Representations of the concept of pedagogical supervision among teachers

Considering teaching and education, the challenges we face daily are increasingly relevant, for all agents involved. Given the time that children spend in school, a good pedagogical relationship, between teachers and students, is very important in the development of children. So, teachers seek for strategies to make the process of teaching and learning more engaging for students, and more rewarding for themselves. This empirical study was developed within the scope of the theory of social representations (Moscovici, 1961/1976). We aimed to understand, first of all, the way how teachers (N=176), men and women, of the 1st and 2nd stages of basic education, in Portugal, represent the concept of pedagogical supervision, and also the way how the representations found can be related to the way they usually feel in classroom. The data was gathered using free associations of words, derived from open questions that were individually made, in an questionnaire (e.g., ‘Pedagogical supervision makes me think of...’; or ‘Pedagogical supervision makes me feel...’). Results were examined through the technique of factorial analysis of correspondences (FCA). Among the main findings, it was verified that, in general, the teachers of the 2nd stage feel more active than those of the 1st stage, linking the concept of pedagogical supervision with a helpful process that is led by someone with more experience and scientific knowledge. Women, compared to men, demonstrate more nervousness and anxiety, when confronted with pedagogical supervision, tending to anchor the supervision with the evaluation process that all teachers have throughout their career

Fitting isochrones to open cluster photometric data III. Estimating metallicities from UBV photometry

The metallicity is a critical parameter that affects the correct determination fundamental characteristics stellar cluster and has important implications in Galactic and Stellar evolution research. Fewer than 10 % of the 2174 currently catalog open clusters have their metallicity determined in the literature. In this work we present a method for estimating the metallicity of open clusters via non-subjective isochrone fitting using the cross-entropy global optimization algorithm applied to UBV photometric data. The free parameters distance, reddening, age, and metallicity simultaneously determined by the fitting method. The fitting procedure uses weights for the observational data based on the estimation of membership likelihood for each star, which considers the observational magnitude limit, the density profile of stars as a function of radius from the center of the cluster, and the density of stars in multi-dimensional magnitude space. We present results of [Fe/H] for nine well-studied open clusters based on 15 distinct UBV data sets. The [Fe/H] values obtained in the ten cases for which spectroscopic determinations were available in the literature agree, indicating that our method provides a good alternative to determining [Fe/H] by using an objective isochrone fitting. Our results show that the typical precision is about 0.1 dex

Looking through landscapes of technology: Impact of virtual worlds in children's lives

The new technologies are becoming more crucial in many areas of our lives. Everything that relates to technologies, telecommunications and information systems, may give us benefits, facilitating and speeding up many tasks, in a convenient way. Here, we highlight the impact of the virtual worlds in children’s lives and experiences, particularly, the role of computers in learning - as an essential tool that also facilitates interactivity between teachers and students. (The technological innovations can also be poorly used, due to ignorance or perversity, for instance, to disseminate misleading information or private images, online). We conducted an exploratory study, with a population of boys and girls, between 9 and 11 years old, attending the fourth year of schooling. We intended to verify the importance that children give to the computer in their personal, social and cognitive development - and how they use this technology, daily. The main goal was to identify the perceptions of children in relation to the importance of the computer in their learning, and in their lives. Most children said that can't live without the computer, emphasizing the help it gives them, mainly by the possibility to research on the internet, where they can learn, find help for their homework, and access (so often with no control) to information previously unknown. They also like to feel connected to friends. Children associate the use of computer with intelligence, because through it they can answer to questions and have access to information about everything happening on the world. Girls use the computer especially to perform research or homework, and to talk with friends, while boys use the computer mainly for entertainment and gaming (including online games). Children surf in the virtual worlds with ease and practical sense, searching for knowledge, emotions and experience. Yet, they run risks, especially in social networks (like Facebook).info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

School through the eyes of children... are we just bricks in the wall?

Over the years it has been debated what should be the role of school, which is the best teaching practices, and the most appropriate methods in primary education. However, rarely we are available to hear who is at the center of any education system... The student, the child within… We may wonder what children really think. What are their needs and aspirations? Listening to children, we can better understand their ideas, feelings, desires and dreams, about teaching and the school they attend, and how this is reflected in their behavior and development. Their representations of school allow us to rethink education and school itself. So, in this study, we were guided by the eyes of children aged between 8 and 11 years, of both sexes, attending elementary school, in Lisbon. What do they think and how they feel about school? What are their wishes and how they imagine school should be? These were the main objectives. The data was gathered using free associations of words, from questions individually made, and examined through Factorial Correspondence Analysis. Children link school both to playful and learning dimensions. In fact the most important for all of them is the playful side of school, a place where they can meet peers and establish important relations, also with teachers. They care about each other, they wish to learn and feel free. They yearn for a better school… Remembering Pink Floyd, we hope we are not just contributing for more 'bricks in the wall'.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
