    Collecting experiences

    The Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning through Design (CETLD) and the Art Design Media Subject Centre of the Higher Education Academy (ADM-HEA) organised a symposium to explore art and design students' learning from museums and their collections. Research conducted by CETLD at the V&A, identified limited targeted educational provision for higher education design students in museums. The same research suggested ambivalence from museum educators about the most effective ways in which to support higher education students learning from museums; this is in spite of the fact that tutors see the role of the museum as an academic facilitator, supporting student learning (Speight, 2007). Similarly, tutors were ambivalent about ways that they can support students learning from museums, although they believe that museums do provide a range of valuable learning opportunities.     Looking westwards and worshipping: The New York 'Creative Revolution' and British advertising, 1956-1980

    This article explores the ways in which developments associated with the ?creative revolution? in New York advertising in the 1950s and 1960s were imported into the United Kingdom, helping to reshape advertising practices in London. In locating the development of UK advertising within this history of commercial exchange, this article explores the modes of transmission and the material conduits through which innovations in advertising practice crossed the Atlantic. It also focuses on the role played by a distinctive 1960s formation of practitioners who used an organisation called the Design and Art Directors Association to champion the new idioms of US advertising. Their rise to influence helped to legitimate a new set of criteria for evaluating advertising which placed ?creativity? above ?research? and the ?science of selling? as the principal measure of good advertising. In exploring the exporting of the ?new advertising? to the United Kingdom, this article develops a particular understanding of how Anglo-American advertising relations worked to shape UK advertising practices. This foregrounds the way the US ?creative revolution?, like other forms of US advertising, was adapted, hybridised and indigenised in its importing to Britain. This article shows how the ?new advertising? pioneered in New York was reworked and combined with more local cultural influences.     Charged particle jet measurements with the ALICE experiment in proton-proton collisions at the LHC

    We present preliminary results of measurements of charged particle jet properties in proton-proton collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed using anti−kT,kT\rm anti-k_{T}, k_{T} and SISCone jet finding algorithms with resolution parameter R=0.4R=0.4 in the range of transverse momentum from 20 to 100 GeV/cc in the midrapidity region (\mid\eta\mid\textless 0.5). The uncorrected charged jet spectra obtained using the three different jet finders show good agreement. The data are compared to predictions from PYTHIA-Perugia0, PYTHIA-Perugia2011, and PHOJET. The mean charged particle multiplicity in leading jets increases with increasing jet pTp_{\rm T} and is consistent with model predictions. The radial distributions of transverse momentum about the jet direction and the distributions of the average radius containing 80% of the total jet pTp_{\rm T} found in the jet cone (R=0.4R = 0.4 in this analysis), indicate that high pTp_{\rm T} jets are more collimated than low pTp_{\rm T} jets.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, Conference Proceedings submitted for the 28th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics, Puerto Rico, April 7-14, 201

    Stark tuning of the charge states of a two-donor molecule in silicon

    Gate control of phosphorus donor based charge qubits in Si is investigated using a tight-binding approach. Excited molecular states of P2+ are found to impose limits on the allowed donor separations and operating gate voltages. The effects of surface (S) and barrier (B) gates are analyzed in various voltage regimes with respect to the quantum confined states of the whole device. Effects such as interface ionization, saturation of the tunnel coupling, sensitivity to donor and gate placement are also studied. It is found that realistic gate control is smooth for any donor separation, although at certain donor orientations the S and B gates may get switched in functionality. This paper outlines and analyzes the various issues that are of importance in practical control of such donor molecular systems.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure

    Modeling the initiation of others into injection drug use, using data from 2,500 injectors surveyed in Scotland during 2008-2009

    The prevalence of injection drug use has been of especial interest for assessment of the impact of blood-borne viruses. However, the incidence of injection drug use has been underresearched. Our 2-fold aim in this study was to estimate 1) how many other persons, per annum, an injection drug user (IDU) has the equivalent of full responsibility (EFR) for initiating into injection drug use and 2) the consequences for IDUs' replacement rate. EFR initiation rates are strongly associated with incarceration history, so that our analysis of IDUs' replacement rate must incorporate when, in their injecting career, IDUs were first incarcerated. To do so, we have first to estimate piecewise constant incarceration rates in conjunction with EFR initiation rates, which are then combined with rates of cessation from injecting to model IDUs' replacement rate over their injecting career, analogous to the reproduction number of an epidemic model. We apply our approach to Scotland's IDUs, using over 2,500 anonymous injector participants who were interviewed in Scotland's Needle Exchange Surveillance Initiative during 2008-2009. Our approach was made possible by the inclusion of key questions about initiations. Finally, we extend our model to include an immediate quit rate, as a reasoned compensation for higher-than-expected replacement rates, and we estimate how high initiates' quit rate should be for IDUs' replacement rate to be 1
