    Precursor-derived in-water peracetic acid impacts on broiler performance, gut microbiota and antimicrobial resistance genes

    Past antimicrobial misuse has led to the spread of antimicrobial resistance amongst pathogens, reportedly a major public health threat. Attempts to reduce the spread of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria are in place worldwide, among which finding alternatives to antimicrobials have a pivotal role. Such molecules could be used as “green alternatives” to reduce the bacterial load either by targeting specific bacterial groups or more generically, functioning as biocides when delivered in vivo. In this study, the effect of in-water peracetic acid as a broad-spectrum antibiotic alternative for broilers was assessed via hydrolysis of precursors sodium percarbonate and tetraacetylethylenediamine. Six equidistant peracetic acid levels were tested from 0 to 50 ppm using four pens per treatment and 4 birds per pen (i.e., 16 birds per treatment and 96 in total). Peracetic acid was administered daily from d 7 to 14 of age whilst measuring performance parameters and end-point bacterial concentration (qPCR) in crop, jejunum, and ceca, as well as crop 16S sequencing. PAA treatment, especially at 20, 30, and 40 ppm, increased body weight at d 14, and feed intake during PAA exposure compared to control (P < 0.05). PAA decreased bacterial concentration in the crop only (P < 0.05), which was correlated to better performance (P < 0.05). Although no differences in alpha- and beta-diversity were found, it was observed a reduction of Lactobacillus (P < 0.05) and Flectobacillus (P < 0.05) in most treatments compared to control, together with an increased abundance of predicted 4-aminobutanoate degradation (V) pathway. The analysis of the AMR genes did not point towards any systematic differences in gene abundance due to treatment administration. This, together with the rest of our observations could indicate that proximal gut microbiota modulation could result in performance amelioration. Thus, peracetic acid may be a valid antimicrobial alternative that could also positively affect performance

    Chemical Vapour Deposition of Gas Sensitive Metal Oxides

    This article presents a review of recent research efforts and developments for the fabrication of metal-oxide gas sensors using chemical vapour deposition (CVD), presenting its potential advantages as a materials synthesis technique for gas sensors along with a discussion of their sensing performance. Thin films typically have poorer gas sensing performance compared to traditional screen printed equivalents, attributed to reduced porosity, but the ability to integrate materials directly with the sensor platform provides important process benefits compared to competing synthetic techniques. We conclude that these advantages are likely to drive increased interest in the use of CVD for gas sensor materials over the next decade, whilst the ability to manipulate deposition conditions to alter microstructure can help mitigate the potentially reduced performance in thin films, hence the current prospects for use of CVD in this field look excellent

    Unifocality as Prognostic Factor for Unilateral Retinoblastoma: Preliminary Results of 32 Eyes Treated with Intra-Arterial Chemotherapy Alone

    Purpose: To evaluate the role of intra-arterial chemotherapy (IAC) in the management of unilateral, unifocal retinoblastoma (RB) as a single therapy, associated to neither focal nor systemic adjunctive therapies. Methods: Prospective, single center, interventional case series of 32 consecutive eyes diagnosed with unilateral unifocal RB and treated exclusively with selective ophthalmic intra-arterial chemotherapy, with no adjunctive systemic or focal treatments. Results: Full regression of the lesion was observed in 30 eyes (93.75%). 2 eyes were enucleated. Ophthalmoscopic remissions type I and III with higher calcific component were achieved. Additionally, neither recurrences nor new tumors appeared during the patient follow-up, which ranged from 10 months to 13 years. Conclusion: Selective intra-arterial chemotherapy has demonstrated to be highly effective in terms of disease control and anatomical preservation in case of unilateral unifocal disease, without requiring any additional systemic and/or focal therapy

    The accuracy of burn depth diagnosis: Clinical assessment before and after enzymatic debridement

    Abstract Introduction The most common technique used to determine burn depth is clinical assessment by experienced burn surgeons, although this has been shown to be reliable in only 60–75% of the cases. Overestimation of burn depth may result in needles surgery, while burn depth underestimation can led to an increased length of stay in the hospital, risk of contracture and hypertrophic scar formation. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical evaluation of burn depth before and after enzymatic debridement with Nexobrid®. Methods The study model was retrospective. 69 patient records were collected at our burn units, from Jan 2018 to Jan 2019. Each target wound was directly assessed by a single expert physician before and after enzymatic debridement. It was investigated whether the expert, by single wound, would have indicated the need for skin grafts before treatment with Nexobrid® and after treatment. Results Prior to treatment with Nexobrid®, the expert physician assessed that a graft was necessary for 47/69 patients (68.1%). Following debridement, the same expert deemed that the patients needing a graft were 19/69 (27.5%); analysing K-agreement, a 40.6% discrepancy between the pre and post-treatment opinion with Nexobrid® was observed. Discussion The use of Nexobrid® enzymatic debridement can positively affect burn depth clinical assessment, increasing its specificity and sensitivity, without any need for delay. This can lead to a significant change in clinical practice, minimizing the use of surgery, therefore increasing quality and precision of the reconstructive phase

    Rare case of an adrenocortical neoplasm: A case report and review of literature

    Adrenocortical neoplasms (ACNs) are rare and poorly characterized in infants. The true incidence of ACNs is not well known and it appears to vary substantially across different geographical areas. ACNs are more common in females and two peaks of incidence have been identified: The first year of life and between the age of nine and 16 years. Due to the heterogeneity and rarity of ACNs, their pathological and prognostic classification is challenging. The current study describes the case of a seven‑year‑old male, who presented to the Department of Pediatric Surgery, University of Siena (Siena, Italy) with a feminization syndrome and increased somatic growth that was associated with a unilateral adrenal mass, which was diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging. Surgical excision of the mass was performed and histological analysis determined that it was an ACN, with a low risk of malignity; however, the pathological classification of the tumor was challenging. At present, the future behavior of ACNs is unpredictable. Therefore, increasing the knowledge surrounding this type of tumor may aid in its diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Due to the rarity of pediatric ACNs, no single pediatric oncology center has acquired extensive experience treating this type of tumor. Thus, the initiation of an international tumor registry may aid with the management of patients presenting with ACN

    Impelling Factors for Contracting COVID-19 Among Surgical Professionals During the Pandemic: A Multinational Cohort Study.

