    Los "traficantes de cultura": sobre agentes y enseñanza de la literatura

    En el siguiente artículos surgen las siguientes preguntas: ¿podrá el profesor de literatura resolver esa difícil negociación entre el placer de leer (y escribir) y la tarea de enseñar?, ¿podrá impedir que se borre, neutralice o entorpezca ese primer vínculo lector?; ¿“barajar nuevamente las cartas”; es decir, volver sobre sus propias prácticas para reflexionar, desde un enfoque cualitativo, sobre los modos de leer de los alumnos? En estos interrogantes subyacen otros planteos. En primer lugar, habría que repreguntarse por el rol del docente y su labor como agente social: ¿es un agente?, ¿por qué?, ¿qué se entiende por tal? En segundo lugar, y esto en relación al profesor de literatura en particular: ¿cuál ha sido y es su relación con las teorías?, ¿qué se entiende por tales relaciones?, ¿cuáles son esas teorías que han “moldeado” a ese sujeto “pedagogizado”, como si fueran recetas a seguir?, ¿qué cuestionar de las mismas?, ¿a qué otros marcos les podemos dar cabida en nuestras prácticas y que tal vez no han tenido presencia porque permanecieron solapados por otros discursos legitimados y hegemónicos?     Contribution of L-Arginine supplementation during gestation on sow productive performance and on sow microbial faecal profile

    Arginine plays an important role during reproduction, however, the amount of supplementation in sow diet is still uncertain. The aim of the study was to verify the efficacy of a gestating diet enriched or not with a low dose of L-arginine (Arg) on sow productive performance in terms of numbers and weight of piglets at birth and at weaning, frequency of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and piglets' mortality, sow placenta weight and salivary humoral immunity and intestinal microbial balance of the sows. 205 sows (Landrace x Large White) were divided into two experimental groups: a control group (CON) (102 sows) and a group supplemented with 0.25% of Arg (ARG) for the whole pregnancy period. Saliva and faecal samples were collected two days before farrowing and used for immunoglobulins and microbial analysis, respectively. Arg improved the number of total born piglets (p = .043) and tended to improve the number of total born alive (p = .086) and to reduce IUGR % (p = .090) and dead piglets at d0–d3 (p = .088). The weight of placenta and humoral immunity were not influenced by Arg. Arg did not modify the faecal microbial structure (alpha and beta indices) but increased the relative abundance of Bacteroidaceae family and Bacteroides genera (p = .0001). The results support the knowledge that Arg plays a key role in nutrition and physiology of pregnant sows without compromising gut eubiosis.HighlightArg supplementation of sows' gestation diet increased the number of total bornsArg supplementation of sows' gestation diet did not negatively affect the sows' gut eubiosisArg plays a significant role in the nutrition of pregnant sows.     Effects of dog-assisted therapies on cognitive mnemonic capabilities in people affected by Alzheimer's disease

    Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia in humans and, currently, a valid treatment is lacking. Our goal is to demonstrate the importance and benefits of the relationship with companion animals (considered as co-therapists), intended as a means of facilitating social relations and promoting evident wellbeing in AD patients. The study involved 30 randomly chosen patients with Alzheimer’s disease (group T) and three dogs. The group participated in a total of 24 animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) sessions over a span of 12 weeks, using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Wellness and Cognitive Ability Questionnaire (Brief Assessment Cognition or BAC), and Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS) as assessment tests. A second group (group C), consisting of 10 people with AD, was enrolled as control group and underwent the same assessment tests but did not benefit from the presence of the dogs. Tests were carried out at time T0 (before starting sessions), T1 (end of sessions), and T2 (two months after last session). People belonging to group T achieved an overall improvement in their perceived state of wellbeing, even on a cognitive and mnemonic plane. However, two months after the end of the sessions, the test results in people suffering from AD decreased towards the baseline (T0). The study shows how such progress can be achieved through activities based on the relationship with an animal, as long as the animal is a steady presence in the life of the patient receiving the intervention. Dogs involved in other dog-assisted therapies have been found suitable also for assisting patients with AD

    Angiogenesis in hand chondroma: an immunohistochemical study.

