    Application of homotopy-perturbation method to fractional IVPs

    Fractional initial-value problems (fIVPs) arise from many fields of physics and play a very important role in various branches of science and engineering. Finding accurate and efficient methods for solving fIVPs has become an active research undertaking. In this paper, both linear and nonlinear fIVPs are considered. Exact and/or approximate analytical solutions of the fIVPs are obtained by the analytic homotopy-perturbation method (HPM). The results of applying this procedure to the studied cases show the high accuracy, simplicity and efficiency of the approach

    Absolute properties of the binary system BB Pegasi

    We present a ground based photometry of the low-temperature contact binary BB Peg. We collected all times of mid-eclipses available in literature and combined them with those obtained in this study. Analyses of the data indicate a period increase of 3.0(1) x 10^{-8} days/yr. This period increase of BB Peg can be interpreted in terms of the mass transfer 2.4 x 10^{-8} Ms yr^{-1} from the less massive to the more massive component. The physical parameters have been determined as Mc = 1.42 Ms, Mh = 0.53 Ms, Rc = 1.29 Rs, Rh = 0.83 Rs, Lc = 1.86 Ls, and Lh = 0.94 Ls through simultaneous solution of light and of the radial velocity curves. The orbital parameters of the third body, that orbits the contact system in an eccentric orbit, were obtained from the period variation analysis.     GU Boo: A New 0.6 Msun Detached Eclipsing Binary

    We have found a new low-mass, double-lined, detached eclipsing binary, GU Boo, among a sample of new variables from the ROTSE-I database. The binary has an orbital period of 0.488728 +/- 0.000002 days, and estimated apparent magnitudes Vrotse = 13.7 and I = 11.8. Our analysis of the light and radial velocity curves of the system yields individual masses and radii of M1= 0.610 +/- 0.007 Msun, M2 = 0.599 +/- 0.006 Msun, R1= 0.623 +/- 0.016 Rsun, R2= 0.620 +/- 0.020 Rsun. The stars in GU Boo are therefore very similar to the components of the eclipsing binary YY Gem. For this study we have adopted a mean effective temperature for the binary of Teff = 3870 +/- 130 K. Based on its space velocities we suggest that GU Boo is a main sequence binary, possibly with an age of several Gyr. The metallicity of the binary is not well constrained at this point but we speculate that it should not be very different from solar. We have compared the physical parameters of GU Boo with current low-mass stellar models, where we accounted for uncertainties in age and metallicity by considering a wide range of values for those parameters. Our comparisons reveal that all the models underestimate the radii of the components of GU Boo by at least 10-15%.     Electron Trap Dynamics in Polymer Light-Emitting Diodes

    Semiconducting polymers are being studied intensively for optoelectronic device applications, including solution-processed light-emitting diodes (PLEDs). Charge traps in polymers limit the charge transport and thus the PLED efficiency. It is firmly established that electron transport is hindered by the presence of the universal electron trap density, whereas hole trap formation governs the long-term degradation of PLEDs. Here, the response of PLEDs to electrical driving and breaks covering the timescale from microseconds to (a few) hours is studied, thus focusing on electron traps. As reference polymer, a phenyl-substituted poly(para-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) copolymer termed super yellow (SY) is used. Three different traps with depths between approximate to 0.4 and 0.7 eV, and a total trap site density of approximate to 2 x 10(17) cm(-3) are identified. Surprisingly, filling of deep traps takes minutes to hours, at odds with the common notion that charge trapping is complete after a few hundred microseconds. The slow trap filling feature for PLEDs is confirmed using poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene (MEH-PPV) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as active materials. This unusual phenomenon is explained with trap deactivation upon detrapping and slow trap reactivation. The results provide useful insight to pinpoint the chemical nature of the universal electron traps in semiconducting polymers

