of serum SGOT, SGPT, ALP and bilirubin (total and direct), and reduction in protein level. Pentobarbitone sleeping time and histological examination of the liver showed consistent results. The results were comparable to that of Liv.52®.Conclusions: Trimetazidine, when administered prophylactically, shows hepatoprotective effect against CCl4 induced liver damage

    Nielsen-Olesen Vortices in Noncommutative Abelian Higgs Model

    We construct Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution in the noncommutative abelian Higgs model. We derive the quantized topological flux of the vortex solution. We find that the flux is integral by explicit computation in the large θ\theta limit as well as in the small θ\theta limit. In the context of a tachyon vortex on the brane-antibrane system we demonstrate that it is this topological charge that gives rise to the RR charge of the resulting BPS D-brane.     A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE IN-VITRO ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF THE ROOTS OF FOUR THOTTEA SPECIES

    Objective: The main objective of the present study was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of the methanol extract of the roots of four Thottea species. Methods: The root extracts of four Thottea species were subjected to antimicrobial assay by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Agar Disc diffusion Assay against various medically important pathogens. Results: It is evident from the study that. Significant antibacterial activity was recorded by Thottea sivarajanii and highest activity was recorded against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus epidermis (64 µg/ml). Out of the four extracts tested for antifungal activity, Thottea barberi and Thottea ponmudiana recorded significant antifungal activity and the highest activity was recorded by T. barberi against Trichophyton rubrumĂ‚ (16µg/ml). Conclusion: Results offer a scientific basis for the traditional use of Thottea species in the treatment of microbial infections, showing that the plant extract has an enormous potential as a prospective alternative drug against microbial pathogens. The present study lays the basis for future studies, to validate the possible use of Thottea species as a candidate in the treatment of microbial infections

    Dyon Spectrum in Generic N=4 Supersymmetric Z_N Orbifolds

    We find the exact spectrum of a class of quarter BPS dyons in a generic N=4 supersymmetric Z_N orbifold of type IIA string theory on K3\times T^2 or T^6. We also find the asymptotic expansion of the statistical entropy to first non-leading order in inverse power of charges and show that it agrees with the entropy of a black hole carrying same set of charges after taking into account the effect of the four derivative Gauss-Bonnet term in the effective action of the theory.Comment: LaTeX file, 39 pages; minor change

    Brane Dynamics in the Randall-Sundrum model, Inflation and Graceful Exit

    We study the averaged action of the Randall-Sundrum model with a time dependent metric ansatz. It can be reformulated in terms of a Brans-Dicke action with time dependent Newton's constant. We show that the physics of early universe, particularly inflation, is governed by the Brans-Dicke theory. The Brans-Dicke scalar, however, quickly settles to its equilibrium value and decouples from the post-inflationary cosmology. The deceleration parameter is negative to start with but changes sign before the Brans-Dicke scalar settles to its equilibrium value. Consequently, the brane metric smoothly exits inflation. We have also studied the slow-roll inflation in our model and investigated the spectra of the density perturbation generated by the radion field and find them consistent with the current observations.Comment: Revised version, Accepted in Class.     Reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated enhanced anti-candidal activity of ZnS-ZnO nanocomposites with low inhibitory concentrations

    Enhanced antifungal activity against the yeast species Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae was displayed by ZnS-ZnO nanocomposites prepared by a simple precipitation technique. The antifungal activity was significantly more in the presence of indoor light than under dark conditions and was a clear confirmation of the inhibitory role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in situ by the photocatalytic nanocomposites. The generation of ROS was further evidenced by flow cytometry results and membrane permeabilisation studies. Time kill assay and growth curve analysis indicated diminished antifungal activity under dark conditions due primarily to Zn2+ efflux in solution. © 2015 The Royal Society of Chemistry

    Theory of noise suppression in {\Lambda}-type quantum memories by means of a cavity

    Quantum memories, capable of storing single photons or other quantum states of light, to be retrieved on-demand, offer a route to large-scale quantum information processing with light. A promising class of memories is based on far-off-resonant Raman absorption in ensembles of Λ\Lambda-type atoms. However at room temperature these systems exhibit unwanted four-wave mixing, which is prohibitive for applications at the single-photon level. Here we show how this noise can be suppressed by placing the storage medium inside a moderate-finesse optical cavity, thereby removing the main roadblock hindering this approach to quantum memory.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures.     Mechanical and tribological characterization nitrided Al-7075/Al2O3 metal matrix composites

    This research is mainly intended to evaluate the effect of nitriding on the wear behaviour of Al2O3 reinforced aluminium-7075 metal matrix composite materials. The composites were prepared by using powder metallurgy process. The amount of Al2O3 in these composites was varied from 3% to 7% (by weight) in steps of 2%. Homogeneously mixed powder by using double cone mixture was compacted using hydraulic press with 60KN of load. The compaction load was optimized to get a equal density as base specimens,then the compacted specimens were sintered at 5400 C which is 80% of melting temperature aluminium base alloy. The sintered materials were nitrided with a temperature of 520°C for 72hrs. Two different set of specimens, namely, nitrided composites and non-nitrided composites specimens were tested for their wear resistance and hardness properties. Pin-on-disc equipment was used for wear testing and microhardness testing machine was used for hardness testing. Elemental X-Ray Diffraction technique (XRD) was used to ensure the diffusion of nitrogen to the surface of composites. After all the standard tests it was observed that the nitrided composites have shown better wear resistance than the non-nitrided composite

    Permaculture to monoculture in shifting cultivation landscape of Mizoram, Northeast India: Are agrobiodiversity and happiness waning?

    The status of agrobiodiversity and perceived well-being of one indigenous community, namely the Mara tribe, was assessed in a pilot study of 150 households sampled at random from two blocks in Saiha district, which lies at the south-western corner of the state of Mizoram. A subsample of 50 households was chosen, based on a set of predefined criteria, for data collection using mix methods approach. The study documented 30 species of plants being cultivated by the respondents. The species comprised ten vegetables, nine fruit plants, seven field crops and four species of spices and condiments and their cultivation was supplemented with five species of domesticated livestock. The plants other than field crops were identified by the respondents as top three choices for the diversification of farming. The growing transition to monoculture is taking its toll on the respondents’ sense of subjective well-being. Most of them (92%) reported a moderate level of well-being or fluctuating levels of well-being: they are struggling now and expect to struggle even more in the future, to continue their way of life. We urge caution in the drive towards modernization lest the change should threaten the well-being of people and the ecological–economic trade-offs of monoculture

    Fluorescent Pseudomonas influence palisade mesophyll development and spatial root development in Phaseolus vulgaris

    Three strains of plant growth promoting fluorescent Pseudomonads (HPR6, RRLJ008 and RRLJ134) were studied for their effect on growth and yield of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) under field conditions. The effect of these strains on nature of root development and leaf palisade tube length were also examined. The strains induced positive response on growth and physiological parameters resulting in higher yield in P. vulgaris. Strain HPR6 produced the most promising results in thickening of leaf palisade layer, spreading of lateral roots and production of root hairs. The increase in specific leaf weight (SLW), net assimilation rate (NAR) and relative growth rate (RGR) by these strains were 68%, 152% and 167%, respectively. The growth and yield parameters were also significantly improved compared to the uninoculated control. Antibiotic resistant mutant strains demonstrated that these bacteria effectively colonized the rhizosphere of French bean. The results suggest that the strains could be developed for field application on a large scale
