    Accelerator measurement of the energy spectra of neutrons emitted in the interaction of 3-GeV protons with several elements

    The application of time of flight techniques for determining the shapes of the energy spectra of neutrons between 20 and 400 MeV is discussed. The neutrons are emitted at 20, 34, and 90 degrees in the bombardment of targets by 3 GeV protons. The targets used are carbon, aluminum, cobalt, and platinum with cylindrical cross section. Targets being bombarded are located in the internal circulating beam of a particle accelerator

    Blood lactate clearance after maximal exercise depends on active recovery intensity

    AIM: High-intensity exercise is time-limited by onset of fatigue, marked by accumulation of blood lactate. This is accentuated at maximal, all-out exercise that rapidly accumulates high blood lactate. The optimal active recovery intensity for clearing lactate after such maximal, all-out exercise remains unknown. Thus, we studied the intensity-dependence of lactate clearance during active recovery after maximal exercise.<p></p> METHODS: We constructed a standardized maximal, all-out treadmill exercise protocol that predictably lead to voluntary exhaustion and blood lactate concentration >10 mM. Next, subjects ran series of all-out bouts that increased blood lactate concentration to 11.5±0.2 mM, followed by recovery exercises ranging 0% (passive)-100% of the lactate threshold.<p></p> RESULTS: Repeated measurements showed faster lactate clearance during active versus passive recovery (P<0.01), and that active recovery at 60-100% of lactate threshold was more efficient for lactate clearance than lower intensity recovery (P<0.05). Active recovery at 80% of lactate threshold had the highest rate of and shortest time constant for lactate clearance (P<0.05), whereas the response during the other intensities was graded (100%=60%>40%>passive recovery, P<0.05).<p></p> CONCLUSION: Active recovery after maximal all-out exercise clears accumulated blood lactate faster than passive recovery in an intensity-dependent manner, with maximum clearance occurring at active recovery of 80% of lactate threshold

    Mapping the CMB II: the second flight of the QMAP experiment

    We report the results from the second flight of QMAP, an experiment to map the cosmic microwave background near the North Celestial Pole. We present maps of the sky at 31 and 42 GHz as well as a measurement of the angular power spectrum covering the l-range 40-200. Anisotropy is detected at about 20 sigma and is in agreement with previous results at these angular scales. We also report details of the data reduction and analysis techniques which were used for both flights of QMAP.Comment: 4 pages, with 5 figures included. Submitted to ApJL.     Suppression of properties associated with malignancy in murine melanoma-melanocyte hybrid cells.

    Murine and human melanoma cells differ relatively reliably from non-tumorigenic melanocytes in certain biological properties. When cultured at low pH, melanocytes tend to be pigmented and melanoma cells unpigmented. The growth of virtually all metastatic melanoma cells is inhibited by phorbol esters such as TPA (12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate), which stimulate melanocyte growth. Melanocytes fail to grow in suspension culture or produce tumours when implanted in animals, while many melanoma lines can do both. Here we studied which of these properties were dominant in hybrid cells formed by fusion of drug-resistant murine B16-F10RR melanoma cells to melanocytes of the albino and brown lines, melan-c and melan-b. The albino melanocytes are unpigmented but well-differentiated, the brown melanocytes produce pale brown pigment and the melanoma cells are unpigmented under the conditions used. All hybrid colonies observed produced black pigment, except some melan-b/melanoma hybrids when growing sparsely with TPA. Thus pigmentation was generally dominant. 14/15 hybrid lines showed stimulation of proliferation by TPA, as do melanocytes. Most hybrid lines showed no or reduced capacity for growth in suspension, though some grew better in suspension when TPA was present. There was marked suppression of the tumorigenicity of the parental melanoma cells in 4/8 hybrids examined, and tumorigenicity was reduced in the others, despite considerable chromosome loss by the passage level tested. Thus most properties of the non-tumorigenic pigment cells were dominant, as often observed for other cell lineages, and providing further evidence for gene loss in the genesis of malignant melanoma

    A Measurement of the Angular Power Spectrum of the CMB from l = 100 to 400

    We report on a measurement of the angular spectrum of the CMB between l100l\approx 100 and l400l\approx 400 made at 144 GHz from Cerro Toco in the Chilean altiplano. When the new data are combined with previous data at 30 and 40 GHz, taken with the same instrument observing the same section of sky, we find: 1) a rise in the angular spectrum to a maximum with δTl85 μ\delta T_l \approx 85~\muK at l200l\approx 200 and a fall at l>300l>300, thereby localizing the peak near l200l\approx 200; and 2) that the anisotropy at l200l\approx 200 has the spectrum of the CMB.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     Implications of a High Angular Resolution Image of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect in RXJ1347-1145

    The most X-ray luminous cluster known, RXJ1347-1145 (z=0.45), has been the object of extensive study across the electromagnetic spectrum. We have imaged the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (SZE) at 90 GHz (3.3 mm) in RXJ1347-1145 at 10" resolution with the 64-pixel MUSTANG bolometer array on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), confirming a previously reported strong, localized enhancement of the SZE 20" to the South-East of the center of X-ray emission. This enhancement of the SZE has been interpreted as shock-heated (> 20 keV) gas caused by an ongoing major (low mass-ratio) merger event. Our data support this interpretation. We also detect a pronounced asymmetry in the projected cluster pressure profile, with the pressure just east of the cluster core ~1.6 times higher than just to the west.     90GHz and 150GHz observations of the Orion M42 region. A sub-millimeter to radio analysis

    We have used the new 90GHz MUSTANG camera on the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) to map the bright Huygens region of the star-forming region M42 with a resolution of 9" and a sensitivity of 2.8mJy/beam. 90GHz is an interesting transition frequency, as MUSTANG detects both the free-free emission characteristic of the HII region created by the Trapezium stars, normally seen at lower frequencies, and thermal dust emission from the background OMC1 molecular cloud, normally mapped at higher frequencies. We also present similar data from the 150GHz GISMO camera taken on the IRAM telescope. This map has 15" resolution. By combining the MUSTANG data with 1.4, 8, and 21GHz radio data from the VLA and GBT, we derive a new estimate of the emission measure (EM) averaged electron temperature of Te = 11376K by an original method relating free-free emission intensities at optically thin and optically thick frequencies. Combining ISO-LWS data with our data, we derive a new estimate of the dust temperature and spectral emissivity index within the 80" ISO-LWS beam toward OrionKL/BN, Td = 42K and Beta=1.3. We show that both Td and Beta decrease when going from the HII region and excited OMC1 interface to the denser UV shielded part of OMC1 (OrionKL/BN, Orion S). With a model consisting of only free-free and thermal dust emission we are able to fit data taken at frequencies from 1.5GHz to 854GHz.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journa

    Observations of M87 and Hydra A at 90 GHz

    This paper presents new observations of the AGNs M87 and Hydra A at 90 GHz made with the MUSTANG bolometer array on the Green Bank Telescope at 8.5" resolution. A spectral analysis is performed combining this new data and archival VLA data on these objects at longer wavelengths. This analysis can detect variations in spectral index and curvature expected from energy losses in the radiating particles. M87 shows only weak evidence for steepening of the spectrum along the jet suggesting either re-acceleration of the relativistic particles in the jet or insufficient losses to affect the spectrum at 90 GHz. The jets in Hydra A show strong steepening as they move from the nucleus suggesting unbalanced losses of the higher energy relativistic particles. The difference between these two sources may be accounted for by the different lengths over which the jets are observable, 2 kpc for M87 and 45 kpc for Hydra A.Comment: 11 pages, submitted to Ap
