    Growing up, it’s common to hear people tell students to study something they are passionate about in order to do what they love later in life. Students are often told that when one’s job encompasses what one loves, they will never work a day in their life. After attending photographer Latisha (“L” for short) Renee Blount’s presentation, “Making Outdoor Spaces More Inclusive”, it’s safe to say that Blount is someone who has done just that. By combining her love of the outdoors, and her passion for photography, Blount was able to craft a career that enables her to capture the human element in the beauty of an outdoor setting

    A myeloma paraprotein with specificity for platelet glycoprotein IIIa in a patient with a fatal bleeding

    Abstract Impaired platelet aggregation, normal shape change, and agglutination and normal ATP secretion and thromboxane synthesis in response to high concentrations of thrombin or arachidonic acid were found in a patient with multiple myeloma and hemorrhagic tendency. The purified IgG1 kappa or its F(ab'}2 fragments induced similar changes when added in vitro to plateletrich plasma from normal subjects. In addition, the paraprotein inhibited adhesion to glass microbeads, fibrin clot retraction, and binding of radiolabeled fibrinogen or von Willebrand factor to platelets exposed to thrombin or arachidonic acid without affecting intraplatelet levels of cAMP. The radiolabeled paraprotein bound to an average of 35,000 sites on normal platelets but it bound to <2,000 sites on the platelets from a patient with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia. Immunoprecipitation studies showed that the platelet antigen identified by the paraprotein was the glycoprotein IlIa. Furthermore, binding of radiolabeled prostaglandin El (PGEI) to resting platelets as well as binding of von Willebrand factor to platelets stimulated with ristocetin were entirely normal in the presence of patient's inhibitor. These studies indicate that bleeding occurring in dysproteinemia may be the result of a specific interaction of monoclonal paraproteins with platelets. In addition, our data support the concept that the interaction of fibrinogen and/or von Willebrand factor with the platelet glycoprotein Ilb-IIla complex is essential for effective hemostasis

    Role of Gas6 Receptors in Platelet Signaling during Thrombus Stabilization and Implications for Antithrombotic Therapy

    Mechanisms regulating thrombus stabilization remain largely unknown. Here, we report that loss of any 1 of the Gas6 receptors (Gas6-Rs), i.e., Tyro3, Axl, or Mer, or delivery of a soluble extracellular domain of Axl that traps Gas6 protects mice against life-threatening thrombosis. Loss of a Gas6-R does not prevent initial platelet aggregation but impairs subsequent stabilization of platelet aggregates, at least in part by reducing “outside-in” signaling and platelet granule secretion. Gas6, through its receptors, activates PI3K and Akt and stimulates tyrosine phosphorylation of the β3 integrin, thereby amplifying outside-in signaling via αIIbβ3. Blocking the Gas6-R–αIIbβ3 integrin cross-talk might be a novel approach to the reduction of thrombosis

    Millions of blood products are transfused every year; many lives are thus directly concerned by transfusion. The three main labile blood products used in transfusion are erythrocyte concentrates, platelet concentrates and fresh frozen plasma. Each of these products has to be stored according to its particular components. However, during storage, modifications or degradation of those components may occur, and are known as storage lesions. Thus, biomarker discovery of in vivo blood aging as well as in vitro labile blood products storage lesions is of high interest for the transfusion medicine community. Pre-analytical issues are of major importance in analyzing the various blood products during storage conditions as well as according to various protocols that are currently used in blood banks for their preparations. This paper will review key elements that have to be taken into account in the context of proteomic-based biomarker discovery applied to blood banking

    How the Media Frames Pregnant Female Athletes

    1 page.The purpose of this research is to examine how female athletes are framed and covered in the media in regard to both pregnancy and motherhood. The media plays an important role in framing women’s sport and how the media covers female athletes, has an impact on the way the public views them. By conducting a limited case study approach analyzing the news and sports media coverage of four athletes: Serena Williams, Alysia Montaño, Joy Fawcett, and Candace Parker, I aim to answer my research question regarding what the common frames are when referring to pregnant female athletes and if there are differences in how team athletes versus individual athletes are framed. By also considering factors of race, I aim to examine how black female athletes are covered and propose guidelines for how the media can improve how they frame pregnant female athletes. My findings indicated that the media commonly framed the athletes’ pregnancy as a career roadblock which further can lead to a type of comeback story. The media also commonly frames these athletes as trailblazers, as a competitive athlete who will overcome their pregnancy as an obstacle, as a superwoman and by using a reality frame, which included stories about the pregnancy experience. Furthermore, this research contributes to the future of how the media should frame pregnant female athletes. There is still a fight for sex equality in sports and the media should continue to fight for pregnant female athletes and their representation in the media
