    Phthalate and non-phthalate plasticizers in indoor dust from childcare facilities, salons, and homes across the USA

    The quality of indoor environment has received considerable attention owing to the declining outdoor human activities and the associated public health issues. The prolonged exposure of children in childcare facilities or the occupational exposure of adults to indoor environmental triggers can be a culprit of the pathophysiology of several commonly observed idiopathic syndromes. In this study, concentrations of potentially toxic plasticizers (phthalates as well as non-phthalates) were investigated in 28 dust samples collected from three different indoor environments across the USA. The mean concentrations of non-phthalate plasticizers [acetyl tri-n-butyl citrate (ATBC), di-(2-ethylhexyl) adipate (DEHA), and diisobutyl adipate (DIBA)] were found at 0.51e880 mg/g for the first time in indoor dust samples from childcare facilities, homes, and salons across the USA. The observed concentrations of these replacement non-phthalate plasticizer were as high as di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, the most frequently detected phthalate plasticizer at highest concentration worldwide, in most of the indoor dust samples. The estimated daily intakes of total phthalates (n = 7) by children and toddlers through indoor dust in childcare facilities were 1.6 times higher than the non-phthalate plasticizers (n = 3), whereas estimated daily intake of total non-phthalates for all age groups at homes were 1.9 times higher than the phthalate plasticizers. This study reveals, for the first time, a more elevated (~3 folds) occupational intake of phthalate and non-phthalate plasticizers through the indoor dust at salons (214 and 285 ng/kg-bw/day, respectively) than at homes in the USA

    Physicochemical, antioxidant, and sensorial properties of peach snacks prepared from different cultivars

    High potentiality of medicinal benefits of peach have increased its demand, however, supply of fresh fruit to meet the demand is challenging as it grows in specific climatic regions and in particular season. Preparation of varieties of processed peach products could be a good option to supply in lean season. Objective of the study was to assess the quality characteristics of peach snacks prepared from 11 different cultivars. We investigated the physicochemical (soluble solid, titratable acidity, hardness and dry yield), antioxidant (DPPH radical scavenging capacity and total phenolics content) and sensorial properties (color, flavor, texture, sweetness and overall acceptance) of peach snacks prepared from 11 peach cultivars. Peach snacks of different cultivars evaluated in this study showed substantial variations in antioxidant capacity,  physicochemical and sensorial properties. Some of the samples showed higher physicochemical properties while the others contained better antioxidant capacity or sensory properties. Results of this study reveal that quality peach snacks having different properties could be prepared by drying thin slices of fresh fruits of different cultivars. However, supplementary studies on cost effective techniques of peach snacks preparation and variation in nutritive and medicinal properties of processed products could increase the application of the findings of this experiment.Key words: Antioxidant, peach snack, physicochemical, sensory property

    Anisotropic composite polymer for high magnetic force in microfluidic systems

    International audienceAnisotropic carbonyl iron-PolyDiMethylSiloxane (PDMS) composites were developed and implemented in microfluidic devices to serve as magnetic flux concentrators. These original materials provide technological solutions for heterogeneous integration with PDMS. Besides microfabrication advantages, they offer interesting modular magnetic properties. Applying an external magnetic field during the PDMS reticulation leads to the formation of 1D-agglomerates of magnetic particles, organized in the non-magnetic polymer matrix. This induces an increase of susceptibility as compared to composites with randomly dispersed particles. In this report, we explored the gain in reachable magnetophoretic forces in operating microfluidic devices, from the study of magnetic micro-beads motion injected in the microchannel. We show that even at relatively large distances from the magnetically-functionalized channel wall, the anisotropic composite leads to a factor two increase in the magnetophoretic force. Finally, further investigations based on finite element description suggest that the measured benefit of anisotropic composite polymers does not only rely on the global susceptibility increase but also on the local magnetic field gradients originating from the microstructure

    Targeted Informal Education Promotes Improved Well-Being, Innovation, and Climate-Change Adaptation among Residents in Bajura District, Nepal

