    Shatter cones: Diagnostic impact signatures

    Uniquely fractured target rocks known as shatter cones are associated with more than one half the world's 120 or so presently known impact structures. Shatter cones are a form of tensile rock failure in which a positive conical plug separates from a negative outer cup or mold and delicate ornaments radiating from an apex are preserved on surfaces of both portions. Although distinct, shatter cones are sometimes confused with other striated geologic features such as ventifacts, stylolites, cone-in-cone, slickensides, and artificial blast plumes. Complete cones or solitary cones are rare, occurrences are usually as swarms in thoroughly fractured rock. Shatter cones may form in a zone where an expanding shock wave propagating through a target decays to form an elastic wave. Near this transition zone, the expanding primary wave may strike a pebble or other inhomogeneity whose contrasting transmission properties produce a scattered secondary wave. Interference between primary and secondary scattered waves produce conical stress fields with axes perpendicular to the plane of an advancing shock front. This model supports mechanism capable of producing such shatter cone properties as orientation, apical clasts, lithic dependence, and shock pressure zonation. Although formational mechanics are still poorly understood, shatter cones have become the simplest geologic field criterion for recognizing astroblemes (ancient terrestrial impact structures)

    Satellite power system: Concept development and evaluation program. Volume 3: Power transmission and reception. Technical summary and assessment

    Efforts in the DOE/NASA concept development and evaluation program are discussed for the solar power satellite power transmission and reception system. A technical summary is provided together with a summary of system assessment activities. System options and system definition drivers are described. Major system assessment activities were in support of the reference system definition, solid state system studies, critical technology supporting investigations, and various system and subsystem tradeoffs. These activities are described together with reference system updates and alternative concepts for each of the subsystem areas. Conclusions reached as a result of the numerous analytical and experimental evaluations are presented. Remaining issues for a possible follow-on program are identified

    Optimizing passive acoustic sampling of bats in forests

    Passive acoustic methods are increasingly used in biodiversity research and monitoring programs because they are cost-effective and permit the collection of large datasets. However, the accuracy of the results depends on the bioacoustic characteristics of the focal taxa and their habitat use. In particular, this applies to bats which exhibit distinct activity patterns in three-dimensionally structured habitats such as forests. We assessed the performance of 21 acoustic sampling schemes with three temporal sampling patterns and seven sampling designs. Acoustic sampling was performed in 32 forest plots, each containing three microhabitats: forest ground, canopy, and forest gap. We compared bat activity, species richness, and sampling effort using species accumulation curves fitted with the clench equation. In addition, we estimated the sampling costs to undertake the best sampling schemes. We recorded a total of 145,433 echolocation call sequences of 16 bat species. Our results indicated that to generate the best outcome, it was necessary to sample all three microhabitats of a given forest location simultaneously throughout the entire night. Sampling only the forest gaps and the forest ground simultaneously was the second best choice and proved to be a viable alternative when the number of available detectors is limited. When assessing bat species richness at the 1-km(2) scale, the implementation of these sampling schemes at three to four forest locations yielded highest labor cost-benefit ratios but increasing equipment costs. Our study illustrates that multiple passive acoustic sampling schemes require testing based on the target taxa and habitat complexity and should be performed with reference to cost-benefit ratios. Choosing a standardized and replicated sampling scheme is particularly important to optimize the level of precision in inventories, especially when rare or elusive species are expected

    Document Filtering for Long-tail Entities

    Filtering relevant documents with respect to entities is an essential task in the context of knowledge base construction and maintenance. It entails processing a time-ordered stream of documents that might be relevant to an entity in order to select only those that contain vital information. State-of-the-art approaches to document filtering for popular entities are entity-dependent: they rely on and are also trained on the specifics of differentiating features for each specific entity. Moreover, these approaches tend to use so-called extrinsic information such as Wikipedia page views and related entities which is typically only available only for popular head entities. Entity-dependent approaches based on such signals are therefore ill-suited as filtering methods for long-tail entities. In this paper we propose a document filtering method for long-tail entities that is entity-independent and thus also generalizes to unseen or rarely seen entities. It is based on intrinsic features, i.e., features that are derived from the documents in which the entities are mentioned. We propose a set of features that capture informativeness, entity-saliency, and timeliness. In particular, we introduce features based on entity aspect similarities, relation patterns, and temporal expressions and combine these with standard features for document filtering. Experiments following the TREC KBA 2014 setup on a publicly available dataset show that our model is able to improve the filtering performance for long-tail entities over several baselines. Results of applying the model to unseen entities are promising, indicating that the model is able to learn the general characteristics of a vital document.     The EuroHeart Failure Survey programme—a survey on the quality of care among patients with heart failure in Europe Part 2: treatment

