    Maximally symmetric stabilizer MUBs in even prime-power dimensions

    One way to construct a maximal set of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in a prime-power dimensional Hilbert space is by means of finite phase-space methods. MUBs obtained in this way are covariant with respect to some subgroup of the group of all affine symplectic phase-space transformations. However, this construction is not canonical: as a consequence, many different choices of covariance sugroups are possible. In particular, when the Hilbert space is 2n2^n dimensional, it is known that covariance with respect to the full group of affine symplectic phase-space transformations can never be achieved. Here we show that in this case there exist two essentially different choices of maximal subgroups admitting covariant MUBs. For both of them, we explicitly construct a family of 2n2^n covariant MUBs. We thus prove that, contrary to the odd dimensional case, maximally covariant MUBs are very far from being unique.Comment: 22 page

    Refining the planktic foraminiferal I/Ca proxy:Results from the Southeast Atlantic Ocean

    Profound changes in upper ocean oxygenation have taken place in recent decades and are expected to continue in the future, but the complexity of the processes driving these changes has yet to be fully unraveled. Planktic foraminiferal I/Ca is a promising tool to reconstruct the extent of past upper ocean oxygenation, but a thorough assessment is necessary to evaluate both its potential and its limitations. We used foraminifers from Holocene core-tops (Southeast Atlantic Ocean) to document planktic I/Ca across a range of oceanographic conditions. Subsurface O2 concentrations may be the dominant control on planktic foraminiferal I/Ca and planktic I/Ca decreases rapidly at low O2 conditions (O2 < ∼70–100 µmol/kg). We thus document that low planktic I/Ca can be used empirically to indicate hypoxia in the upper water column, but questions remain as to the mechanistic understanding of the relation between seawater iodine speciation change, its O2 threshold and foraminiferal I/Ca. Planktic I/Ca records from core GeoB1720-2 (Benguela Upwelling System, SE Atlantic) suggest that hypoxic waters were present near the site persistently during the last 240 ka, without clear glacial-interglacial variability

    Neuropathologic basis of frontotemporal dementia in progressive supranuclear palsy.

    BackgroundProgressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by neuronal loss in the extrapyramidal system with pathologic accumulation of tau in neurons and glia. The most common clinical presentation of PSP, referred to as Richardson syndrome, is that of atypical parkinsonism with vertical gaze palsy, axial rigidity, and frequent falls. Although cognitive deficits in PSP are often ascribed to subcortical dysfunction, a subset of patients has dementia with behavioral features similar to the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia. In this study we aimed to identify the clinical and pathological characteristics of PSP presenting with frontotemporal dementia.MethodsIn this study, we compared clinical and pathologic characteristics of 31 patients with PSP with Richardson syndrome with 15 patients with PSP with frontotemporal dementia. For pathological analysis, we used semiquantitative methods to assess neuronal and glial lesions with tau immunohistochemistry, as well image analysis of tau burden using digital microscopic methods.ResultsWe found greater frontal and temporal neocortical neuronal tau pathology in PSP with frontotemporal dementia compared with PSP with Richardson syndrome. White matter tau pathology was also greater in PSP with frontotemporal dementia than PSP with Richardson syndrome. Genetic and demographic factors were not associated with atypical distribution of tau pathology in PSP with frontotemporal dementia.ConclusionsThe results confirm the subset of cognitive-predominant PSP mimicking frontotemporal dementia in PSP. PSP with frontotemporal dementia has distinct clinical features that differ from PSP with Richardson syndrome, as well as differences in distribution and density of tau pathology. © 2019 The Authors.     β-adrenergic-mediated dynamic augmentation of sarcolemmal CaV 1.2 clustering and co-operativity in ventricular myocytes.