    Western Nepal is a remote region home to a wide variety of traditional small farm and livestock production systems. Communities here lack direct access to a suitable road infrastructure and thus are isolated from the modern world. Farm families are often poverty stricken. Western Nepal is also enduring significant climate change, resulting in warmer and drier conditions that negatively affect crop and livestock productivity. Here we report findings from a novel, quasi-experimental approach where the residents of two communities were provided with an intervention package and their perceptions of change over a 16-month period were contrasted with those from residents of two paired “control” communities that lacked the interventions. The goal was to assess the impact of interventions in promoting well-being, agricultural innovation, and climate-change adaptation. Research efforts included baseline surveys conducted in December, 2013, as well as endline surveys conducted during May, 2015. During the interim period a series of informal, educational inputs and technical demonstrations was implemented based on needs assessments from Participatory Rural Appraisals and expert input. Results indicated that the educational interventions had a very positive impact on nearly all of the 24 attributes that were assessed.     The low surface energy of HDPE limits its industrial uses as it is not suitable for printing and adhesion. The main aim of this work is to improve the wetting properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) using air dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) operating at the line frequency (50 Hz). The estimation of electron temperature and electron density has been done by electrical and optical methods. The surface roughness of the control and plasma treated polymer film is analysed by contact angle (CA) measurement, surface energy measurement and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The contact angle was found to be suppressed from 93.180±2.00 to 63.750±0.880 after 10s of plasma treatment which implied that the surface property had changed to a hydrophilic state caused by an increase in the surface roughness

    International audienceFeature models are a widespread means to represent commonality and variability in software product lines. As is the case for other kinds of models, computing and managing feature model differences is useful in various real-world situations. In this paper, we propose a set of novel differencing techniques that combine syntactic and semantic mechanisms, and automatically produce meaningful differences. Practitioners can exploit our results in various ways: to understand, manipulate, visualize and reason about differences. They can also combine them with existing feature model composition and decomposition operators. The proposed automations rely on satisfiability algorithms. They come with a dedicated language and a comprehensive environment. We illustrate and evaluate the practical usage of our techniques through a case study dealing with a configurable component framework

    A class of ionic liquid supported (ILS) (S)-pyrrolidine sulfonamide organocatalyst (1c), which was developed earlier in our lab, has been applied to a wider range of Michael addition reaction, involving various aryl-substituted nitroolefins and a series of aldehydes. Catalyst 1c catalyzes Michael additions in which only 2 equivalents of aldehydes to each equivalent of nitroolefin are required. With 10 mol% of ILS catalyst 1c loading, moderate to excellent yields (51- 98%) with moderate enantioselectivities (28-83% ee) and high diastereoselectivities (syn/anti ratio up to 97/3) were obtained. Moreover, the catalyst 1c could be easily recycled and reused for at least 5 times with slightly reduced activities

    Analysis of maternal and newborn training curricula and approaches to inform future trainings for routine care, basic and comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care in the low- and middle-income countries: Lessons from Ethiopia and Nepal

    Program managers routinely design and implement specialised maternal and newborn health trainings for health workers in low- and middle-income countries to provide better-coordinated care across the continuum of care. However, in these countries details on the availability of different training packages, skills covered in those training packages and the gaps in their implementation are patchy. This paper presents an assessment of maternal and newborn health training packages to describe differences in training contents and implementation approaches used for a range of training packages in Ethiopia and Nepal. We conducted a mixed-methods study. The quantitative assessment was conducted using a comprehensive assessment questionnaire based on validated WHO guidelines and developed jointly with global maternal and newborn health experts. The qualitative assessment was conducted through key informant interviews with national stakeholders involved in implementing these training packages and working with the Ministries of Health in both countries. Our quantitative analysis revealed several key gaps in the technical content of maternal and newborn health training packages in both countries. Our qualitative results from key informant interviews provided additional insights by highlighting several issues with trainings related to quality, skill retention, logistics, and management. Taken together, our findings suggest four key areas of improvement: first, training materials should be updated based on the content gaps identified and should be aligned with each other. Second, trainings should address actual health worker performance gaps using a variety of innovative approaches such as blended and self-directed learning. Third, post-training supervision and ongoing mentoring need to be strengthened. Lastly, functional training information systems are required to support planning efforts in both countries

    SN~2012cg: Evidence for Interaction Between a Normal Type Ia Supernova and a Non-Degenerate Binary Companion

    We report evidence for excess blue light from the Type Ia supernova SN 2012cg at fifteen and sixteen days before maximum B-band brightness. The emission is consistent with predictions for the impact of the supernova on a non-degenerate binary companion. This is the first evidence for emission from a companion to a SN Ia. Sixteen days before maximum light, the B-V color of SN 2012cg is 0.2 mag bluer than for other normal SN~Ia. At later times, this supernova has a typical SN Ia light curve, with extinction-corrected M_B = -19.62 +/- 0.02 mag and Delta m_{15}(B) = 0.86 +/- 0.02. Our data set is extensive, with photometry in 7 filters from 5 independent sources. Early spectra also show the effects of blue light, and high-velocity features are observed at early times. Near maximum, the spectra are normal with a silicon velocity v_{Si} = -10,500$ km s^{-1}. Comparing the early data with models by Kasen (2010) favors a main-sequence companion of about 6 solar masses. It is possible that many other SN Ia have main-sequence companions that have eluded detection because the emission from the impact is fleeting and faint.Comment: accepted to Ap
