Rethinking the Justice of God with Asian Sensibilities

    Get PDF
This article proposes the need to rethink the concepts of justice with Asian sensibilities. For centuries the idea of justice has been read and interpreted along and within the classical Greek philosophical framework. In some ways, this Greek categorial framework is also seen in the concepts of biblical justice. However, in an Asian context, the character justice and its application need to be explored in the light of restoring harmony, with the self, other, cosmos and God, which is integral in many of the Asian spiritualities. In modern times, the theories of John Rawls and Robert Nozick are much quoted in studies regarding justice. However, Asian sensibilities call for a deeper exploration of justice for the purpose of harmony and that is the intent of this article

Exploring the black box between the implementation of human resource management and its outcome from employees’ perspective: a qualitative study

    Get PDF
Until today, a rich body of human resource management (HRM) research has focused on contributing to the neoclassical economic theory, for example, employee output (performance, productivity and competitive advantage) and organisational output (e.g., financial revenue, market share, development, performance, sales and customer retention). However, limited research has focused on the relationship between human resource management, employee outcome (wellbeing, job performance and personal life) and organisation outcome (e.g., reputation, recommendation etc). In addressing this gap, the current research investigates the relationship between human resource management implementation and its outcome. The research takes an overarching approach to explore how do employees evaluate the human resource management implementation context (human resource practices and workplace relations) and its outcomes. Forty-seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with various organisations, ranks, roles, and backgrounds to gain insight into the employees’ evaluation. Furthermore, this research has adopted the qualitative approach by addressing the questions of ‘how, what, why, when, and whom’. The data were coded and analysed employing thematic, case network and matrix analyses. The findings were presented in the format of the cross-case network, matrix and thematic analyses. The findings demonstrate the valence of human resource management implementation context which is either positive, negative or neutral, does effect the work climate and culture; and employee and organisation outcomes through the process of social exchange. The research suggests the need for a holistic approach to HRM implementation. Finally, this study considers the limitation and directions for future research. Keywords: HRM, employee evaluation, HRM implementation context/factor, HR practices, workplace relations, employee and organisation outcomes; employee characteristics, values/vices, knowledge, attitude, employee wellbeing, HWB, EWB, dignity, job performance, personal life, SET, psychology contract theory, reciprocation, valence, causality

Background: Every day, we read, listen, or witness, injuries in our day to day lives. Over time, it has moved from 5th to 3rd to 1st page of our newspapers. Some days, it is not uncommon to see the entire page of our newspaper filled with news about injury and violence. On television channels, even on prime time, injury and violence has occupied the center stage. Many times, the ‘breaking news’ is only deaths due to road crashes, suicides, mass burns and blood loaded violence. The present study is aimed at analyzing the various types of injuries that occur in road traffic injuries and to take necessary actions by the concerned authority to prevent such incidents in the future. Methods: In this study, we studied the various patterns of injuries sustained by the occupants of two/four wheeler during fatal road traffic injuries. A total number of 238 cases (those who died in road traffic injuries) were included in the study for a period of 2 years from October 2010 to September 2012 in Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, Bengaluru. Results: Among the cases studied in our study (n=238), majority of the victims were males constituting 94% of the cases and in age-wise distribution of cases, age group of 21-30 years (46.2%) followed by 31-40 years (21.4%) constitutes to about 2/3rd of the cases. Time of injury among the cases studied showed that highest incidence being during the night times (18:01-00:00) which constitutes 44.11%. Among the road user category, two wheeler riders (78.15%) formed the major contributors for road traffic injury. Conclusion: In the present study, it is very clear that the middle aged, male bike riders are more prone for fatal road traffic injuries. Hence, Government should take proper initiatives in the future to focus on these high risk individuals to prevent such fatalities.

Developing Feedback Based Robotic Manufacturing Method for Earth-Based Materials

    Get PDF
Although earth-based materials have the advantage of being locally sourced and have low embodied emissions, they can have an unpredictable material behavior due to their heterogeneous composition which potentially limits their use in manufacturing. As a result, it becomes challenging to standardise and maintain quality outcomes. Moreover, current industry methods are labour-intensive and require a high level of traditional knowledge. This research explores and develops a fabrication methodology for earthen materials that is location-agnostic. It involves an array of fabrication approaches, including the development of a robotic 'Impact Printing' setup using a UR10 robot and a custom tool to pick, place, and mechanically compact earth blocks. The 'Feedback System' employs Kinect 2.0 to scan the deformation of earth materials observed during fabrication and a computational algorithm to generate accurate and adapted toolpaths for the position and compaction of earthen blocks in real-time. To push the boundaries of architectural design for traditional building materials, the study investigates the construction of a closed Nubian vault using the aforementioned techniques and tools. Through the optimization of material behavior and manufacturing processes, the research opens up a pathway for automated onsite earth construction
