Ānāpāna: Neuro-engineering of Mindfulness
Meditation benefits have been widely supported by many research works. It is considered a natural way of reducing stress, depression, and other anxiety disorders. However, meditation process is a breathe pursuing task that requires long time training to avoid the so-called mind wandering. In this work, we propose a neural-feedback system that detects when mind wanders and generates an audible signal, this way patient’s attention is recovered back again. Finally, we support our approach by testing the system on novice and advanced meditators

Characteristics of diabetes care in an institutional network of health services Medellin. 2005-2008
ABSTRACT: Because of its severity, frequency and increasing
social and economic impact, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is
considered the third priority health problem in the world.
Although to date there is no curative treatment, it does have
effective measures to reduce its occurrence and limit its complications.
Objective: to describe the control program of diabetes
in a statewide network of health services in regard to
clinical variables, the epidemiology of population served and
the control actions, in order to identify strategies for improvement.
Methodology: operational research based on secondary
data. We reviewed the general conditions of operation of
the program based on records of patient care. We studied a
random sample of medical records of patients served by the
control program of diabetes care units in the network.
The results were validated in a meeting with officials of the
institution. Results: we detected flaws and points of improvement
in the performance of the control program that resulted
in specific recommendations for the institutional network.
Other failures are due to rules that hinder health system monitoring
and control of the DM at the first level. Conclusion:
the review of medical records reveals important problems
about registration, monitoring and control of diabetics. Other
regulatory and contractual provisions of the colombian health
system were identified as restrictions that prevent the program
to control hyperglycemia and early detection of renal
damage. These restrictions could be affecting the programs of
control of diabetes in other institutions of the country that are
subject to the same rules.RESUMEN: Por su gravedad, frecuencia creciente e impacto económico y
The construction of the nation in Colombia has been a problema due partially to its territorial heterogeneity since the regional fragmentation and the imposition of an administrative center preceded the nation as a community of identities. This situation has have repercussions on the Colombian literature, seeing that the history of the literature of the regions has been parallel written during more than one hundred years. This way, the studies disseminated by authors of this region represent actual discursive opportunities to criticize the canon and the idea of nation, in view of the fact that they begin from a point so far ignored: our diversity
Salud UIS 2010; 42: Palabras clave: Lippia alba (Mill) N.E. Brown, herpesvirus humano 1, agentes antivirales, aceite esencial, verbenaceae ABSTRACT Introduction: Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E. Brown is an aromatic shrub belonging to the Verbenaceae family, which is widely used all over South and Central America as an infusion against, hypertension, digestive troubles, nausea and cold. Objective: The antiviral activity in vitro against Herpesvirus 1, Human (HSV-1) of twenty essential oils of L. alba and ten of its components were evaluated.Methodology: The antiviral activity was determined using a modified end-point titration technique (EPPT). The essential oils from L. alba collected in different regions of Colombia were obtained by microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MWHD). Their chemical compositions were determined by GC and GC/MS. Two chemotypes were distinguished, characterized by carvone and citral as main constituents. Results and conclusions: Carvone chemotype oils BC1 and CA2 were found to be moderate antiviral activity over infected confluent monolayers of HeLa cells with Rf value of 1x101,5 at a concentration of 250μg/mL and 125μg/mL, respectively. Heparin sodium salt and acyclovir were used as positive controls and showed Rf values of 1x102 and 1x104, respectively. None of monoterpenes tested showed antiviral activity against HSV-1.