    National surveys suggest that treatment of heart failure in daily practice differs from guidelines and is characterized by underuse of recommended medications. Accordingly, the Euro, Heart Failure Survey was conducted to ascertain how patients hospitalized for heart failure are managed in Europe and if national variations occur in the treatment of this condition. Methods The survey screened discharge summaries of 11 304 patients over a 6-week period in 115 hospitals from 24 countries belonging to the ESC to study their medical treatment. Results Diuretics (mainly loop diuretics) were prescribed in 86.9% followed by ACE inhibitors (61.8%), beta-blockers (36.9%), cardiac glycosides (35.7%), nitrates (32.1%), calcium. channel blockers (21.2%) and spironolactone (20.5%). 44.6% of the population used four or more different drugs. Only 17.2% were under the combination of diuretic, ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers. Important local variations were found in the rate of prescription of ACE inhibitors and particularly beta-blockers. Daily dosage of ACE inhibitors and particularly of beta-blockers was on average below the recommended target dose. Modelling-analysis of the prescription of treatments indicated that the aetiology of heart failure, age, co-morbid factors and type of hospital ward influenced the rate of prescription. Age 70 years, in patients with respiratory disease and increased in cardiology wards, in ischaemic heart failure and in mate subjects. Prescription of cardiac glycosides was significantly increased in patients with supraventricular tachycardia/atrial fibrillation. Finally, the rate of prescription of antithrombotic agents was increased in the presence of supraventricular arrhythmia, ischaemic heart disease, mate subjects but was decreased in patients over 70. Conclusion Our results suggest that the prescription of recommended medications including ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers remains limited and that the daily dosage remains tow, particularly for beta-blockers.     Surfacing Times and Dive Rates for Narwhals (Monodon monoceros) and Belugas (Delphinapterus leucas)

    Time spent at and near the sea surface was measured for 25 narwhals, Monodon monoceros, and 39 belugas or white whales, Delphinapterus leucas, in West Greenland and Canada from 1993 through 1999, using satellite-linked data recorders. Narwhals spent less time at the surface than belugas did, and the surfacing time of belugas also varied between localities. No clear differences in surfacing time were associated with the time of day, but belugas tended to make more dives during the night than during the day. Despite large variability in surfacing behaviour among individual whales, time spent at the surface by both species declined from August through November. The few data collected from narwhals from November to February indicate that surfacing times remained low during this period although more than 25% of each 6 h period was spent at the surface. Whales made between 2 and 20 dives per hour, and narwhals made significantly fewer dives than did belugas, for which number of dives varied with locality. The number of dives deeper than 8 m declined substantially during the autumn for belugas and narwhals that were moving offshore. When travelling, the whales apparently made fewer dives than at other times.De 1993 à fin 1999, on a mesuré le temps passé à la surface de la mer ou près de celle-ci par 25 narvals, Monodon monoceros, et 39 bélougas ou baleines blanches, Delphinapterus leucas, dans le Groenland occidental et au Canada, en recourant à des enregistreurs de données en liaison avec un satellite. Les narvals passaient moins de temps que les bélougas à la surface, et le temps passé par ces derniers en surface variait d'un endroit à un autre. Aucune différence marquée dans le temps de surface n'a été associé avec le moment de la journée, mais les bélougas avaient tendance à faire plus de plongées la nuit que le jour. Malgré une grande variabilité dans le comportement de surface parmi les baleines prises individuellement, le temps passé en surface par les deux espèces a diminué d'août à fin novembre. Les quelques données provenant des narvals de novembre à février indiquent que, durant cette période, les durées à la surface sont restées brèves, même si plus de 25 p. cent de chaque période de 6 h se passait en surface. Les baleines effectuaient de 2 à 20 plongées par heure, et les narvals effectuaient un nombre de plongées bien moindre que celui des bélougas, pour lesquels le nombre de plongées variait selon l'endroit. Au cours de l'automne, le nombre de plongées effectuées à plus de 8 m de profondeur diminuait sensiblement pour les bélougas et les narvals qui se déplaçaient au large. Il semble que, lorsqu'elles se déplaçaient, les baleines effectuaient moins de plongées qu'à d'autres moments

