    Measurement results and improvements on an open EPR system

    Electron spin resonance (ESR) is a spectroscopic method that allows to measure stable radicals induced by ionizing radiation. The EPR measurements can help to estimate the dose absorbed by people exposed during a nuclear disaster, detecting the number of radicals induced in their mobile phones due to the exposition [1]. Using conventional closed microwave cavities, the phone display must be fragmented in order to be introduced inside the resonator, becoming no more usable. The aim of this work is to develop a system, compatible with the spectrometer Bruker Elexys E500, able to preserve the sample integrity. The system uses an X-band resonant metallic cavity with a slit, realized on one side, for the leak of the excitation magnetic field and a Helmotz coil pair. The resonator allows measuring a sample lodged outside the cavity, while the coils produce a 100 kHz modulated field that encodes the output signal at a particular frequency and increases the SNR

    Pediatric epilepsies misdiagnosed as gastrointestinal disorders

    In the last years, several cases of pediatric epilepsies misdiagnosed and treated as gastrointestinal (GI) disorders have been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate both frequency and characteristics of these erroneous diagnoses. We identified children who had received a previous misdiagnosis of GI disorder out of 858 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy at our hospital from 2010 to 2015. Misdiagnosis was observed in 21 patients (2.4%): 7 children with West syndrome, 10 with temporal lobe epilepsy, and 4 with Panayiotopoulos syndrome. The majority of children with a misdiagnosis (12/21) were younger than 1 year at epilepsy onset, and median diagnostic delay was 15.5 months. The most frequently diagnosed GI disorder was gastroesophageal reflux disease, especially in younger children. The study confirms that epilepsy in a significant percentage of children is wrongly identified and treated as GI disorders. In particular, epilepsy should be considered in the differential diagnosis of \u201catypical\u201d gastroesophageal reflux in younger children in order to avoid serious prognostic consequences

    Design and realization of an open EPR resonator at x-band frequencies

    An open resonator compatible with X-band commercial spectrometers for electron paramagnetic resonance was designed and built. In the design process, resonators with different shapes and dimensions were compared by using ad hoc defined cavity figures of merit. Three cylindrical cavities operating on TEX11 modes with X = 1 , 2, 3, were designed taking into account a coupling iris and a slit for microwave magnetic field leakage. The cavities were further improved toward the homogeneity of the 100 kHz modulation magnetic field. A cavity was then built, operating on TE111 mode; the measured electromagnetic parameters were in a good agreement with simulations. Finally, the cavity was inserted in a commercial X-band spectrometer, and measurements have been performed on three paramagnetic samples: 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, and irradiated alanine and bone

    Vaccine Production Process: How Much Does the General Population Know about This Topic? A Web-Based Survey

    Background: Vaccine hesitancy has been recognized as a major global health threat by the World Health Organization. Many studies have investigated vaccine safety as a determinant for vaccine hesitancy; however, not much attention has been paid to vaccine production and quality control during the vaccine production process or whether knowledge about this topic may influence vaccine confidence. The aim of this study was to characterize the common knowledge about the vaccine production process. Methods: A freely accessible online questionnaire was developed on Google Modules and disseminated through social networks. A descriptive analysis of the collected answers was performed, and the chi-square test was used to assess significant differences for the sociodemographic characteristics of the study population (age, gender, work or education and training in the healthcare setting, minor offspring). A binary logistic regression model was performed considering these socio-demographic categories as independent variables. Results: The number of collected questionnaire was 135. Most of the participants (127/135, 94.1%) were aware that quality control measures are carried out during manufacturing, although some knowledge gaps emerged in specific aspects of the vaccine production process, without statistically significant differences between age groups. Working in the healthcare setting or being educated in healthcare may be considered predictors for a better understanding that more than 50% of the production time is spent on quality control (AOR = 3.43; 95% CI: 1.84–8.14, p = 0.01) and that considering quality control performed during the vaccine production process is adequate for avoiding contamination (AOR = 7.90; 95% CI: 0.97–64.34; p = 0.05). Conclusions: This study allowed for a characterization of common knowledge about the vaccine production process. It highlighted the need to implement specific strategies to spread correct information about the vaccine production process. This study may contribute to increased confidence and trust in vaccines and vaccination among the general population

    The Experience of VaccinarSinToscana Website and the Role of New Media in Promoting Vaccination

    The Department of Health Sciences (University of Florence) developed a regional website “VaccinarSinToscana” in order to provide information on vaccines and communicate with the general population, as well as the healthcare community, at a regional and local level. The aim of this paper is to present the VaccinarSinToscana website framework and analyze the three-year activity of the website and the related social network account on Facebook in terms of dissemination and visibility. In the first three years since its launch, the VaccinarSinToscana portal has increased its visibility: the number of single users, visits and single web pages has grown exponentially. Our results also demonstrate how the Facebook account launch contributed enormously to the increase in the visibility of the website. The objective for the future of the VaccinarSinToscana portal is to grow further, in order to reach out to an even wider audience