    The tobacco industry’s past role in weight control related to smoking

    Background: Smoking is thought to produce an appetite-suppressing effect by many smokers. Thus, the fear of body weight gain often outweighs the perception of health benefits associated with smoking cessation, particularly in adolescents. We examined whether the tobacco industry played a role in appetite and body weight control related to smoking and smoking cessation. Methods: We performed a systematic search within the archives of six major US and UK tobacco companies (American Tobacco, Philip Morris, RJ Reynolds, Lorillard, Brown & Williamson and British American Tobacco) that were Defendants in tobacco litigation settled in 1998. Findings are dated from 1949 to 1999. Results: The documents revealed the strategies planned and used by the industry to enhance effects of smoking on weight and appetite, mostly by chemical modifications of cigarettes contents. Appetite-suppressant molecules, such as tartaric acid and 2-acetylpyridine were added to some cigarettes. Conclusion: These tobacco companies played an active and not disclaimed role in the anti-appetite effects of smoking, at least in the past, by adding appetite-suppressant molecules into their cigarettes

    The Impact of Toluene on the Performance of Anode-Supported Ni-YSZ SOFC Operated on Hydrogen and Biosyngas

    This paper presents an experimental study of the impact of toluene on the performance of anode-supported (AS) Ni/YSZ SOFC operating at ∼800 °C, 0.25 A/cm2 fed with H2 and biosyngas. Toluene was added to the fuel stream and its concentration increased from tens to thousands of ppmv. Each poisoning test was followed by a recovery step. The main goal of this work is to define a concentration threshold of toluene as a model tar compound and to identify the degradation mechanism caused by this tar compound. Polarization behavior, IV and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were analyzed to evaluate the cell performance. A linear degradation is observed at concentrations above 1000 ppmv for the cell which was fed with H2. The degradation was due to local C(s) deposition. By contrast, toluene even up to 3500 ppm did not cause an increased degradation when the cell was fed with reformed biosyngas. © The Electrochemical Society

    A Search for Hierarchical Triples using Kepler Eclipse Timing

    We present the first results of a Kepler survey of 41 eclipsing binaries that we undertook to search for third star companions. Such tertiaries will periodically alter the eclipse timings through light travel time and dynamical effects. We discuss the prevalence of starspots and pulsation among these binaries and how these phenomena influence the eclipse times. There is no evidence of short period companions (P < 700 d) among this sample, but we do find evidence for long term timing variations in 14 targets (34%). We argue that this finding is consistent with the presence of tertiary companions among a significant fraction of the targets, especially if many have orbits measured in decades. This result supports the idea that the formation of close binaries involves the deposition of angular momentum into the orbital motion of a third star.Comment: AJ, in press, 104 pages, 2 figure sets plus 1 regular figur

    Simple derivation is presented of the four families of infinitely many shape invariant Hamiltonians corresponding to the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. Darboux-Crum transformations are applied to connect the well-known shape invariant Hamiltonians of the radial oscillator and the Darboux-P\"oschl-Teller potential to the shape invariant potentials of Odake-Sasaki. Dutta and Roy derived the two lowest members of the exceptional Laguerre polynomials by this method.     Clinical aspects of Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuester-Hauser syndrome: recommendations for clinical diagnosis and staging

    BACKGROUND: The Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuester-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a malformation of the female genitals (occurring in one in 4000 female live births) as a result of interrupted embryonic development of the Müllerian (paramesonephric) ducts. This retrospective study examined the issue of associated malformations, subtyping, and the frequency distribution of subtypes in MRKH syndrome. METHODS: Fifty-three MRKH patients were investigated using a newly developed standardized questionnaire. Together with the results of clinical and diagnostic examinations, the patients were classified into the three recognized subtypes [typical, atypical and MURCS (Müllerian duct aplasia, renal aplasia, and cervicothoracic somite dysplasia)]. RESULTS: The typical form was diagnosed in 25 patients (47%), the atypical form in 11 patients (21%), and the most marked form—the MURCS type—in 17 patients (32%). Associated malformations were notably frequent among the patients. Malformations of the renal system were the most frequent type of accompanying malformation, with 23 different malformations in 19 patients, followed by 18 different skeletal changes in 15 patients. CONCLUSIONS: In accordance with the literature, this study shows that associated malformations are present in more than a third of cases.