    Visinin-like protein 1 regulates natriuretic peptide receptor B in the heart

    Accumulating evidence indicates that Visinin-like protein-1 (VILIP-1), a member of the family of neuronal calcium sensor proteins (NCS), modulates a variety of processes in extra-neuronal tissues. In this study, we describe VILIP-1 expression in the human heart, rat cardiomyocytes, and H9c2 cells, and demonstrate that VILIP-1 regulates the cell surface localization of natriuretic peptide receptor B (NPR-B). In preparations from failing hearts, we observed VILIP-1 downregulation and reduced NPR-B signalling. In conclusion, VILIP-1 deficiency may be responsible for the reduced efficiency of the natriuretic peptide system in cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure and may therefore serve as pharmacological target

    The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) has published guidelines for the investigation of patients with suspected heart failure and, if the diagnosis is proven, their subsequent management. Hospitalisation provides a key point of care at which time diagnosis and treatment may be refined to improve outcome for a group of patients with a high morbidity and mortality. However, little international data exists to describe the features and management of such patients. Accordingly, the EuroHeart Failure survey was conducted to ascertain if appropriate tests were being performed with which to confirm or refute a diagnosis of heart failure and how this influenced subsequent management. Methods The survey screened consecutive deaths and discharges during 2000-2001 predominantly from medical wards over a 6-week period in 115 hospitals from 24 countries belonging to the ESC, to identify patients with known or suspected heart failure. Results A total of 46,788 deaths and discharges were screened from which 11,327 (24%) patients were enrolled with suspected or confirmed heart failure. Forty-seven percent of those enrolled were women. Fifty-one percent of women and 30% of men were aged >75 years. Eighty-three percent of patients had a diagnosis of heart failure made on or prior to the index admission. Heart failure was the principal reason for admission in 40%. The great majority of patients (>90%) had had an ECG, chest X-ray, haemoglobin and electrolytes measured as recommended in ESC guidelines, but only 66% had ever had an echocardiogram. Left ventricular ejection fraction had been measured in 57% of men and 41% of women, usually by echocardiography (84%) and was <40% in 51% of men but only in 28% of women. Forty-five percent of women and 22% of men were reported to have normal left ventricular systolic function by qualitative echocardiographic assessment. A substantial proportion of patients had alternative explanations for heart failure other than left ventricular systolic or diastolic dysfunction, including valve disease. Within 12 weeks of discharge, 24% of patients had been readmitted. A total of 1408 of 10,434 (13.5%) patients died between admission and 12 weeks follow-up. Conclusions Known or suspected heart failure comprises a large proportion of admissions to medical wards and such patients are at high risk of early readmission and death. Many of the basic investigations recommended by the ESC were usually carried out, although it is not clear whether this was by design or part of a general routine for all patients being admitted regardless of diagnosis. The investigation most specific for patients with suspected heart failure (echocardiography) was performed less frequently, suggesting that the diagnosis of heart failure is still relatively neglected. Most men but a minority of women who underwent investigation of cardiac function had evidence of moderate or severe left ventricular dysfunction, the main target of current advances in the treatment of heart failure. Considerable diagnostic uncertainty remains for many patients with suspected heart failure, even after echocardiography, which must be resolved in order to target existing and new therapies and services effectively.     Starting from an important application of Conformal Yano--Killing tensors for the existence of global charges in gravity, some new observations at \scri^+ are given. They allow to define asymptotic charges (at future null infinity) in terms of the Weyl tensor together with their fluxes through \scri^+. It occurs that some of them play a role of obstructions for the existence of angular momentum. Moreover, new relations between solutions of the Maxwell equations and the spin-2 field are given. They are used in the construction of new conserved quantities which are quadratic in terms of the Weyl tensor. The obtained formulae are similar to the functionals obtained from the Bel--Robinson tensor.Comment: 20 pages, LaTe

    Third rank Killing tensors in general relativity. The (1+1)-dimensional case

    Third rank Killing tensors in (1+1)-dimensional geometries are investigated and classified. It is found that a necessary and sufficient condition for such a geometry to admit a third rank Killing tensor can always be formulated as a quadratic PDE, of order three or lower, in a Kahler type potential for the metric. This is in contrast to the case of first and second rank Killing tensors for which the integrability condition is a linear PDE. The motivation for studying higher rank Killing tensors in (1+1)-geometries, is the fact that exact solutions of the Einstein equations are often associated with a first or second rank Killing tensor symmetry in the geodesic flow formulation of the dynamics. This is in particular true for the many models of interest for which this formulation is (1+1)-dimensional, where just one additional constant of motion suffices for complete integrability. We show that new exact solutions can be found by classifying geometries admitting higher rank Killing tensors.Comment: 16 pages, LaTe
