    The dynamics of coset dimensional reduction

    The evolution of multiple scalar fields in cosmology has been much studied, particularly when the potential is formed from a series of exponentials. For a certain subclass of such systems it is possible to get `assisted` behaviour, where the presence of multiple terms in the potential effectively makes it shallower than the individual terms indicate. It is also known that when compactifying on coset spaces one can achieve a consistent truncation to an effective theory which contains many exponential terms, however, if there are too many exponentials then exact scaling solutions do not exist. In this paper we study the potentials arising from such compactifications of eleven dimensional supergravity and analyse the regions of parameter space which could lead to scaling behaviour.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures; added citation

    A universal constraint between charge and rotation rate for degenerate black holes surrounded by matter

    We consider stationary, axially and equatorially symmetric systems consisting of a central rotating and charged degenerate black hole and surrounding matter. We show that a2+Q2=M2a^2+Q^2=M^2 always holds provided that a continuous sequence of spacetimes can be identified, leading from the Kerr-Newman solution in electrovacuum to the solution in question.     Phonons from neutron powder diffraction

    The spherically averaged structure function \soq obtained from pulsed neutron powder diffraction contains both elastic and inelastic scattering via an integral over energy. The Fourier transformation of \soq to real space, as is done in the pair density function (PDF) analysis, regularizes the data, i.e. it accentuates the diffuse scattering. We present a technique which enables the extraction of off-center phonon information from powder diffraction experiments by comparing the experimental PDF with theoretical calculations based on standard interatomic potentials and the crystal symmetry. This procedure (dynamics from powder diffraction(DPD)) has been successfully implemented for two systems, a simple metal, fcc Ni, and an ionic crystal, CaF2_{2}. Although computationally intensive, this data analysis allows for a phonon based modeling of the PDF, and additionally provides off-center phonon information from powder neutron diffraction

    ICF-based Functional Components and Contextual Factors as Correlates of Perceived Quality of Life for Youth With Chronic Conditions

    Purpose: To explore International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)-based functional components and contextual factors associated with perceived quality of life (QOL) for youth with chronic conditions from the perspective of youth and parents. Method: Baseline data were obtained from a longitudinal study examining predictors of changes in perceived QOL for youth with chronic conditions. 439 youth aged 11–17 (and one of their parents) completed a questionnaire. Standardized tools were used to measure youth functioning, contextual factors and perceived QOL. Multivariate linear regression analyses, controlling for socio-demographic and health information, were conducted to explore correlations among youth functioning/contextual factors and youth and parent perceptions of youth QOL. Results: Significant (p0.05) negative correlates with both youth and parent perceptions of youth QOL included pain/other physical symptoms and emotional symptoms. Significant factors positively correlated with youth and parent perceptions of youth QOL included school productivity and spirituality. Other significant positive correlates of youth perspectives were family social support and school belongingness/safety. Family functioning was positively correlated, and youth social anxiety and environmental barriers were negatively correlated, with parent perceptions of youth QOL. Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence of factors upon which services aimed at improving perceived QOL of youth with chronic conditions could be based

    The gauge theory of dislocations: static solutions of screw and edge dislocations

    We investigate the T(3)-gauge theory of static dislocations in continuous solids. We use the most general linear constitutive relations bilinear in the elastic distortion tensor and dislocation density tensor for the force and pseudomoment stresses of an isotropic solid. The constitutive relations contain six material parameters. In this theory both the force and pseudomoment stresses are asymmetric. The theory possesses four characteristic lengths l1, l2, l3 and l4 which are given explicitely. We first derive the three-dimensional Green tensor of the master equation for the force stresses in the translational gauge theory of dislocations. We then investigate the situation of generalized plane strain (anti-plane strain and plane strain). Using the stress function method, we find modified stress functions for screw and edge dislocations. The solution of the screw dislocation is given in terms of one independent length l1=l4. For the problem of an edge dislocation, only two characteristic lengths l2 and l3 arise with one of them being the same l2=l1 as for the screw dislocation. Thus, this theory possesses only two independent lengths for generalized plane strain. If the two lengths l2 and l3 of an edge dislocation are equal, we obtain an edge dislocation which is the gauge theoretical version of a modified Volterra edge dislocation.     Plasma p-tau181/Aβ1-42 ratio predicts Aβ-PET status and correlates with CSF-p-tau181/Aβ1-42 and future cognitive decline

    Background: In Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD), plasma amyloid beta (Aβ)1-42 and phosphorylated tau (p-tau) predict high amyloid status from Aβ positron emission tomography (PET); however, the extent to which combination of these plasma assays can predict remains unknown. Methods: Prototype Simoa assays were used to measure plasma samples from participants who were either cognitively normal (CN) or had mild cognitive impairment (MCI)/AD in the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle (AIBL) study. Results: The p-tau181/Aβ1-42 ratio showed the best prediction of Aβ-PET across all participants (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.905, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.86–0.95) and in CN (AUC = 0.873; 0.80–0.94), and symptomatic (AUC = 0.908; 0.82–1.00) adults. Plasma p-tau181/Aβ1-42 ratio correlated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) p-tau181 (Elecsys, Spearman\u27s ρ = 0.74, P \u3c 0.0001) and predicted abnormal CSF Aβ (AUC = 0.816; 0.74–0.89). The p-tau181/Aβ1-42 ratio also predicted future rates of cognitive decline assessed by AIBL Preclinical Alzheimer Cognitive Composite or Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Boxes (P \u3c 0.0001). Discussion: Plasma p-tau181/Aβ1-42 ratio predicted both Aβ-PET status and cognitive decline, demonstrating potential as both a diagnostic aid and as a screening and prognostic assay for preclinical AD trials
