    Weight management: a comparison of existing dietary approaches in a work-site setting

    <b>OBJECTIVES:</b> (1) To compare the effectiveness a 2512 kJ (600 kcal) daily energy deficit diet (ED) with a 6279 kJ (1500 kcal) generalized low-calorie diet (GLC) over a 24 week period (12 weeks weight loss plus 12 weeks weight maintenance). (2) To determine if the inclusion of lean red meat at least five times per week as part of a slimming diet is compatible with weight loss in comparison with a diet that excludes lean red meat. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. <b>SETTING:</b> Large petrochemical work-site. <b>PARTICIPANTS:</b> One-hundred and twenty-two men aged between 18 and 55 y. <b>MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:</b> Weight loss and maintenance of weight loss. <b>INTERVENTION:</b> Eligible volunteers were randomized to one of the four diet=meat combinations (ED meat, ED no meat, GLC meat, GLC no meat). One-third of subjects in each diet/meat combination were randomized to an initial control period prior to receiving dietary advice. All subjects attended for review every 2 weeks during the weight loss period. For the 12 week structured weight maintenance phase, individualized energy prescriptions were re-calculated for the ED group as 1.4 (activity factor)x basal metabolic rate. Healthy eating advice was reviewed with subjects in the GLC group. All subjects were contacted by electronic mail at 2 week intervals and anthropometric and dietary information requested. <b>RESULTS:</b> No difference was evident between diet groups in mean weight loss at 12 weeks (4.3 (s.d. 3.4) kg ED group vs 5.0 (s.d. 3.5) kg GLC group, P=0.34). Mean weight loss was closer to the intended weight loss in the 2512 kJ (600 kcal) ED group. The dropout rate was also lower than the GLC group. The inclusion of lean red meat in the diet on at least five occasions per week did not impair weight loss. Mean weight gain following 12 weeks weight maintenance was þ1.1 (s.d. 1.8) kg, P<0.0001. No differences were found between groups. <b>CONCLUSIONS:</b> This study has shown that the individualized 2512 kJ (600 kcal) ED approach was no more effective in terms of weight loss than the 6279 kJ (1500 kcal) GLC approach. However the ED approach might be considered preferable as compliance was better with this less demanding prescription. In terms of weight loss the elimination of red meat from the diet is unnecessary. The weight maintenance intervention was designed as a low-input approach, however weight regain was significant and weight maintenance strategies require further development

    Microbiology and atmospheric processes: Biological, physical and chemical characterization of aerosol particles

    The interest in bioaerosols has traditionally been linked to health hazards for humans, animals and plants. However, several components of bioaerosols exhibit physical properties of great significance for cloud processes, such as ice nucleation and cloud condensation. To gain a better understanding of their influence on climate, it is therefore important to determine the composition, concentration, seasonal fluctuation, regional diversity and evolution of bioaerosols. In this paper, we will review briefly the existing techniques for detection, quantification, physical and chemical analysis of biological particles, attempting to bridge physical, chemical and biological methods for analysis of biological particles and integrate them with aerosol sampling techniques. We will also explore some emerging spectroscopy techniques for bulk and single-particle analysis that have potential for in-situ physical and chemical analysis. Lastly, we will outline open questions and further desired capabilities (e. g., in-situ, sensitive, both broad and selective, on-line, time-resolved, rapid, versatile, cost-effective techniques) required prior to comprehensive understanding of chemical and physical characterization of bioaerosols

    L'étang de Thau est un espace lagunaire semi fermé dont les communications avec la mer sont limitées. L'exploitation de la palourde, ressource intrinsèquement peu mobile, est au coeur de l'activité de pêche dans cet étang. Il semble donc, a priori, que les notions d'espace mis en oeuvre par l'exploitation de cette ressource présentent un caractère de proximité et une dimension localisée à l'écosystème "étang de Thau". Dès lors, on pourrait penser que la connaissance écologique de ce milieu - où d'importants programmes scientifiques ont été réalisées -, alliée à la faible mobilité de cette population de bivalves fouisseurs, constituent des conditions favorables à une gestion "efficace" de cet écosystème. Ce sentiment est renforcé par le contexte social dans lequel évoluent les communautés de pêcheurs qui ont derrière elles une longue pratique de la gestion (prud'homies). Or, après une période florissante achevée en 1992, cette pêcherie traverse une crise aiguë. Les professionnels constatent en effect une forte diminution des stocks qui se traduit par (i) une régression des quantités pêchées par jours de travail (PUE) (ii) une diminution des prix (contre toute logique de marché) et (iii) une décroissance du nombre de pêcheurs. Parallèlement on observe une transformation des méthodes de pêche avec la généralisation de la pêche en plongée aux dépens de "l'arselière" technique traditionnelle qui a quasiment disparu. Dans ce contexte, et à la demande de la profesison, un programme pluridisciplinaire (programme Palourde) a été mis en oeuvre afin d'identifier les limites du système actuel puis d'élaborer un nouveau système de gestion.     A multi-ingredient nutritional supplement enhances exercise training-related reductions in markers of systemic inflammation in healthy older men

    We evaluated whether twice daily consumption of a multi-ingredient nutritional supplement (SUPP) would reduce systemic inflammatory markers following 6wk of supplementation alone (Phase 1), and the subsequent addition of 12wk exercise training (Phase 2) in healthy older men, in comparison to a carbohydrate-based control (CON). Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations were progressively reduced (P-time<0.05) SUPP group. No change in TNF-α or IL-6 concentrations was observed in the CON group

    Protective Antiviral Immunity Conferred by a Nonintegrative Lentiviral Vector-Based Vaccine

    Lentiviral vectors are under intense scrutiny as unique candidate viral vector vaccines against tumor and aggressive pathogens because of their ability to initiate potent and durable specific immune responses. Strategies that alleviate safety concerns will facilitate the clinical developments involving lentiviral vectors. In this respect, the development of integration deficient lentiviral vectors circumvents the safety concerns relative to insertional mutagenesis and might pave the way for clinical applications in which gene transfer is targeted to non-dividing cells. We thus evaluated the potential use of nonintegrative lentiviral vectors as vaccination tools since the main targeted cell in vaccination procedures is the non-dividing dendritic cell (DC). In this study, we demonstrated that a single administration of nonintegrative vectors encoding a secreted form of the envelope of a virulent strain of West Nile Virus (WNV) induces a robust B cell response. Remarkably, nonintegrative lentiviral vectors fully protected mice from a challenge with a lethal dose of WNV and a single immunization was sufficient to induce early and long-lasting protective immunity. Thus, nonintegrative lentiviral vectors might represent a safe and efficacious vaccination platform for the development of prophylactic vaccines against infectious agents

    Atomistic Simulations of Nanotube Fracture

    The fracture of carbon nanotubes is studied by atomistic simulations. The fracture behavior is found to be almost independent of the separation energy and to depend primarily on the inflection point in the interatomic potential. The rangle of fracture strians compares well with experimental results, but predicted range of fracture stresses is marketly higher than observed. Various plausible small-scale defects do not suffice to bring the failure stresses into agreement with available experimental results. As in the experiments, the fracture of carbon nanotubes is predicted to be brittle. The results show moderate dependence of fracture strength on chirality.Comment: 12 pages, PDF, submitted to Phy.