    Key pointsPrevailing dogma holds that activation of the β-adrenergic receptor/cAMP/protein kinase A signalling pathway leads to enhanced L-type CaV 1.2 channel activity, resulting in increased Ca2+ influx into ventricular myocytes and a positive inotropic response. However, the full mechanistic and molecular details underlying this phenomenon are incompletely understood. CaV 1.2 channel clusters decorate T-tubule sarcolemmas of ventricular myocytes. Within clusters, nanometer proximity between channels permits Ca2+ -dependent co-operative gating behaviour mediated by physical interactions between adjacent channel C-terminal tails. We report that stimulation of cardiomyocytes with isoproterenol, evokes dynamic, protein kinase A-dependent augmentation of CaV 1.2 channel abundance along cardiomyocyte T-tubules, resulting in the appearance of channel 'super-clusters', and enhanced channel co-operativity that amplifies Ca2+ influx. On the basis of these data, we suggest a new model in which a sub-sarcolemmal pool of pre-synthesized CaV 1.2 channels resides in cardiomyocytes and can be mobilized to the membrane in times of high haemodynamic or metabolic demand, to tune excitation-contraction coupling.AbstractVoltage-dependent L-type CaV 1.2 channels play an indispensable role in cardiac excitation-contraction coupling. Activation of the β-adrenergic receptor (βAR)/cAMP/protein kinase A (PKA) signalling pathway leads to enhanced CaV 1.2 activity, resulting in increased Ca2+ influx into ventricular myocytes and a positive inotropic response. CaV 1.2 channels exhibit a clustered distribution along the T-tubule sarcolemma of ventricular myocytes where nanometer proximity between channels permits Ca2+ -dependent co-operative gating behaviour mediated by dynamic, physical, allosteric interactions between adjacent channel C-terminal tails. This amplifies Ca2+ influx and augments myocyte Ca2+ transient and contraction amplitudes. We investigated whether βAR signalling could alter CaV 1.2 channel clustering to facilitate co-operative channel interactions and elevate Ca2+ influx in ventricular myocytes. Bimolecular fluorescence complementation experiments reveal that the βAR agonist, isoproterenol (ISO), promotes enhanced CaV 1.2-CaV 1.2 physical interactions. Super-resolution nanoscopy and dynamic channel tracking indicate that these interactions are expedited by enhanced spatial proximity between channels, resulting in the appearance of CaV 1.2 'super-clusters' along the z-lines of ISO-stimulated cardiomyocytes. The mechanism that leads to super-cluster formation involves rapid, dynamic augmentation of sarcolemmal CaV 1.2 channel abundance after ISO application. Optical and electrophysiological single channel recordings confirm that these newly inserted channels are functional and contribute to overt co-operative gating behaviour of CaV 1.2 channels in ISO stimulated myocytes. The results of the present study reveal a new facet of βAR-mediated regulation of CaV 1.2 channels in the heart and support the novel concept that a pre-synthesized pool of sub-sarcolemmal CaV 1.2 channel-containing vesicles/endosomes resides in cardiomyocytes and can be mobilized to the sarcolemma to tune excitation-contraction coupling to meet metabolic and/or haemodynamic demands

    MUBs inequivalence and affine planes

    There are fairly large families of unitarily inequivalent complete sets of N+1 mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in C^N for various prime powers N. The number of such sets is not bounded above by any polynomial as a function of N. While it is standard that there is a superficial similarity between complete sets of MUBs and finite affine planes, there is an intimate relationship between these large families and affine planes. This note briefly summarizes "old" results that do not appear to be well-known concerning known families of complete sets of MUBs and their associated planes.Comment: This is the version of this paper appearing in J.     Evaluation of the Wood and Plastic Formworks in Building Construction Industry for Sustainable Development

    This research work assessed wood and plastic in building construction. The study was a descriptive survey design and as such made use of questionnaire with 42 items. The Population of the study was 110 respondents which include 40 building professional and 70 non-building professional. The data were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The finding of the study shows that plastic work form can be used for casting slab, concrete wall among others. The finding also revealed some factors that determines the selection of form work such as climatic condition, labour efficiency and that plastic formwork saves cost as a result of long reuse period. It is therefore recommended that; plastic and wooden formwork should be integrated often in the casting of slabs, beam and columns without discrimination, proper adherence to standards and specifications for use of any type of formwork, there should be large scale production of plastic formwork to conserve forest and wood, factors to be considered in the selection of formwork should not be ignored, there should be proper weighing of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of formwork relating to the scale of construction before the choice of any formwork

    Fibroblast-like synoviocytes orchestrate daily rhythmic inflammation in arthritis

    Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease that shows characteristic diurnal variation in symptom severity, where joint resident fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) act as important mediators of arthritis pathology. We investigate the role of FLS circadian clock function in directing rhythmic joint inflammation in a murine model of inflammatory arthritis. We demonstrate FLS time-of-day-dependent gene expression is attenuated in arthritic joints, except for a subset of disease-modifying genes. The deletion of essential clock gene Bmal1 in FLS reduced susceptibility to collagen-induced arthritis but did not impact symptomatic severity in affected mice. Notably, FLS Bmal1 deletion resulted in loss of diurnal expression of disease-modulating genes across the joint, and elevated production of MMP3, a prognostic marker of joint damage in inflammatory arthritis. This work identifies the FLS circadian clock as an influential driver of daily oscillations in joint inflammation, and a potential regulator of destructive pathology in chronic inflammatory arthritis
