    An Exploration of the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on the Social Inclusion of Deaf Young People Eleanor Dewar

    The social inclusion of deaf children and young people (CYP) can be promoted or inhibited by a number of factors, including successful interactions with peers and teachers and deaf awareness within schools. The Covid-19 pandemic presented new challenges for the social inclusion of deaf CYP during this time due to the introduction of restrictions such as face masks and new ways of working, including online learning. There is, as yet, little research giving voice to the experiences of deaf children and young people during this time. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of four deaf young people, aged between 11-15, attending mainstem schools during the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. The data was collected using in person semi-structured interviews. These interviews focused on the young people’s experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic and sought to explore the factors which acted as barriers and facilitators of their social inclusion during this time. The data was analysed using an Interpretative Phenomenological (IPA) approach. All four of the young people shared their experiences of facilitators and barriers for social inclusion during the Covid-19 pandemic. Four superordinate themes emerged from the data, which encompassed these facilitators and barriers: value of support, challenges, connectedness to peers, and self-reflections. Implications for educational professionals were explored using Allen et al’s. (2016) Socio-Ecological Framework of School Belonging, identifying that experiences of social inclusion for deaf CYP can be shaped by multiple levels of the system around the young person. A need for further deaf awareness within schools was outlined in order to continue create positive experiences of social inclusion for deaf CYP

    Strong "quantum" chaos in the global ballooning mode spectrum of three-dimensional plasmas

    The spectrum of ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) pressure-driven (ballooning) modes in strongly nonaxisymmetric toroidal systems is difficult to analyze numerically owing to the singular nature of ideal MHD caused by lack of an inherent scale length. In this paper, ideal MHD is regularized by using a kk-space cutoff, making the ray tracing for the WKB ballooning formalism a chaotic Hamiltonian billiard problem. The minimum width of the toroidal Fourier spectrum needed for resolving toroidally localized ballooning modes with a global eigenvalue code is estimated from the Weyl formula.     Reshaping and Capturing Leidenfrost drops with a magnet

    Liquid oxygen, which is paramagnetic, also undergoes Leidenfrost effect at room temperature. In this article, we first study the deformation of oxygen drops in a magnetic field and show that it can be described via an effective capillary length, which includes the magnetic force. In a second part, we describe how these ultra-mobile drops passing above a magnet significantly slow down and can even be trapped.     Boosting Long-term Memory via Wakeful Rest: Intentional Rehearsal is not Necessary, Automatic Consolidation is Sufficient.

    <div><p>People perform better on tests of delayed free recall if learning is followed immediately by a short wakeful rest than by a short period of sensory stimulation. Animal and human work suggests that wakeful resting provides optimal conditions for the consolidation of recently acquired memories. However, an alternative account cannot be ruled out, namely that wakeful resting provides optimal conditions for intentional rehearsal of recently acquired memories, thus driving superior memory. Here we utilised non-recallable words to examine whether wakeful rest boosts long-term memory, even when new memories could not be rehearsed intentionally during the wakeful rest delay. The probing of non-recallable words requires a recognition paradigm. Therefore, we first established, via Experiment 1, that the rest-induced boost in memory observed via free recall can be replicated in a recognition paradigm, using concrete nouns. In Experiment 2, participants heard 30 non-recallable non-words, presented as ‘foreign names in a bridge club abroad’ and then either rested wakefully or played a visual spot-the-difference game for 10 minutes. Retention was probed via recognition at two time points, 15 minutes and 7 days after presentation. As in Experiment 1, wakeful rest boosted recognition significantly, and this boost was maintained for at least 7 days. Our results indicate that the enhancement of memory via wakeful rest is <i>not</i> dependent upon intentional rehearsal of learned material during the rest period. We thus conclude that consolidation is <i>sufficient</i> for this rest-induced memory boost to emerge. We propose that wakeful resting allows for superior memory consolidation, resulting in stronger and/or more veridical representations of experienced events which can be detected via tests of free recall and recognition.</p></div

    A possibility to measure elastic photon--photon scattering in vacuum

    Photon--photon scattering in vacuum due to the interaction with virtual electron-positron pairs is a consequence of quantum electrodynamics. A way for detecting this phenomenon has been devised based on interacting modes generated in microwave waveguides or cavities [G. Brodin, M. Marklund and L. Stenflo, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{87} 171801 (2001)]. Here we materialize these ideas, suggest a concrete cavity geometry, make quantitative estimates and propose experimental details. It is found that detection of photon-photon scattering can be within the reach of present day technology.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Electronic Correlations in Oligo-acene and -thiophene Organic Molecular Crystals

    From first principles calculations we determine the Coulomb interaction between two holes on oligo-acene and -thiophene molecules in a crystal, as a function of the oligomer length. The relaxation of the molecular geometry in the presence of holes is found to be small. In contrast, the electronic polarization of the molecules that surround the charged oligomer, reduces the bare Coulomb repulsion between the holes by approximately a factor of two. In all cases the effective hole-hole repulsion is much larger than the calculated valence bandwidth, which implies that at high doping levels the properties of these organic semiconductors are determined by electron-electron correlations.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Evidence of overfishing in small-scale fisheries in Madagascar

Despite many fisher people observing declining catches, a lack of data remains a barrier to understanding the status of small-scale fisheries and their effective management in many places. Where data exist, complex analyses and stock assessments are often beyond the capacity and budgets of local managers. Working with small-scale fisheries in western Madagascar, we analyze landings data to provide a description of the fishery and evaluate the top twenty most commonly caught species for evidence of overfishing. Using length composition data, we use Froese’s three simple rules: Let them spawn, let them grow and let the mega-spawners live, as well as Cope and Punt’s decision tree to infer if spawning biomass is less than target reference points. We then use length-based parameters to calculate fishing mortality and compare with published estimates of natural mortality to assess overfishing (F > M). Over 17,000 fishing trips were registered over a 2-year period (2010–2012), landing just short of 2 million individual fish. Length data were recorded for a sample of over 120,000 individuals. Fish comprised 95% of landings, with the remainder comprised of other groups including crustaceans (mostly shrimp, crab, and lobster), cephalopods, and holothurians. We provide some of the first evidence that fish species caught in the small-scale fisheries of the Menabe region of Madagascar are experiencing overfishing. The most notable result is that for 13 of the 20 most common species, fishing mortality exceeds natural mortality. Many species had a large proportion of individuals (in some cases 100%) being caught before they reached maturity. Very few species were fished at their optimal size, and there were low numbers of large individuals (mega-spawners) in catches. Overfishing in western Madagascar presents a serious threat to the income, food security and well-being of some of the most vulnerable people in the world. The results of this paper support the call for improved management. However, management approaches should take account of overlapping fisheries and be inclusive to ensure the impacts of management do not undermine the rights of small-scale fishers.