    Hand chondroma is a particular cartilagineous tumour, being clinically benign, but morphologically malignant. This study investigates the expression of VEGF together with other growth factors and proliferation markers such as TGF&bT2, Ki-67, TNF, FGF1, P53 in 8 cases of hand chondroma treated with courettage, in order to define the ethiopathogenesis of this tumour and the clinical significance of the resulting immunohistochemical profile, with particular respect to angiogenesis. VEGF was expressed in all cases; 5 cases were positive for TFGβ2 and 3 for PDGF. None of the other factors was expressed. On the basis of histologic results a specific model of tumour progression based on the indicators of angiogenesis could be related to hand tumours, in which VEGF expression should be the first stadium of the tumour aggressiveness, and the following PDGF, TGF 2 expression should be accompanied with a morphological outline worsening. Nevertheless the non constant expression of these indicators and the absent expression of proliferated indicators can explain the scant tendency to the relapse in presence of accurate curettage. It is important to remember that the cellular polymorphism typical of the cartilaginous tumours does not allow the application of an only oncogenesis model

    Detection and quantification of breast arterial calcifications on mammograms: a deep learning approach

    ObjectiveBreast arterial calcifications (BAC) are a sex-specific cardiovascular disease biomarker that might improve cardiovascular risk stratification in women. We implemented a deep convolutional neural network for automatic BAC detection and quantification.MethodsIn this retrospective study, four readers labelled four-view mammograms as BAC positive (BAC+) or BAC negative (BAC-) at image level. Starting from a pretrained VGG16 model, we trained a convolutional neural network to discriminate BAC+ and BAC- mammograms. Accuracy, F1 score, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) were used to assess the diagnostic performance. Predictions of calcified areas were generated using the generalized gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM++) method, and their correlation with manual measurement of BAC length in a subset of cases was assessed using Spearman rho.ResultsA total 1493 women (198 BAC+) with a median age of 59 years (interquartile range 52-68) were included and partitioned in a training set of 410 cases (1640 views, 398 BAC+), validation set of 222 cases (888 views, 89 BAC+), and test set of 229 cases (916 views, 94 BAC+). The accuracy, F1 score, and AUC-ROC were 0.94, 0.86, and 0.98 in the training set; 0.96, 0.74, and 0.96 in the validation set; and 0.97, 0.80, and 0.95 in the test set, respectively. In 112 analyzed views, the Grad-CAM++ predictions displayed a strong correlation with BAC measured length (rho = 0.88, p < 0.001).ConclusionOur model showed promising performances in BAC detection and in quantification of BAC burden, showing a strong correlation with manual measurements

    APOLLO 11 Project, Consortium in Advanced Lung Cancer Patients Treated With Innovative Therapies: Integration of Real-World Data and Translational Research

    Introduction: Despite several therapeutic efforts, lung cancer remains a highly lethal disease. Novel therapeutic approaches encompass immune-checkpoint inhibitors, targeted therapeutics and antibody-drug conjugates, with different results. Several studies have been aimed at identifying biomarkers able to predict benefit from these therapies and create a prediction model of response, despite this there is a lack of information to help clinicians in the choice of therapy for lung cancer patients with advanced disease. This is primarily due to the complexity of lung cancer biology, where a single or few biomarkers are not sufficient to provide enough predictive capability to explain biologic differences; other reasons include the paucity of data collected by single studies performed in heterogeneous unmatched cohorts and the methodology of analysis. In fact, classical statistical methods are unable to analyze and integrate the magnitude of information from multiple biological and clinical sources (eg, genomics, transcriptomics, and radiomics). Methods and objectives: APOLLO11 is an Italian multicentre, observational study involving patients with a diagnosis of advanced lung cancer (NSCLC and SCLC) treated with innovative therapies. Retrospective and prospective collection of multiomic data, such as tissue- (eg, for genomic, transcriptomic analysis) and blood-based biologic material (eg, ctDNA, PBMC), in addition to clinical and radiological data (eg, for radiomic analysis) will be collected. The overall aim of the project is to build a consortium integrating different datasets and a virtual biobank from participating Italian lung cancer centers. To face with the large amount of data provided, AI and ML techniques will be applied will be applied to manage this large dataset in an effort to build an R-Model, integrating retrospective and prospective population-based data. The ultimate goal is to create a tool able to help physicians and patients to make treatment decisions. Conclusion: APOLLO11 aims to propose a breakthrough approach in lung cancer research, replacing the old, monocentric viewpoint towards a multicomprehensive, multiomic, multicenter model. Multicenter cancer datasets incorporating common virtual biobank and new methodologic approaches including artificial intelligence, machine learning up to deep learning is the road to the future in oncology launched by this project