    BACKGROUND Medical workers, including surgical professionals working in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treating hospitals, were under enormous stress during the pandemic. This global study investigated factors endowing COVID-19 amongst surgical professionals and students. METHODS This global cross-sectional survey was made live on February 18, 2021 and closed for analysis on March 13, 2021. It was freely shared on social and scientific media platforms and was sent via email groups and circulated through a personal network of authors. Chi-square test for independence, and binary logistic regression analysis were carried out on determining predictors of surgical professionals contracting COVID-19. RESULTS This survey captured the response of 520 surgical professionals from 66 countries. Of the professionals, 92.5% (481/520) reported practising in hospitals managing COVID-19 patients. More than one-fourth (25.6%) of the respondents (133/520) reported suffering from COVID-19 which was more frequent in surgical professionals practising in public sector healthcare institutions (P = 0.001). Thirty-seven percent of those who reported never contracting COVID-19 (139/376) reported being still asked to practice self-isolation and wear a shield without the diagnosis (P = 0.001). Of those who did not contract COVID-19, 75.7% (283/376) were vaccinated (P < 0.001). Surgical professionals undergoing practice in the private sector (odds ratio (OR): 0.33; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.14 - 0.77; P = 0.011) and receiving two doses of vaccine (OR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.32 - 0.95; P = 0.031) were identified to enjoy decreased odds of contracting COVID-19. Only 6.9% of those who reported not contracting COVID-19 (26/376) were calculated to have the highest "overall composite level of harm" score (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS High prevalence of respondents got COVID-19, which was more frequent in participants working in public sector hospitals. Those who reported contracting COVID-19 were calculated to have the highest level of harm score. Self-isolation or shield, getting two doses of vaccines decreases the odds of contracting COVID-19

    Interaction of Skeletal and Left Ventricular Mass in Older Adults with Low Muscle Performance

    BACKGROUND: It was recently hypothesized the existence of “cardiac-skeletal muscle axis.” However, the relationship between skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and left ventricular mass (LVM) has never been investigated in the specific group of older individuals with low skeletal mass and physical performance. We tested this hypothesis in the SPRINT-T (Sarcopenia and Physical Frailty IN older people: multicomponenT Treatment strategies Trial) population using LVM as independent variable and SMM as dependent variable. METHODS: SMM was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan and expressed as appendicular lean mass (ALM), and LVM was estimated through echocardiography. Low ALM was defined according to Foundation for the National Institutes of Health Sarcopenia Project criteria, and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) was used to assess physical performance.RESULTS: The population consisted of 100 persons (33 men and 67 women), aged 70 years or older (mean age = 79 5 years) with low ALM and SPPB ranged between 3 and 9, suggestive of physical frailty. Charlson Comorbidity Index median score was 0. Mean value of LVM was 193 67 g, indexed LVM/body surface area (LVM/BSA) was 112 33 g/m2, and cardiac output (CO) was 65 19 L/min. ALM was strongly and positively correlated with LVM (r = 0.54602; P &lt; .0001), LVM/BSA (r = 0.30761; P &lt; .002), CO (r = 0.49621; P &lt; .0001), body mass index (BMI) (r = 0.52461; P &lt; .0001), sex (r = 0.77; P &lt; .001), fat mass (r = 0.38977; P &lt; .0001), and hemoglobin (Hb) (r = 0.26001; P &lt; .01). In the multivariate analysis, LVM (β = .019 .005; P &lt; .0001), CO (β = .038 .016; P = .019), BMI (β = .286 .051; P &lt; .0001), and Hb (β = .544 .175; P = .0025) remained associated to ALM. CONCLUSIONS: In a sample of older persons with low muscle mass and physical performance, LVM was positively and significantly correlated with ALM, independently from blood pressure, physical activity, and other potential confounders. Future studies are needed to address the effect of interventions targeting LVM and SMM

Appropriate management of early nutritional needs is particularly crucial for preterm infants. Although the impact of early nutrition on health outcomes in preterm infants is well established, evidence-based recommendations on complementary feeding for preterm neonates and especially extremely low birth weight and extremely low gestational age neonates are still lacking.     The main aim of this research, performed by some students in Food Science and Technology of Foggia University, is to show how perform the selection of a functional starter through a step-by-step procedure. Fifteen yeast strains were studied in order to assess their biotechnological traits, e.g. catalase, urease, B-glucosidase, pectolytic and xylanolytic activities, production of H2S, resistance to copper, SO2 and acetic acid, growth at different temperatures, alkaline pH, in presence of different amounts of ethanol and glucose, and some probiotic properties. After studying these abilities, yeasts were identified through the miniaturized system API 20 C AUX and two kinds of multivariate analyses (Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis) were performed to highlight the best strains.</p
