Super-resolution microscopy: a brief history and new avenues.
Super-resolution microscopy (SRM) is a fast-developing field that encompasses fluorescence imaging techniques with the capability to resolve objects below the classical diffraction limit of optical resolution. Acknowledged with the Nobel prize in 2014, numerous SRM methods have meanwhile evolved and are being widely applied in biomedical research, all with specific strengths and shortcomings. While some techniques are capable of nanometre-scale molecular resolution, others are geared towards volumetric three-dimensional multi-colour or fast live-cell imaging. In this editorial review, we pick on the latest trends in the field. We start with a brief historical overview of both conceptual and commercial developments. Next, we highlight important parameters for imaging successfully with a particular super-resolution modality. Finally, we discuss the importance of reproducibility and quality control and the significance of open-source tools in microscopy. An Integral Kernel for Weakly Pseudoconvex Domains
A new explicit construction of Cauchy-Fantappi\'e kernels is introduced for
an arbitrary weakly pseudoconvex domain with smooth boundary. While not
holomorphic in the parameter, the new kernel reflects the complex geometry and
the Levi form of the boundary. Some estimates are obtained for the
corresponding integral operator, which provide evidence that this kernel and
related constructions give useful new tools for complex analysis on this
general class of domains
Statistical analysis of the features of diatonic music with jMusic
Much has been written about the rules of melody writing and this paper reports research that uses computer-based statistical analysis to test the efficacy of these rules. As a method to assist in the computer generation of melodies, we have devised computer software that analyses melodic features. This paper will outline the melodic features identified in melody-writing literature and the results of their fit with our statistical analysis of melodies from the western music repertoire. We will also present details of the computer-based analysis software and the jMusic software environment in which it was built. A comparison of the clinical populations of the Oregon Optometric Center and the Pacific University Optometric Clinics
This is a study comparing the populations of two optometric clinics. The purpose of this study is to present a statistical comparison of the Oregon Optometric Center and the Pacific University Optometric Clinic. A questionnaire was completed by Junior and Senior Optometry. Students to record these differences. The results showed significant differences between the two populations as to the patient\u27s last visual examination, last medical or dental examination, residence, education, entrance habitual visual acuity, presbyopic near prescripti on, and the near nonpresbyopic prescription. Recommendations are included for present use and further study
Effect of practical layered dielectric loads on SAR patterns from dual concentric conductor microstrip antennas
Radiation patterns of 2 and 4cm square Dual Concentric Conductor (DCC) microstrip antennas were studied theoretically with Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) analysis and compared with experimental measurements of power deposition (SAR) in layered lossy dielectric loads. Single and array configurations were investigated with 915 MHz excitation applied across either one, two or four sides, or four corners of the square apertures. FDTD simulations were carried out for realistic models of a muscle tissue load coupled to the DCC antennas with a 5 mm thick bolus of either distilled water or low loss Silicone Oil. This study characterizes the effect on SAR of adding three additional thin dielectric layers which are necessary for clinical use of the applicator. These layers consist of a 0.1 mm thick dielectric coating on the array surface to provide electrical isolation of DCC apertures, and 0.15 mm thick plastic layers above and below the bolus to contain the liquid. Experimental measurements of SAR in a plane 1 cm deep in muscle phantom agree well with theoretical FDTD simulations in the multi-layered tissue models. These studies reveal significant changes in SAR for applicator configurations involving low dielectric constant (Er) layers on either side of a high Er water bolus layer. Prominent changes include a broadening and centring of the SAR under each aperture as well as increased SAR penetration in muscle. No significant differences are noted between the simple and complete load configurations for the low Er Silicone Oil bolus. Both theoretical and measured data demonstrate relatively uniform SAR distributions with50% of maximum SAR extending to the perimeter of single and multi-aperture array configurations of DCC applicators when using a thin 5 mm water or Silicone Oil bolus
Random replicators with high-order interactions
We use tools of the equilibrium statistical mechanics of disordered systems
to study analytically the statistical properties of an ecosystem composed of N
species interacting via random, Gaussian interactions of order p >= 2, and
deterministic self-interactions u <= 0. We show that for nonzero u the effect
of increasing the order of the interactions is to make the system more
cooperative, in the sense that the fraction of extinct species is greatly
reduced. Furthermore, we find that for p > 2 there is a threshold value which
gives a lower bound to the concentration of the surviving species, preventing
then the existence of rare species and, consequently, increasing the robustness
of the ecosystem to external perturbations.Comment: 7 pages, 4 Postscript figure
Cervical artery dissection: An atypical presentation with Ehlers-Danlos-like collagen pathology?
The authors took skin biopsies of the macroscopically normal skin of seven consecutive patients with spontaneous cervical artery dissection (SCAD). Histologically, alterations of the collagen and elastic fiber networks were found in six patients. In five, the histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural changes were similar to those usually found in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS). This suggests that SCAD is frequently associated with the dermal alterations seen in EDS
Resonant tunneling through a C60 molecular junction in liquid environment
We present electronic transport measurements through thiolated C
molecules in liquid environment. The molecules were placed within a
mechanically controllable break junction using a single anchoring group per
molecule. When varying the electrode separation of the C-modified
junctions, we observed a peak in the conductance traces. The shape of the
curves is strongly influenced by the environment of the junction as shown by
measurements in two distinct solvents. In the framework of a simple resonant
tunneling model, we can extract the electronic tunneling rates governing the
