Quality Assurance for Mined and Survey Areas

    Get PDF
Mechanical demining is an important and essential part of any demining process, and quality-assurance methods must constantly be revised to address the balance between safety and efficiency. Based on experience from the MineWolf mechanical demining experience, the tiller system would improve the demining process significantly, thereby increasing speed and reducing the costs of demining operations

MineWolf Flail and Tiller Machines: Testing the Differences between two Demining Technologies

    Get PDF
MineWolf is the first demining concept, manufactured in Germany by Arthur Willibald Maschinenbau GmbH (AHWI), that overcomes the limitations of flail and tiller machines by combining the advantages of both systems. Extensive tests with live anti-tank and fragmentation mines were carried out at the German Army proving ground to determine whether the MineWolf meets the operational requirements for humanitarian demining. The aim was to discover the effects of detonations on the operator, MineWolf, clearing tools and cabin, and to work out instructions for reparability

The authors argue that there is a need to turn toward cheaper and more effective mechanical demining. The future of demining technology is very important for countries with landmine-clearance needs

The psychoanalytical talking cure is interested beyond the speech act or linguistic act in language as a “structure” in the multiple sense: as a bearer of knowledge concerning pleasure/jouissance in the form of cultural imperatives (ideal demands, prohibitions and commands) in myths, fairy tales, jokes, and other manifestations of high and popular culture, and as a grammar i.e. definition of relations of subject, predicate, object (see Freud on Schreber) as well as an arsenal of logical operations that determine the course of an instinct's vicissitude: reversal into its opposite, active-passive, turning round upon the subject's own self, condensation and displacement, etc.text. These structures result from the culture process (as its interim results), emerge from processes of repression and sublimation, which for their part form the current psychic instruments, including those of sublimation and psychoanalytic work. For their part, they form the current psychic instruments, including those of sublimation and psychoanalytic work

Critical Velocities in Open Capillary Flow

This paper describes the proposed research program on open capillary flow and the preliminary work performed theoretically and in drop tower experiments. The work focuses on the fundamental physical understanding of the flow through capillary bound geometries, where the circumference of the cross section of the flow path contains free surfaces. Examples for such a flow configuration are capillary vanes in surface tension tanks, flow along edges and corners and flow through liquid bridges. The geometries may be classified by their cross section areas, wetted circumferences and the radii of curvature of the free surfaces. In the streaming float zone the flow path is bound by a free surface only. The ribbon vane is a model for vane types used in surface tension tanks, where a structure in proximity to the tank wall forms a capillary gap. A groove is used in heat pipes for the transportation of the condensed working fluid to the heat source and a wedge may occur in a spaceborne experiment where fluid has to be transported by the means of surface tension. The research objectives are the determination of the maximum volume flux, the observation of the free surfaces and the liquid flow inside the flow path as well as the evaluation of the limiting capillary wave speed. The restriction of the maximum volume flux is due to convective forces (flow velocity exceeding the capillary wave speed) and/or viscous forces, i.e. the viscous head loss along the flow path must be compensated by the capillary pressure due to the curved free surface. Exceeding the maximum volume flux leads to the choking of the flow path, thus the free surface collapses and.gas ingestion occurs at the outlet. The means are ground-based experimental work with plateau tanks and in a drop tower, a sounding rocket flight, and theoretical analysis with integral balances as well as full three dimensional CFD solutions for flow with free surfaces

Night-time activity forecast by season and weather in a longitudinal design:natural light effects on three years' rest-activity cycles in nursing home residents with dementia

Backround: Night-time agitation is a frequent symptom of dementia. It often causes nursing home admission and has been linked to circadian rhythm disturbances. A positive influence of light interventions on night-time agitation was shown in several studies. The aim of our study was to investigate whether there is a long-term association between regional weather data (as indicator for daylight availability) and 24-hour variations of motor activity. Methods: Motor activity of 20 elderly nursing home residents living with dementia was analyzed using recordings of continuously worn wrist activity monitors over a three-year period. The average recording duration was 479 206 days per participant (mean SD). Regional cloud amount and day length data from the local weather station (latitude: 52 degrees 56N) were included in the analysis to investigate their effects on several activity variables. Results: Nocturnal rest, here defined as the five consecutive hours with the least motor activity during 24 hours (L5), was the most predictable activity variable per participant. There was a significant interaction of night-time activity with day length and cloud amount (F-1,F-1174 = 4.39; p = 0.036). Night-time activity was higher on cloudy short days than on clear short days (p = 0.007), and it was also higher on cloudy short days than on cloudy long days (p = 0.032). Conclusions: The need for sufficient zeitgeber (time cue) strength during winter time, especially when days are short and skies are cloudy, is crucial for elderly people living with dementia. Activity forecast by season and weather might be a valuable approach to anticipate adequately complementary use of electrical light and thereby foster lower night-time activity
